Transmission cooler

Hey guys got a question for ya on tranny coolers. I couldn't find any recent threads on this topic. Have any of you added one? Our '11 rubi got a little warm on the trail Saturday so we were thinking this would be a good option. Only happened once but we'd rather it not happen again.

Opinions and suggestions?

I added one to mine. It was one of the first mods I did. Not sure if I would have a heating problem but didn't care. Better safe then sorry IMO. I got a B&M 70264 Supercooler for automatic transmission off of E-bay but many get them off of Amazon too.

All four of our Jeeps, we added / installed extra auxiliary coolers. This isn't an optional thing in my opinion, it's a must do mod and should be a requirement.

Both of them are autos. I've got nerve damage in my leg so shifting is hard for me to do these days.

Conditions when his got hot were about 104 outside. We'd been creeping over moderate rock for about 2 hours, hit one of the hills rated at extreme that's about 1/2 mile long. Nice steady slow pace, no slippage surprisingly. His light came on just as he was cresting the top. I was right behind him but mine was fine.

@Pluke the 2:

I was checking under mine looking at the setup to figure out what and where to install for a cooler. Can you send a pic of your installs? I am looking at one from Summitt with an integrated cooling fan (looks like the CPU heat sink on your home PC).

However, it looks like there is already a factory cooler installed. The lines come out of the tranny into (or out of) what looks like a junction box & go to a remote unit, not the factory radiator, but no fan. It sits in front of the radiator. This is on the 2012 JK Sahara 4 dr. Was yours originally connected to the radiator?

Yea my 2012 has a cooler. So I'm assuming they come with em. Mine was one of those dealer lifted jobs though so for a sport I've got some differences between others and try not to assume mine is the standard.

Our rubicon is a 2011. It does not have a cooler. So I'm assuming that's the case for 2011 prior. My jk experience is a bit more limited than tj. So when it comes to this sort of discussion I'm hesitant bc some stuff I'm just not sure about.

yup...my '12 JKUR has a tranny cooler mounted right in front of the radiator...you can see the lines running to/from it through the last grill space on the passenger side.

Stick with the B&M part number listed above. I have it on my 2011. They make quality stuff and will stand behind it since Jeep won't. My fluid has never gone above 175 since I installed mine.

This is my first automatic, 08 jkr haven't had it that long, and so am not really familiar with this. Is a cooler something I could install myself? I've always had manuals. It hasn't overheated or anything, but I would rather not take the risk

I am looking to purchase a B & M Trans cooler. there are 3 to choose from, mdl. # 70264, 70266 & 70268. I have a JK 2008, pulling a 2,000 Lbs. pop-up camp trailer. Recommendations as to which one would serve my jeep best?

I have 2013 with 1500 miles and toward the end of the day (first day on the trail ever for this rig) i shifted down from 4h to 4L and you would have thought i was caught in neutral. my check engine light came on and no engagement from trani or transfer case. opened the hood and ate an apple had a water 20 minutes or so, started it back up and no worries drove out and home.

thoughts, next stop the parts house for a trani cooler, then i was washing it and saw a trani cooler in the grill......next stop old bronco to tear off my big auxiliary fan.

I have read and talk to a number of peeps in the last few days having the same issue with there 13's, one guy was behind me on the trail and said the same had happened to him.

I run 35's and this trail was not that hard, and it was not that hot Big Bear CA labor day 2013

I don't think you ate suppose to shift directly into 4L from 4H. The jeep should be shifted into Neutral for a second while the Jeep is still moving around 2 to 3 miles per hour then engage the 4L. That is a very low gear ratio to shift down into. The same for shifting into 4H a slight pause in Neutral then shift up. You probably hear some grinding if your putting a load on the Transmission. I dont think you need to upgrade your cooler

Also the Transmission should be in Neutral for the shift from H to L and vice versa, search Jeep command Trac video on you tube

I installed 70268. Fits perfectly and never had an issue. 70268 = 13,000 BTU. 70264 = 14,400 BTU. Either one is about triple what you'll ever need.
