Towing with a JKU... Looking for opinions.

My wife and I have been looking at RV's but I'm not sure I want to get into a motorhome and all that goes with it. We thought about a trailer but my deal is I wan't to take the Wrangler with us which of course I could tow with a motorhome. I have a TJ now so that would have to go in lue of a newer JKU if I were going to pull a trailer. Thing is my wife doesn't want a little pill box either.

Could I get away with towing one of these with a JKU? No cross county excersions at least I don't think so. Mostly local Tennessee destinations.

I either have to buy a motorhome and tow the TJ or get a JKU and tow a trailer.

With a jku. U only have a tow rating of 3500#. If I had the choice it would be a motorhome and tow my jeep behind it.

Motorhome would be nice and that's still on the table for sure but the maintenance and potential problems + insurance and gas on yet another vehicle can get ungodly expensive especially for how often it would get used. I'd rather put the money in a JKU and pull something I don't care that much about. Right now I'm just investigating possible scenarios.

I believe the Unlimited is only rated for 3500lbs if you have the 3.73 axle (or Max. Tow Package, which includes the 3.73)

I don't get why that number is low. My wife's Liberty is rated for 5000lbs.... and we used every oz of that pulling a loaded enclosed trailer from CA to TN. It was a piece of cake even over the rockies.

Max tow pkg in Europe with braked trailer is 2200kg, roughly 4850lbs, same rig, slightly larger rotors. All about the government standards.

The question u need to ask yourself is.... Do u feel lucky? Towing more than rated is asking for trouble. The jeep can't stop like it should with that weight. How would u feel if someone pulled out in front of u and u couldn't stop in time because ur trailer was over weight. I see this everyday. Ok rant done.

I tow over 4000 and all is just fine, but mine is a boat. A travel trailer has more tongue weight for the load than a boat trailer. Boats are also aerodynamic with less wind resistance than a TT. At 5K you have about 500lbs on the tongue which is more than the cheapo stock ClassII hitch can carry. You can get the Reese/HiddenHitch/DrawTite one instead and that is rated higher, but even that is going to be well above its rating with 500 lbs hanging on it.

If you want to go much over 4K, then maybe you could have a receiver built that would bolt into the frame as well as the cross member and give you more tongue carrying capacity. Just a thought. People with travel trailers have hitch receivers fabricated for double towing all the time.

FYI, I get about 13-14 mpg when towing which is not bad really.

Toung weight has a lot to do with the placement of the axles. Two 5000 pound trailers can have way different toung weights. Lots of boats have the axles futher back then travel trailers of the same weight resulting in more toung weight.

The Wranglers also have a maximum frontal area for trailers of 32 sq ft.

From a long time RVers perspective, if you have any doubts about a pull behind and can afford the additional expense, go the motor home route. We pulled a couple different pop-up campers with our TJ wearing them both out. We used a diesel pickup/camper and towed the Jeep for several years. We lived and traveled full time for 5 years in a 36' class A, and now have a small class C motor home that we tow the JK with.

We got away from towing with the Jeep, 'cause if you break the tow vehicle, you really are in trouble. We wheeled every weekend, and breakdowns happen. Towing just adds to the stress, but a weekend of fun can turn into a pain in the butt if you have Jeep problems and need to get your trailer home too.

Here's how we roll now...

I would say do this.
But, both of those trailers are withen the 3500 pound towing capabilties of the JKU with the Max Tow Package. (Trailer Tow Group is 2000)

So just make sure you get the Max Tow Package instead of the trailer tow group.


Question though about towing the Jeep.

How does it turn?

How big of a trailer do you need? They make some ultralight camper trailers that are within the tow rating.

To flat tow any vehicle, you must have the steering wheel unlocked if equipped with a lock. When we towed our TJ, we needed to leave the key in ignition in the unlocked position. In our '13JK, there is no steering lock so it's a snap to tow.

I had a pop up. Never towed it with a jeep. Aerodynamically it would be better than a full size. But u still got to watch the weight.

I can tow this trailer 80 mph in 6 th gear on 35s and 4.10 gearing with no problems. Having trailer brakes would help. Or upgrading to Teraflex 's big break kit might be a good idea too.

I tow an 8 foot popup camper (Jayco Sport 8), has a GVW of 1,995 lbs and I'm usually well below that. Tows very well.

Yep... works great. When flat towing, you can not back up more than a few feet, and then only in a straight line. This is seldom an issue, but just about everybody that flat towed much will say they have had to unhitch to get out of a place that required backing up of the tow vehicle. I also think it's a good idea to have a supplemental brake system.
