Towing the new Wrangler

Hey Gang.
We just bought a red 2012 Wrangler Sport S Unlimited. Very cool. Still only has 48 miles on it. Lot more power than our Prius. MPG isn’t quite as good but when averaged out with the Prius our household MPG is quite good.
We bought the Wrangler primarily as a tow vehicle behind our motorhome. Seems like we go to a lot of places that you need a 4 wd vehicle to get to many of the great hiking trailheads. Especially in the Colorado Rockies.
Here is my 1st newbie question. Does the steering wheel have a lock? We heard that towing the Wrangler was as simple as placing the regular shift lever on P and the 4wd lever in N. The owners manual says for towing the Wrangler key should be in the acc position and the battery negative cable disconnected. Kinda pain in the butt to do this.
Now if the wheel doesn’t lock there would be no reason not to simply remove the key. Which would mean no drain on the battery and no reason to disconnect the battery.
From another board I was told that Jeep stopped putting a wheel lock in begining with 09 model year but haven't updated the owners manual yet.
Am I correct on this?

I have a 2012 JKU that I am planning to Tow behind my MH as well. The locking steering column ended in 2008 or 2009 so towing should not be affected by the Key, that also means there is no fuse to pull to stop an electrical drain.
You might want to check out 1RV2.com/forums there is very good info on Towing Jeeps started by wtondu in the Toads and Towing section. I have bought a Currie Industries base plate made for the JK series Jeeps and a Blue Ox Tow Bar. The Currie will accept Blue Ox and other Tow Bars at $199. it is good quality and inexpensive compared to others.The installation seems easy but bthere is a bit of fitting involved for the 2011 and 2012 years, it replaces the Plastic Air Dam and protects as well as looks better. I have participated in the discussion about this.

We are in the process of purchasing a new jeep also, well we ordered it and have signed all the paper work just waiting on it to be delivered. I've talked to quite a few people towing JKs and all have said there is nothing to be done other than "place the auto in Park and the transfer case in Neutral."
We have a Blue Ox tow bar and purchased a Rockhard4x4 bumper with the Blue Ox adapter instead of a base plate. Just another option.

The OP is correct and there is no steering lock. Neither the manuals or the toad charts that are taken from the manuals are up to date. Forums such as RV.net discuss this, along with being tried and proven.
As for tow equipment, I've been looking long and hard at Demco, including their surge braking system.

subscribed!! Anyone using a roadmaster sterling tow bar and the AEV premium bumper? I have used the tow bar on our CRV for 10 years and plan on putting the AEV on the new Jeep soon.

I remember reading somewhere, (can't remember where of course) that the steering wheel does lock, but only after a half turn, 180deg.

Note/Important: JK's manufactured from 2007 to mid 2008 did in fact have a steering wheel lock mechanism and thus the key had to be left in the ignition, the key turned, (IOD fuse disengaged or battery disconnected on long trips) when you flat towed. Some late 2008 and very early production 2009 Wrangler JK's have a steering wheel lock so no one can make a blanket statement and say all 2008 and 2009's can be towed with key turned to off and key out of ignition. SO, on older than 2010/2011 Wrangler JK's you need to ascertain if your Wrangler JK has or does not have a steering wheel lock before you flat tow.

My 08 steering most certainly locked. I now have a 2012 and I have read that it does not,,, and I'm sure that is true but my manual says to do all the same things I did with my 08 so,,,,, I just do it . We don't tow alot and normally only a couple hours when we do so I error to the safe side.
I have a ARB aftermarket front bumper and everyone said a tow system could not be bought for it,,,, I may be a cautious person but I don't take no or it can't be done very well

wow, all ours have steering wheel locks (2007 to 2012) and since they left the indicators one the same side as the US vehicles I would have assumed it was the same steering column. Another bizarre export anomaly!

