Towed without consent. What would you do?

Ok I have an issue, and I'm not sure what to do about it.

I work at a hospital. They are sprucing things up for who knows what reason, and seem very desperate. For the past month or so, they have been resurfacing the parking lots and garage.

This morning, I drove bleary eyed to work and parked in a lot that was not posted in any way, with about 50 other vehicles, and went about my day.

I walked out when my shift was over to where I thought I parked and discovered that not only was my jeep not there, but the lot was roped off with a fresh coat of blacktop and was completely empty.

So myself thinking that I was half asleep when I parked and just forgot, started walking around for the next 30 minutes looking for my jeep. I finally found it somewhere that I knew very well I did NOT park it.

Well come to find out when I asked around, a friend of mine said there was a fleet of tow trucks out there MOVING the cars out of the lot so it could be resurfaced. Crazy right? There was no consent, there was no warning. If anyone announced it overhead I sure didn't hear it. They moved my 34k brand new jeep without asking.

Now, the question is, what can I do? What if 3 months down the road something breaks because the jack asses hooked it up wrong?

What would you do if you were me?

Think about the only thing you can do is get it documented that this company movewd your vehicle on this date without your consent. Also id check and see what type agreements I signed when I hired in to that job. Im betting you either signed something saying while on company property you were subject to their decions or theres a sign in the lot saying park at own risk. or something to that effect.
Best thing you could do is have a certified mechanic check your vehicle over for any damages and then file against the tow company if there are any. Its a lose lose situation. Hopefully your Jeep is fine. After all they are set up a lot easier to tow than say a Mercedes.

First, you work in an "at will" state. That place could fire you for starting what they perceive as trouble.
Just make sure something is wrong before you buck the system. People now-a-days get canned for standing up, wrong or right, it's the way it is.

You'd think the way this country has gotten so PC, that this wouldn't happen...sadly, it does.....best of luck and hopefully nothing is wrong:thumb:

LOL, I'm no fan of political correctness, but c'mon... Do you really think "towing someone's car" falls under anybody's definition of politically incorrect behavior? :)

Well, unless of course "Bent Jeep" refers to the fact that he's not "Straight Jeep", in which case you may have a point!

I'm sure there is but, as a police officer, I'd be willing to bet it wouldn't apply in this case. The business moved a vehicle parked on their private property in order to do some maintenance. There doesn't appear to be any criminal intent in their actions. Now if, while moving the vehicles, they caused some damage, they could be held civilly liable.

Sadly man you were on private property as an employee. They can pretty much do whatever they want. I cannot speak for your hospital, but we have signs that say essentially say they are not responsible for anything if you are parked in their garage or lot. Ask human resources about it? Good luck, I am betting if any damage was done you would know on your first drive home.

This is BS, he's an employee and I'd imagine has some sort of permission/permit to park on the lot, doesn't give someone the right to do what they want to your property. Now if it were posted that lot was being paved and he parked, well that would be his fault, if not then what they did is BS.

Now if he were parked on private property without permission, then I'd say they can get it towed for whatever reason.

Maybe go to hospital security to obtain video of the parking lot, and the towing of the vehicles to see how it was done?

Any chance the hospital had this posted somewhere and you missed it?

^ They're right! Private property. You parked your property on theirs. They can move it. Should they have notified you, sure. That would have been the courteous and probably cheaper alternative. But unless something is wrong with your Jeep, move on. No harm, no foul.

Yeah. It sucks! Before I got my JK I had a Patriot(don't ask) it was right after I got it and lived in home owners assoc. I was waiting for my new parking permit and the HOA nazi had my brand new vehic towed(honestly just didn't like me because I'm a cop). Cost me $175 to get it back for parking in front of "my own" house and doing what I was supposed to do and following the rules. I no longer live there and will never live in another HOA.

To your original post... I doubt there's anything you can do. I'm sure they will say there were notifications made(maybe through email) if it was an employee lot. Where I work vehicles are towed and relocated all the time. We have to check with radio before taking a stolen vehicle report

I would bet they put it on dollies on the rear and lifted the front, or else they dragged it, which I highly doubt. Don't sweat it, be glad they didn't bill you for the tow.

they will probably do a payroll deduction for the towing fee lol.

So, the hospital would rather hire a fleet of tow trucks and pay them to move approx. 50 vehicles then to notify it's employees or simply rope off or sign the lot. Sounds like a good business plan. They keep spending like that you'll have to look for a new job anyway. If they moved it a short distance you should be fine. You and the other 50 should leave it alone unless you're going to move on.
