Towing Package

I am planning on getting a 2012 Sahara and was told by a salesman that the 3.73 gears are included automatically with the tow package. I didn't see 3.73 written anywhere on the sticker. Can someone verify this is true?

From what I know I don't think so, it is an added option.

you can have one or the other or both

Max tow package is equipped with both

For the 2012' Sports and Sahara's (Rubi's excluded)

3.73's are included with "Max Tow".....however...."Trailer Tow" does NOT come with the 3.73 axle.

Of course, you can order "Trailer Tow" AND the 3.73 axle for the exact same price is "Max Tow".....

I'm not even going to get into the Trailer Sway stuff....

Jeep basically just screwed things up...

That isn't correct....

Or if it IS correct...that has been updated recently.
This is from the Jeep Build your own website for a Sahara Unlimited. I still have PDF copies of a Sahara Window sticker with Trailer Tow and 3.21's.

Trailer Tow Group:
Class II Receiver Hitch
Trailer Sway Damping
Trailer Tow with 4-Pin Wiring Connector

Max Tow Group:
3.73 Rear Axle Ratio
A numerically lower axle ratio results in lower engine rpm and better fuel economy. A numerically higher ratio improves acceleration, climbing grades, carrying loads or pulling a trailer.
Class II Receiver Hitch
Trailer Tow with 4-Pin Wiring Connector

Well, that's Chrysler. Two different published options sheets. No wonder it's confusing. Can't tell you who's right at this point. I guess it's the spin test to find out what you have at this point.

I ordered a 2012 2 dr Sahara. I ordered the Trailer Tow Group (AHT). I also chose the 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio (DME) thinking that I would have to pay $45 for it. My POC shows the option but there is no charge listed next to it. So perhaps you have to choose it if you want it, but don't have to pay extra for it when you have the tow group?

Hmmm...maybe they are finally getting around to correcting their mistake.

It never made sense to have two different tow groups. The big issue a few months ago was why "trailer tow" had trailer sway control, while "max tow" didn't have trailer sway control (but did have 3.73's). So people would order trailer tow, along with the 3.73 axle as a separate option.

Now I'm seeing 3.73's being added for free.

Thanks for the replies. Forgot to mention I am getting the 2-door Sahara.

So it looks like I need to find one with the Trailer Tow Group (AHT) AND the 3.73 gears listed separately on the sticker correct?

Well I didn;t order my '11 Sport "S" but had to have a hitch so I ended up with 3.21's and a great receiver hitch and 4 pin harness added by my dealer.......I kinda wish I had the choice of ordering but as this was the ONLY Sahara Tan in my area with a 6spd I pulled the trigger.

Maybe if I had found this site BEFORE I bought I might have thought twice....but I didn;t and what I don;t have I don;t miss.

My boat, motor, trailer is likely to run about 750-850 lbs total so no issue here BUT I would like to know about the trailer sway dampening commented on above.

Could you elaborate on this? Just for info purposes, to date I love my set up and the 3.21's are ok by me as is the 3.8L.

So I was looking over this thread again for all of the standards...and there are a couple of things that stood out:

http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/201...ad-101089.html

2 Door Sport options:
3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO $50 ($45)
TRAILER TOW GROUP $270 ($240)

2 Door Sahara options:
3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO $50 ($45) (incl. w/Trailer tow)
TRAILER TOW GROUP $270 ($240)

2 Door Rubi options:
4.10 REAR AXLE RATIO $00 ($00) (Standard on 6-speed; no charge option on 5-speed auto)
TRAILER TOW GROUP $270 ($240)

4 Door Sport options:
3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO $50 ($45) (no extra charge with AHT trailer tow)
MAX TOW PACKAGE $320 ($285)
TRAILER TOW GROUP $270 ($240) / $25 ($22) with Max Tow package

4 Door Sahara options:
3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO $50 ($45)
MAX TOW PACKAGE $320 ($285)
TRAILER TOW GROUP $270 ($240)

4 Door Rubi options:
4.10 REAR AXLE RATIO $00 ($00) (Standard on 6-speed; no charge option on 5-speed auto)
MAX TOW PACKAGE $320 ($285)
TRAILER TOW GROUP $270 ($240)

AHQ MAX TOW PACKAGE (Unlimited models only)

Includes:
3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO (DME) (except Rubicon Unlimited which stays at 4.10)
CLASS II RECEIVER HITCH (XFN)
TRAILER SWAY DAMPING (BNT)
TRAILER TOW W/4-PIN CONNECTOR WIRING (XFU)

AHT TRAILER TOW GROUP

Includes:
3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO (DME) (except Rubicon which stays at 4.10)
CLASS II RECEIVER HITCH (XFN) (Sport Unlimited, Sahara Unlimited)
TRAILER SWAY DAMPING (BNT)
TRAILER TOW W/4-PIN CONNECTOR WIRING (XFU)
------------

OK...."Max Tow" is only available on the Unlimiteds..... I think that is correct.