But as for flat towing, yeah transfer case in neutral and make sure steering is unlocked if you have one - hence the recommendation for key to accessories. Not only will removing the battery at this point stop it from draining, but since the odometer is electronic I would think this will also stop it racking up mileage while towing - not 100% on that but just a thought.

hdrider is that a roadmaster towbar? It looks really similar if not. Did you have to modify it at all?

All I just went out and checked my 2102 JKUR steering does not lock

Yours is the 1st of about 20 comments from 2011-2012 owners that said wheel locked.
I emailed Jeep customer service and they wrote that they couldn't tell me if the wheel locked or not and I should ask the dealer!!! What is up with that?
BTW I turned the wheel all the way to the stop and turned off the ignition. It didn't appear to lock. Is this an OK way to check?

The US 2012 Wrangler steering wheels DO NOT lock. PLEASE read this attachment it is from the 2012 Manual.

We just got done doing this ,Roadmaster All
Terrain tow bar and mounting hardware. Even brake, brake unit for the jeep, skirt for the rear of the MH, and the tow defender screen ,to protect the jeep from rocks and things .When the lights of the MH are on ,it cuts the battery power in the jeep via a relay .You still need the jeep ing. in the Acc position . Lots of money ,was not cheap, install complete was 4,000… but you don't even know the jeep in back there…. I am happy ,good luck with your choice of products.

Yep,,, Road master. I did have to take the ARB bumper off and put it back on to make it all work together but that's OK. That sucker is not going anywhere

Thanks. Can you explain further?
Does this mean if you are driving in the daylight you don't have to put the key in the acc position? I'm a bit confused since the ownwers manual says to disconnect the jeep's battery. If the battery is disconnected what does leaving the key in the acc. do?
We are having our Roadmaster base plate and electrical installed on Monday in out 2012.

I have a 2007 JK and it does have the steering lock, which activates when the wheel is turned 180 degrees with the key out or off. The key must be turned to the accessory position to defeat the lock. I have the Blue Ox tow bar, base plate and wiring kit which adds an additional bulb to the rear lights. I have to pull fuse #15 plus the IOD fuse before towing--a PITA. 2009 and later JK's do not have to do this as there is no steering lock.

The JK is a great tow vehicle--just put the transfer case in neutral, put the gearbox into gear (automatics into park) and go.

Dan ,when you turn the running or head Lights ON in the MH, it cuts off the battery in the Jeep, and key still needs to be in the acc position .
(way it was explained to me ) 12 volts to the Evenbrake is from the Jeep battery wired thru a 12 volt plug under dash that was installed .
Plus its better to run with running lights during day saftey.
No fuse pulling this or that ...
The Even brake, to setup is ok, I have a bad back, only takes about 5 to 7 min . if that, but to hook to pedel , and to brain box mounted on Kick panel ,I half to bend twist not good ,but I am not going to have them remount in a more eurgo position ,I just take my time ...
I am happy with the equipment ,I have been on 1 trip , so I hope I can say that after a dozen .

Towing a 2012 JKU

I have towed my 2012 JKU Rubicon Automatic about 1000 miles so far. To confirm what some people have said...
1. No,the steering does not lock or require a key to keep unlocked
2. The battery or IOD fuse is a thing of the past (older models)
3. It is perhaps the most painless auto I have ever towed

I have towed three other cars/SUVs, mostly automatics. Two were Hondas that required special battery care, keys to unlock the wheel, and frequent cycling the engine to lube the transmission. The Wrangler is "connect, and forget, go as far as you want at any speed". Other than my lifted Wrangler weighing about 800 lbs more than my last TOAD, a Honda Pilot, I think it tows, turns and sways less than my old Honda. Very steady even with 35 inch Nittos.

I have a Roadmaster XL towbar mount system under my stock bumper. I use a Roadmaster Air Brake system for the aux brakes (required in most states over 3000lb towed), and a CoolTech wiring harness. It literally takes me 3-5 minutes to connect. The only tricky thing is read the manual 10 times about the sequence to put the rig in neutral. The manual is not really written in a "checklist" format and it's easy to gloss over a step.

