Towing capacity for non Max Tow JKU

Hi all,

I'm picking up my 2013 JKU Sahara tomorrow... can't frickin wait!

In my excitement I forgot to get the Max Tow package and now I'm confused as to what this means. My Jeep is a standard transmission and the dealer is telling me this means my towing capacity is effectively greater than 2000lbs. I've asked him to put that in writing and of course he's saying he can't do that.

His rationale is that the Max Tow really only adds greater cooling capacity to the automatic JKU... so he's saying that with manual and a proper hitch I should be fine.

I want to point out that I'm not planning on hauling anything crazy... just a pop-up trailer with a dry weight of 1650lbs. But I'd like to hear from anyone in a similar position...

Thanks!

Standard Tow Package is Class II Receiver and 4 pin trailer wiring. Max Tow Package includes 3.73 rear gears in place of the standard 3.21 rear gears, nothing in the specs about greater cooling capacity.

Your 2013 JKU towing capacity is 3,500 lbs. Put your own class II hitch and wiring harness on (about $100) and you're good to go.

I disagree...... The max tow package is basically adding 3.73 gears. Unless you specially ordered the 3.73 gears, you were given the standard 3.21 gears on your 2013 JKU Sahara. (That's why they have a Max Tow package).

The 3.21 gears are rated for a 2000 pound tow capacity. The 3.73 is rated for 3500 pounds. Again, the only difference between the trailer tow group and the Max tow package is the gears.

You should be fine towing your tent trailer.

And the difference in 3:21 and 3:73 is so small most will not notice with stock tires.

^^^ This is correct if you have 3.21s. I keep forgetting that some folks actually prefer 3.21s to 3.73s. But 3.21s do dramatically lower your towing capacity, as D-ninga pointed out.....

This is an old thread...but...Kingmatt....your dealer is an idiot. There is no extra cooling package available. If you have 3.21's on your 4 door, your limit it 2000 pounds. If you have 3.73's (or 4.10's on a Rubi), your limit is 3500 pounds.

Can the "engine" pull more than that? Yes....but there are other factors in play with regards to the tow limit. Also, just because you don't have max tow does not mean you don't have 3.73 gears....of course that assumes you actually ordered 3.73's and passed on the tow package. (That is what I did).

Manual? Depends on the speed, conditions, and weight of boat. You may end up driving like normal (outside of getting started). Or maybe one gear lower than normal. Just don't lug the engine.

I had a '12 JK with the 6m and 3.21. It will pull that 1600lb camper just fine. That being said, I now have a '13 JKU, with the max tow pkg, and it pulls my 3500 lb boat (18.5 ft Regal), but it struggles. I wouldnt want to yank more than 2000lb around with 3.21's, especially with a JK.

My 2013 auto came with 3.21's and barely could pull 2k. I installed 4.10's and now it is MUCH better.

Remember the (2) tow packages also include software for "trailer sway control"
