So I got 50 acres recently and I need to get a caravan 16 foot up a muddy hill... Its quite steep and around 100 metres long.. When wet my jeep jk wrangler slides a little getting up there but I manage to get up there without to much difficulty and dont currently have mud tyres on it but i am not towing anything either. If it rained heavily the night before I cant get up the hill though.
I am worried and with good reason that I wont be able to get the caravan up there so my question is will mud tyres provide me with enough traction to tow the caravan up there without any trouble ?? I know its difficult to answer with out seeing it but never had mud tyres and dont know how great of a difference they would make .. on the deepest mud section of the hill which is near a bend I would guess its around 20cm deep mud/clay and around 10-30 metres long.
Other than tyres is there anything else I could do to my jeep to help me get up there?? Its either upgrade the jeep or pay around 5k to get the road laid with gravel or something similar and compacted...
Tires make all the difference and not knowing or seeing the road or trailer I can't say that they will or won't make the difference. They will increase the odds of making it. Additionally posi's or lockers will also improve your chances. If it's hard on the bottom they will most likely make the difference. You can always winch or use a come along to help you get through the spots where you can make it. Depending on how often you need haul things up the road the long term answer maybe to improve the road so that it is much easier to make it. If the trailer gets mired it could make extracting it challenging especially if you end up high centered with it.
Yeah it's a tough question to answer there are too many variables to say "it will make it for sure or not" with that said, a set of chains, or better yet chains on all 4 tires, that will be way better than any set of mud tires, and its hard to justify a new set of tires to tow something 100 meters. You would not believe where a set of chains will take a vehicle!
How long will it take to let it dry out? Are you able to winch it up the hill? Mud tires might help the jeep, but add in the weight of the trailer and could be worse off. What about daisy strapping a couple of jeeps and the trailer up the hill?
Im not sure how long to be honest I only just bought the property last month and it has rained a LOT this month (record rain fall) I do have a winch but i need to purchase an anchor. I dont have any friends that own jeeps unfortunately .. seeing as I live in the city no one drives real 4wds that i know. Only mate that has a 4wd has a 2015 mercedes benz and there is no way he will bring it through that mud lol..
Australian mud, what a challenge!
I have to say you're unprepared for this event. Get a mate (two if necessary)with a winch and anchor point to hoist/pull them up the incline.
As the hill dries out with the spinning tires etc. it may dry out enough for the rest to follow unassisted. I assume (ass/u/me) some Jeeps will be equipped with the right tires and that will help dig off the top wet/messy stuff.
Watch my friend Stumpy on this hill in his XJ and then me in my old JK. Mud on top of frozen clay.
Stump has mud tires, open rear diff, locked front diff. I have open/open diffs and the stock brake-lock traction aid; I'm also on all terrain tires.
I got up the hill easier because I aired-down to 17 psi. Stump had a hard time with better tires because he was at street pressure.
Thanks for all the good advice fellas! I will take it all on board. Anyone know if these style mud/snow chains are any good ? anyone tried them out? They are cheaper and easier to fit as Iam having difficulty finding anything here in Syd. Seeing as iam in the city and it does not snow here all auto shops i have tried do not have them..
The link to the image seems to be broken, at least I cant see anything. Im not sure if the JK's over there have different clearance or not (check your owners manual for chain clearence). But if you can get them to fit a standard set of chains or v bar chains tend to work the best in mud, but anything would be better than nothing. Just check clearance especially for a short off road trip.
Thanks mate, if I get the time I would love to! cheers
