Angry Trans shifter cable popped off? Mechanic clueless...

So I noticed a screech/whine after starting up my 07 unlimited, screeched every 30 seconds or so for about 2 minutes while going 25mph then went quiet once I reached 45mph. Next day same thing happened when moving my car out of the garage. Did a few tests - sped up, hit breaks, reversed, hit breaks. When I reversed and hit the breaks the whine/screech happened again. Friend said it sounded like it was coming from the back - turned off the engine and he checked suspension.

Started up engine again, but I couldn't get it into any gear - had to get it towed while wheels were locked.

Mechanic doesn't know why the shifter cable "popped off" - said it may have something to do with my ebreak (which I never use).

Any ideas? Just had my water pump replaced by same mechanic 10 days ago.

Thanks

Pics? Are you talking about the bushing?
If so, I believe those are notorious for popping off. I just zip-tied mine this weekend as a preventative measure.
