--All the JKs with tow pkg have a xmission cooler, but

It's not effecient enough for extended load-hills, sand, off-road heat -etc

So I'm assuming since my wrangler didn't come with a tow package I don't have a tranny cooler. I do plan on buying a tow package sometime. What kind of tranny cooler is the best one. Also what kind of damage would I do hauling something without a tranny cooler?

Jimbox is right on. My JK is an 07 tow package, and the cooler is dinky. I've been monitoring temps with a controller, and NORMAL operating temperature of my automatic is 199-202 degrees. That's rediculously hot considering I'm not towing or in traffic or offroad at the time I measured. I should be 170-180 range.

I strongly advise you, or any JK owner with an automatic...to just shell out $50 and get yourself a REAL transmission cooler.

Don't "assume" that you are "coolerless"--pop the hood and look straight done from the right corner of the radiator, with the xmission cooler there are two steel lines that have 3/8" rubber hoses that bridge the gap between the engine and radiator (lower right), if they aren't there----NO COOLER

Go to "search" and look for "aux cooler" and you can find -just what you need !!

Good luck

Autos aren't like manuals that can be repaired. When you burn up an auto...it's ruined. 1700 bucks is what you pay for a new one. Rebuilding them sucks, and they never shift right again.

Heat kills them. 200 degrees, you just cut the fluid life in half. Every 10 degrees over that it get cut again. So if you hit 230 degrees your ATF fluid will only last 6,000 miles before you destroy the trans.

If you want one, google "trans cooler JK" as there are loads of options and prices.

I'll be installing one probably near the end of summer wheni do a trans flush.

Heh Heh,"search" will give you lotsa options

If you haven't received the Chrysler J30 TSB for ECM reflash--call your dealer service dept and they will set up an appointment to do the job-"free"--if you want

I didn't have mine done because I have an aux cooler and temperature monitoring gages for the tranny, the xmission fluid boils at 252° and can cause a BIG FIRE, so if I was you--make a decision

The dealer won't just put in Mopars aux cooler, unless you have xmission failure, then it costs some money, so

Hilldweller will tell you about the pros/cons of the J30 "reflash" results

Have a good weekend
