Transfer Case Cable

Well my transfer case cable clip on the shifter side disintegrated today (09 JK). What a mammoth pain it was to fix a super simple item. If you haven't done one yet, it requires that you take the transfer case shifter knob off (lots of clips hidden), remove the council (the emergency brake handle will be a challenge). I couldn't get all of it off of the emergency brake so I just ended up bending the plastic of the council up to get at the shifter clip. It was disintegrated.

Chrysler did not have any in stock here and there weren't any in LA either. They will have one in a week. Regardless, I went to Autozone, got a package of brass bushings for a Ford accelerator of some kind and some e-clips. The bushing installed like a factory job and the clip snapped right on.

I don't understand why that wasn't how it was done at Jeep. Also, a little access door on the side of the council would be perfect to get at the shifter. I might cut one and use either a body plug or some other custom cover. It will beat the hell out of wrestling with the plastic and probably breaking something next time.

I looked at the receipt and it was not throttle linkage bushings. It was a set of Ford door hinge bushings.

I'm glad that I have seen your old post. I had mine disintegrate as well. I was near your neck of the woods (the area behind Niland). The weather was a cool 112 degrees and my transfer case was stuck in neutral. I had to rip out the console. Not a fun time in that heat. I'm glad you posted a more long lasting fix than the one Jeep had.

The bushing costs 60 cents. I keep three in the glove box.

Now you got me really interested. Would you have a pic of the results? The part number of what you used? I'd be really interested to order the same thing and be done with it, and I'm sure plenty of people will do the exact same thing.
