tow hitches

Anyone have any thoughts on which tow hitch is better, such as quality and/or price? My 2012 Wrangler Sport Unlimited didn't come with a tow package so I want to add one. Looking at Quadratec I see quite a few but don't know if one is better then the other. I really don't want to spend 150+ for the Mopar one if the others are of the same quality.

The Quadratec hitch package with the hitch, wiring harness and Jeep hitch plug is the way I went. Bolt on, the wiring harness plugs directly into the tail light on the drivers side, you just have to ground it. Great value.

I got the rugged ridge, bolt on, wiring harness is plug and play, and it doesn't stick out from the bumper like some of the others do. That way I don't have to worry about cracking my shin on the receiver when the hitch is off!!
However some people stated it didn't stick out far enough for their bike rack to fit around the spare. I don't have a bike rack so no biggie for me!

nknacd, where are you located? I have a brand new Mopar hitch sitting on my garage floor that I took off last night, Jeep has 50 miles on it. Put on a new bumper that had a hitch integrated into it.

I hope you realize that the receivers that are built into the bumpers are not rated for towing.

Smittybilt XRC bumper with built in tow is rated as a class 3 tow hitch...

+1 on the Rugged Ridge reciever.
It's a heavy duty class III reciever, the stock Mopar one is only rated to 200 lbs.
Lets just say I put a lot of faith in having a good hitch reciever on my Jeep and 200 lbs ain't gonna cut it.

I bought the Hidden Hitch brand over the Smittybilt/Rugged Ridge brand because A) The welds looked like crap on the Smitty/RR, B) The hitch tube sticks out farther to clear the spare tire on the HH which is very helpful with some boat trailers, C) The safety chain attachment points are not in the way of the hitch pin on the HH, D) the wiring harness that goes with the HH is only $9.99 and works like a charm, E) The nuts are welded onto the HH already so it doesn't take 4 arms to install like some brands.

I couldn't be happier. $80 total from Q-tec and I use it all the time.

Interestingly, they state that on the TJ and not the JK model.

SJ, IF nknacd doesn't want your hitch, let me know how much and I will take it.

Thanks,
David

I saw that as well. Ended up calling them to confirm it was. I knew I would use it for it's intended purpose and needed to be certain.

Fyi, anyone looking to install this, I did it solo but it would have been MUCH easier if there was someone helping. Also, their directions are just 'ok'.

Depending on your gearing, you've got to be careful on the hitch as well as the tongue weight cap. The Quadratec hitch and lite pkg is awesome $89.00. As someone earlier said really easy to bolt on. Its only rated for 200 lb tongue and 2000 lb trailer. The 2012 wrangler unlimited with the 3.23 rear is only rated for that capacity. It is a great looking package.

Can you please post few more pics to show how the bike is mounted?

Thanks!

Thanks for all th help. The most i would be a canoe and small trailer for trips to home depot and the dump so I think the hidden hitch or quadratec one should do the job. From the sounds of it the hisden hitch seems easier to put on

We are looking for a Falcon 2 number 1429-1 vehicle bracket from Roadmaster. If you have one for sale we are interested in purchasing it for a 2007 Jeep Wrangler.
Thank you,
Tamm

Just ordered the Q-Tec hitch for my JKU. Found out they offer a 5% military discount so I saved a bit more on an already great deal. They said it should ship Tuesday (or so), so hopefully I should have it by next weekend or very shortly thereafter.

Thanks to all for the recommendation on this particular hitch. From all I've read on this and other threads, it sounds like a great product. I look forward to the easy install and letting it do its job towing my jonboat a few days later.

I just put in this hitch today and didn't have to lower the muffler. It was a very simple install. Though one of the nuts wouldn't allow the bolt to thread through very easily. I'm not sure which wiring kit you are getting but the rugged ridge one is very easy,

I also installed the Hidden Hitch brand receiver.....MADE IN USA.... Looks good, went on as it should.
Hidden Hitch does stick out a little farther under the overhang of the spare tire.
If I had to do it over, I'd buy this brand again !
Bought mine from Quadratec, got the free shipping, it was in stock !! I also ordered the wireing harness....Simple plug in deal....
I use mine quite often to drag around my small fold up utility trailer...Full of a Yard of planting mix soil, or a yard of bark dust....or firewood...
I also use the hitch to pull out shrub roots !! "BH"

I have the Smittybuilt rear bumper w/ tire carrier.

There's a small silver plate near the receiver that is engraved and states the weight specs (you can see it in the attached pic):

500lb tongue weight, 5000lb tow capacity

I have no intention of pushing it to those full specs, but at least the bumper itself is rated to handle it.