Thinks about lift kits affecting your TOAD. I knew a kit would somewhat. I put on a 2.5 inch RK lift and the 35 inch Nitto's and I had to use a 4inch receiver hitch riser to make the towbar level. (According to Roadmaster info towbar should sit level +- 3inches or it won't tow correctly).

Towed 2012 Bumper updating

I submitted the previous pics of a Roadmaster setup using their Roadmaster 1432-3 mounts on a stock bumper. I plan on adapting/cutting/welding the Roadmaster mounts to work with either an ARB or AEV front bumper in the future. (One mod at a time!)

Thanks HDRIDER for the pics of your ARB bumper with the Roadmaster mounts. I think they are either the 1430s or a custom welded version from another car. You gave me hope an ARB bumper will work with my mounts.

Did you give a looksee at Demco equipment with their surge brake system and if so, what do you think of it?

Sorry, I don't know anything about the Demco surge brake system. I've seen their towbars and mounts, which are popular on Wranglers, but I don't know anything about their braking system.

It seems in the past few years the small electric braking "R2D2" gadget that sits on the floor and plugs into 12V are the most popular. I had modified my RV years ago with the Roadmaster Air Braking system, and had almost $1000 in it, so when I bought my 2012 JK I just bought the parts needed to set it up as a 2 nd vehicle.

You definitely want a towed vehicle brake. I forgot to hook mine up once and had to do a panic brake to avoid some idiot in a small car weaving lanes and the stopping distance was eye watering.

So far I can't find any complaints about Demco surge brakes and it does eliminate the electric. Also nothing further is needed and you're always good to go.
With this R2D2, I guess you're talking something like a brake buddy with an arm that attaches to the brake pedal?
As for brakes or no brakes, the former is mandatory as far as I'm concerned, unless your coach is a large DP and the toad is very light. I've seen a lot of older Jeeps behind these large rigs with no toad braking, but in the case of the JKU, we're looking at over 2 tons.

Towed Jeep Brakes

Yes, when I said "R2D2" type braking sytems I meant self contained ones like Brake Buddy.

As for brake laws I saw a chart today that only North Dakota had no laws concerning towed brakes. Texas is second requiring brakes above 4500 lbs and a stock Wrangler might be 4500 lbs.

I don't know if Demco is one, but some tow bars have braking built into them.

If you look here: My Jeep: Jeep Owners Service Manuals - 4x4 SUVs, Sports Utility Vehicles, Off Road and you look up 2012 Jeep Wrangler, there are 3 manuals you can download:
  • Owner's Manual
  • Supplement
  • User Guide

The Owner's Manual still has the same outdated instructions, but the User Guide has been updated - it no longer includes the instructions about leaving the keys in the ignition or disconnecting the battery - see page 80 & 81.

Had a 2000 toad with Blue Ox towbar and Apollo brake system. Had to leave ignition unlocked - also had cig outlet with constant DC power. Recently purchased 2012 JK 2 dr - had to purchase new baseplate to accomodate JK. Wrote Jeep customer service (I provided my VIN) re:wheel lock and received following response: "According to our records your vehicle should not be equipped with a steering wheel lock; therefore, there should be no need to leave the ignition key in the unlocked/off position and disconnect the negative battery cable.
You can verify that your vehicle is not equipped with a steering wheel lock by performing the following test: Vehicle started - turn the steering wheel to the full lock, hold it against the stop, then turn off the vehicle and validate the steering wheel is not locked while turning all the way back to center straight forward position."

I performed their recommended test and determined my JK has no steering wheel lock. Now, i found myself faced with another problem: needing 12 volts DC to power the Apollo system and radio transmitter, I needed the key in the accessory position. But wait: I happened to have a raw 12v DC in my center console, which will do the job. I'm happy now.
