Trade in JK 10A for a nice TJ?

So I am 17 and a Jeep JK 10th Anniversary 2 door was my first car. I have a huge passion for cars and I love working on my jeep. I have installed an sPod, double stacked A pillar duallys, and a warn Zeon 8-S.

Now I want to add a lift and tires (all my money of course, don't get any ideas hahah) but my dad is intervening saying that its nice enough and all that isn't necessary. He brought up a great point today, saying that he would gladly trade in our JK for a TJ with low mileage that we can build up entirely. Also, it would have a manual instead of the auto in the JK.

I want to drive this car into the ground and it will be my complete daily driver.

So, what do you all think about this?

I think the 10A is almost too nice and would be better suited for someone else. I like the whole idea of a 'roughin it jeep' and a TJ matches it a bit better.

Excited to hear what you think about all this.

For my needs, no way, no day. I've had 2 TJs and loved them both, but would never trade my Jku in for one. With that being said, I would love to find the right deal on one in addition, but it could not replace it. If you're going to drive it into the ground, my opinion would be to wait a few years until more of the new is knocked off that 10A and go from there. Jeep made lots of TJs and they're going down in value every day, there'll be plenty to choose from for a lot of years. Finding a nice 10A, even 5 years from now is gonna be tough.

Btw, you're dad's right, it is nice enough and all that isn't really necessary. Fun, cool, more capable etc.....? Hell yeah! Necessary? Nope.

The thing is my dad kind of agrees, he wants to build it up with me. He had a golf gti when he was in high school that he built with his dad and wants to do the same with me. I don't think he is worried too much about the 10A, we can get plenty of money back on it. 10A's around me are going for like 35-38k. He wants a manual back in the house, and I think just a beater jeep would be best for us.

If you are not able to afford both, then keep the 10A........

well what I am thinking was this was not the right jeep for us from the get go. I don't need all those added on luxuries. Just a jeep

What we want most is a MANUAL TRANSMISSION

Sounds like you're looking for a new project. Personally, I'd keep a newer vehicle while in school, and save the wrenching for summers and/or after you graduate.

Not what you want to hear, I'm sure. Good luck in school, and the future ahead of you, whichever you choose!

I think everybody id missing your point. You want a TJ as a daily driver that you can build up, and you are selling the 10A to make room/fund it. I agree on the manual, have the fun of driving a Jeep is shifting! You'll have plenty of money to get a TJ and build it - so go for a lower mileage, and you'll have less chance of abuse. Get a Rubi that has never been off road as a starting point.

If you don't care about the whole rarity/importance of a rare Jeep, then just get a TJ. I had a 97 TJ for awhile that was my DD until I sold it in school. I have a YJ now that is my DD until I get a JKU.

I don't think my YJ is much worse than the ride in my TJ iirc. I've never been in a JK to compare.

If you are cool with the ride and the money and time that goes into it, go for the TJ. Like others mentioned, try to get an 06 Rubi or similar. I have a friend who has an 06 Rubi as her DD and she loves it.

If you still want something rare, find one of these: A Rubi LJ 6 speed manual. I can't see many of them existing, relatively speaking.

I will add my 2 cents. While I am definitely a JK guy (having owned 2 of them so far) I can understand the appeal of a more limited Jeep. I thought that way when I got my 2010 Rubi. I got a soft top, half doors and just an auto (Wanted a stick but finding one with half doors really hooked me). I ended up trading for a 2013 Sport with a lot more creature comforts (and a stick). I liked them both, but the 2013 is much more enjoyable when driving to work or long drives.

Now, I saw you said you wanted more of an "Analog" Jeep, so why only go back to a TJ? I have seen several TJs selling in the low $20K- high teens. For that price I will just buy new or if I wanted something not so electronic (like I grew up with) I would go back to a CJ. There are a lot of them out there, cost less than some TJs and are even more basic. Shoot if I could find a Scrambler that I could afford, I would switch in a heartbeat!

Not a bad idea, but a CJ as a DD is getting crazy. Not out of the question, but yah.

YJs are pretty basic too. Mines a 95 (the last year of production) and it still has the old school analog/rotary style odo

Also, if he's gonna be cartin around friends, gotta consider the back seats of CJs and early YJs don't have three point belts. And no CJs nor YJs have airbags

I think a nice TJ trumps a nice Jk in my book. I have been jonesing to get a TJ and build up. I have a 14 jkur but I look more at nice tj's than I do at nice JK's. I do a lot of driving so I would not want to give up the comfort of my jkur but sure would like built tj to hit the trails in.

sounds like the OP already had his mind made up before the topic was posted. I completely understand what you are saying regarding the 10A being "too nice" as I had a white 10A JKU also. It was $44k new and I added quite a bit to it (2.5" lift, 35s, etc.) and wound up selling it to a LEO in Ohio. This time around, still a JKU but a sport at a more reasonable $34k.

My one concern would be if this is to be your daily driver, you definitely want something "reliable" as well as fun. From the sound of it, your Dad must be handy with tools so I say "go" for it. You should do well on the sale of your 10A. Just make sure you sell it privately and not on a dang dealer trade. I listed my 10A on eBay and had numerous bids and a buy-it-now.