Now...since when was 4.10's on the Rubi's with automatic's a no charge cost? And since when were 3.73's a no charge option with Trailer Tow (instead of max Tow). If that is the case...why would anyone order Max Tow on an unlimited? Max Tow is $50 more expensive (for the axle) and does not even list Trailer Sway (which all Wranglers have anyway)?

I have a 2012 JK Sport, Automatic, with Tow package and 3.21 gears. Was under the impression 3.73 were standard with Auto and Tow, rookie mistake. Should have looked on this forum before the purchase. Luckily, I don't plan on larger tires and I like the performance of the jeep.

You have to order the 3.73 separately. I ordered the tow package on my 12 and had to pay the $50 for the 3.73 gearing

Jeep is probably doing some system upgrade.....and will have "gear-gate" part two....

They could make this a lot easier for everyone by getting rid of the max tow package. Just have a regular tow package and a separate option for 3.73's (for the Sport and Sahara) and 4.10's (for the Rubi).

Avoid the tow package. Just order the 3.73 and buy a hitch later. Check Amazon.

It's a good way to save some cash for other mods.

I don't know - the factory tow option seems pretty reasonable to me. $270 including the hitch, wiring, and trailer sway damping isn't too bad. Would cost close to that to have it installed after. I paid around $250 to have a hitch put on my wife's vehicle - but her factory option was almost $500.

I think for $270, or even closer to $250 if you are getting invoice or below, it's a good option to get.

Then according to my dealer you would miss out on the sway control program which is an add-on similar to ESC that is only included with the tow package. It would be nice to get some official explanation because everything to date just sounds like speculation to me.

If you look in the owners manual, sway control is standard....but I don't know if it is "turned on".

There is also the "chance" that you will get higher rated springs with the tow package....but that is also more speculation.

For Wranglers, the hitch is easy to install. The holes are already there. Should take max 45 minutes. Check YouTube for vids.

Not to confuse the issue, but today while checking several online dealer inventory window stickers, I found several Sahara JKs with tow package and 3:73 added as a $50 option. However, I also found two JKs,both with tow and auto trans; one had 3:21 and one had 3:73. Neither ratios were seperate options but were listed as part of the auto option. Tow only mentioned the hitch, wiring, and that other thing, stability control or what ever it is. Not sure how you can order the auto trans option and get a changed rear end gear ratio to be included in it.

Yeah...I posted a link earlier which showed a non Rubi (Sahara) JKU with 3.73's at no cost and with no tow package.

Who knows that is going on....

There is a post from Pat@FieldsJeep, in here somewhere, that noted that Jeep has clarified tow group vs. Max tow. The big mixup was that sway damping wasn't listed on max tow - but it is there, it was just a mistake.

So they are identical except max tow adds 3.73 and costs $50 more (same as if you bought separately). 3.73 gives you 3500 tow capacity on the JKU. 2-door is 2000 only.

Yeah, we know....the but according to this thread, some people have gotten trailer tow (not max tow) with 3.73's at no charge in a non Rubi. There are also window stickers that show 3.73's at no charge on non Rubi's without a tow package. One of them is linked a few posts up.

Sorry, yeah I saw that, this thread is kinda touching on everything tow so I just thought I'd add this as the whole max tow thing was a challenge when I ordered.

Can't add much else but speculation. It does seem like a JKU owner wanting a tow package is going to want 3500 capacity, so why not force 3.73 at no charge. The $50 is nothing anyway, probably just an effort to sell enough 3.21 to meet gas mileage standards, for those who don't care about the higher ratio. It was probably causing a lot of confusion.

I also think I read that manual trans is 2000 lbs max no matter what ratio... Which might explain how the 3.73 got listed under the auto transmission.

THe pre 2012 tow pkg had 3.73......system wasnt updated when ordering for the 2012 opened messing stuff up. It has since changed to reflect the option to change gears for $50 and no longer listed under the tow pkg.

I know from expierence and waiting for 2 jeeps that on the 2 door non rubi they come with 3.21tow pkg or not.....the 3.73 is a $50 option. The order system reflects this currently...if sticker has 3.21 on the left but nothing changing that on right then you have 3.21 sorry.

The max tow on the unlimiteds will add 3.73.
