Towing around 4k with 07 Unlimited

Hey Guys,
I was just wondering what your thoughts were on towing a 20ft boat thats 3500lbs but with gas/other accessories probably brings it up a few hundred pounds with a 2007 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. I know the capacity of it is 3500 but is there anything drastically bad going a few hundred pounds over.
Ill also only be towing no more than 3 miles and no more than 45mph around maybe 3 times a week

Last month I pulled around 3500 lbs with my TJ for 400 mile between 55 & 75 mph with no problems. TJ's are only rated for 2500lbs. So you shouldn't have any problems towing 500lbs. over spec.

I'm sure it'll work.

Of course, it is contrary to the instructions that come with the product, and is not likely to work in your favor if you end up in an accident.

It's like riding with kids in the back of your pickup truck--you can do it, but it's not recommended and is at core not really a good idea.

Will probably be fine, but proceed at your own risk.

The heavier your cargo gets the issue is you being over run by your trailer in heavy breaking or being unable to control trailer sway in high winds or at higher speeds. You can buy for about $800 a trailer sway bar kit that will control the sway of the trailer (or you can rent them from u-haul if you are not planning to haul on a regular basis). Secondly I would recommend having a trailer brake controller and a trailer with trailer brakes (if you don't have it already). Other then that I see no reason why it shouldn't be able to haul the load. Just take er easy

People who are saying it is "ok" and "should be fine" should have their heads examined.

It is NOT OK to tow over your max rating. Lots of things could go wrong by towing over the rated capacity for a vehicle.. And when it does, you will most likely not be covered by your insurance company, and will be personally liable for any and all injuries you cause...

Its not worth the risk to you, and I certainly dont think its worth you Hurting ME or someone I love, to drive your rig overloaded!!

If you want a tow rig for a big boat.... Buy a Truck!!

YUP, of course you're only going three times a week at 45 mph and you think it's OK, you'll get an anti-sway hookup from Some trailer co. and get the best trailer brakes system designed by Bill Gates--

The first time your in trouble with some other vehicle--the insurance co. looks at your JEEP trailertowing limit--

Speaking from someone who used to have a Tacoma (which is capable of towing 5000#) to tow my boat, what I learned is that it isn't so much the towing that is the real problem, it is the braking (primary) and the stress the weight puts on the frame and transmission (secondary). If you are going to do it, allow for plenty of stopping distance, drive slower than 45, and the boat trailer may already have brakes at being 20'. Here in Texas, now it has been awhile, but 20' seems to be the magic number where some do and some don't. I wouldn't expect swaying to be much of an issue at that speed.

  • What does the launch ramp look like?
  • Is there algae?
  • Is there much of an incline? The steeper the incline, the more stress it'll put on the frame.

Just some things to consider though I'm not endorsing trailering a 20' boat. I suspect though if you are asking, you are probably leaning towards doing it and using the justification of the mph and the distance cited to rationalize it. In reality, you would probably be okay but in the off chance something happens...


Sell the boat and get two personal watercraft and some tubes and have a blast!

Curious how it goes...

Currently driving an F150 but I joined this forum because I've been kicking around the idea of going back to a Jeep (I really miss it in the summer months) but I have a boat.. Seadoo challanger 180. The unlimited should pull this no probably (it's around 2000lbs dry) but if I get a bigger boat in the future I'd be cutting it kind of close

It's not only the tow weight of the boat and trailer you have to look at the weight load of the hitch which will only be 350lbs max. The 3500lb boat and trailer will produce more the 350 lbs of down weight on the hitch.

How come ours are rated at 5000 lb with trailer brakes (1650lb without brakes)?

This being the case I cant see any problems with the exception of your insurance should you have an accident.

Mechanically, you probably will be OK if it is only a short ride.

But one thing you should consider is liability. If you get in an accident and determined to be at fault while pulling an overweight trailer, your insurance company has all the right to deny coverage. This may not be a big deal, or it may be a life-wrecking situation. If you happen to cause any injuries, you can kiss your Jeep and retirement savings good-bye. The lawyers will eat you alive.

I assume you are referring to the United States when making that statement. In Canada (as far as I understand it) it is not illegal to pull an over weight trailer. The insurance company is only able to deny you your liability coverage in the comission of a criminal offense. Now this still doesn't make a good idea to do and I suppose at some point it is negligant to pull a trailer too heavy..just saying. Seems like your best Idea is to just spend a grand or so and buy a tow vehicle that you only use to tow the boat...some older half ton truck or something...
