That should be easy. What do you want to do with your jeep?

You want a great on road Jeep get a Grand Cherokee
You want a great off road Jeep get a Wrangler

It really is that simple. They are both great Jeeps for what you want it for.

The new Grand can do quite well offroad if properly equipped. I think it's the Overland that has the air suspension. The 4WD system is much more advanced than the Wrangler, but not as brute-force tough. IFS vs. solid axle, this has been discussed ad nauseum. The Wrangler is clearly king here. But truthfully, most of us would be happy with the 4wd capabilities of a properly equipped Cherokee and it would suit most, if not all of our needs. YMMV.

For me, the decision came to this - it is way too hard to take the doors off of a Cherokee. I like the open feel of the Wrangler, and I love its heritage and quirks. And it is easier to lift, and has a ton of after-market support when the bug bites...

It can do alright off road but it's no Wrangler. A Wrangler can drive on road too.

But have to say, at the Bantam even were there was all types of Jeeps the group on the modified trail that I went with had a new Grand Cherokee, 2 Rubi's and several CJ's and my Sport. There was only one that had to be recovered twice on the trail and that was the Cherokee. It was a rough trail though and was surprised at how well it did. Have to say, when mine was in the body shop after the hail storm, the rental company gave me a 2011 Cherokee and it was very nice ride but wouldn't take it on many trails I take my wrangler on.

I wanted to buy 2012 Ruby, whent for test ride in 2011 ruby, then a test drive in Grand Cherokee. Ordered new 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 with off road package.
Just befor my new Grand Cherokee arrived at dealer, I saw all white 2012 Wrangler Rubicon at a nearby Jeep Dealer's internet site. I called the dealer I ordered the Grand Cherokee from, he said he could get that Jeep for me.

Now have Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and I love it. Used TL discount for good price. Love new engine power, the 2012 3.73 gears are lower than the old jeep with 4.10 with 5 speed auto. I have the 4.10 rear end, I should be able to run 70 mph all day, but if I never plan to go to larger tires, I would order 3.73 rear end.

You do realize that lower (numerically higher) gears are more desirable for larger tires? I ordered my Rubi with 4.10 gears in anticipation of future lifts. If I thought I would leave the thing alone, I might have considered 3.73.

The lower the gears, the greater the torque multiplication to the rear wheels, and this can become a huge issue with large-diameter/heavy tires. You may have higher RPMs on the engine, but at least you won't get stopped in a headwind at 70mph the way my TJ Rubicon on 33s does...

As the owner of both vehicles you are considering...I say go with what you feel is best for you. Unfortunately, I don't off road much so really either vehicle is great for my personal use but yours may be different. Will say either vehicle is fantastic in it's own way..you cannot go wrong.
