Towing tips

Just wondering if y'all had any towing tips with the JKU. Ive towed before, but with a one ton Ram. I've been offered some furniture from Rochester NY and would have to bring it down here to MD, approx 450 miles. I'd get a 5x8 uhaul enclosed trailer. Total weight would be 2500 lbs. I'm hesitant because I don't feel like the JKU has the best brakes.

Thanks!

Don't you have a commander too? You could always tow with that. That'll tow 2500 no problem especially if you have the V8. You can tow with the wrangler too of you'd rather. I've only towed with my 2 door but I bet it can't be too much different. They have so many gadgets now like trailer sway control that it's easy. Just give yourself a little extra room when stopping if you are worried about brakes.

No commander. We just have a challenger as a 2nd car.

Oh ok sorry wrong person. Then yes you will be able to tow it no problem. It'll probably tow similarly to the ram but accelerate and brake slower. I tow a boat with my 2 door. I don't have trailer sway control and I've never had a problem.

IIRC JKU is rated to tow 2500#.

UHaul fender sticker all say "45mph limit". That seems to be good advise for all near-max-for-rig situations. They also have several versions of trailer brakes. You're not doing much mountaineering on that route are you?

I have a couple of trailers for my JK that I tow near-max without real problems...although I avoid heavy hills and stay in the slow lane.

Pay attention to the basic 'towing guy wisdom' re tongue weight, center of gravity ahead of trailer axle, don't try to speed, etc.

Shouldn't be to many hills. I've only towed a few times so I'll be taking my time. Do y'all recommend any mirrors?

Edit:

Just double checked. Manual states 3500 lbs for a JKU with max tow package.

Only planned on towing my dirbike around not much else. We'll see how it holds up

You should be fine with your stock mirrors as the trailer is only 5x8. Just adjust yours accordingly. Don't get in a hurry. Allow for plenty of room to stop, and increase your following distance a bit. You will be fine.

Take it from an old farm boy from the missouri. Driving a JK Jeep with a trailer will brake far better than a 1962 International Grain that has NO brakes. How do I know, you ask, I did it!! 13 miles to the mechanics shop. I did just like I stated above, and using the engine and old 4 speed to slow me down.
