Tread Lightly Discount - USE IT!

I ordered a 2011 4 Door Rubicon Unlimited with every possible option except the smokers group and engine block heater a few weeks ago...Called around to local dealers and got one to print up a quote of $37,200 for it "out the door", not bad hence I ordered it. Then I got a tread lightly control number for the discount and it knocked a further $749 off the price ($36,451 total now on an MSRP of $40,120).

And it's on the railcar on the way here now

...CAN'T WAIT!

Can't beat a $749 savings for a $25 membership fee.

I didn't think about the change pocket, but I suppose the dash bin would work

Instead of the Rubi model you should have gone with the Sport and ordered a pair of Dana 60s from Currie or Dynatrac, then sell the factory unit for some more dash change. You would be about the same price and had the HD axles for future upgrades in place.

Congratulations on the order and discount. TL is a good thing.

Did you have to pay the $75.00 doc fee? Dealers don't worry about the Tread Lightly discount. Chrylser gives them that discount back, plus another 1%... so everyone is happy.

When we did our Tread Lightly purchase, I noticed that the 1% below invoice amount was off by $75 (reduced). Not realizing why at first, when I question the Dealer about it, he explained that was how they covered the TL fee. So in our case, the $75.00 never really appeared as an actual fee on our sales slip because it was already taken from the overall TL discount that they allowed us.

I also ordered the same jeep to the penny. Just sent off for the tread lightly control number. Mine is schuduled to be on the lot on the 9th. Hope I get my control number. I would hate to wait a few days for it after the jeep is here but I will. That's enough savings to put towards a mod. Thanks for the info.

If you email Tread Lightly and explain your situation, they can usually also send you your member letter by email (as a pdf attachment) - My son just did this, and received everything necessary by email just a couple hours after he signed up - Tread Lightly is Great!

Mine is due in on the 8th :-)

I did the tread lightly thing about 5-6 days ago and received the packet yesterday. Took about 2 minutes online to get the control number.

You know what REALLY sucks though? I ordered the jeep while our house was on the market for sale (been on the market for a while), figuring we're heading into fall, not likely to get the home sold in fall/winter so go ahead and get the jeep...well, home sold and now we're buying another so I CAN'T buy the jeep right when it comes in, I have to have them hold it for about a month until we close on the home (can't have the new car payment hit while we're in escrow waiting on lending)...GRRRRR...The jeep will be sitting on a lot just a few miles from me for at least a MONTH!

...Oh well, I suppose I'll have it in time for the snow

Ok so here is the tread lightly dicount total. After a 75 dollar admin fee and a 25 dollar membership fee the one percent dicount ended up being a 278 dollar discount. Not that much but it adds up!

For me, not sure how, but it ended up being $749 per the dealer (minus the $25 membership fee).

Wait.. the TL savings should be more than you think, because as a first step, your Tread Lightly discount should bring your original MSRP down to get you the "Dealer's Invoice Price" - then on top of getting you that lower amount, you then saved the additional $278 (which would be the 1% below the Invoice amount, minus those TL fees that you spoke of).

So, your real total Tread Lightly discount should have probably been more like a savings somewhere around $1300 off the original MSRP (in our case, we had a MSRP of $27690 but only paid $26300 using Tread Lightly).

Correct for the most part, on mine I negotiated it down from MSRP of $40,120 to $37,200 then they applied the tread lightly discount which brought it to $36,451...I know the tread lightly discount is suppose to be 1% below invoice, but seems to somehow be more than that as 1% for me should have been $372 MAX, but ended up being $749...Im not going to argue with that!

The TL discount also waives the Dealer Fee. My Dealer Fee was originally $700, but it varies by dealer. That may be where the extra savings came in.

Jeff... Wondering if the "Dealer's Fee" that you mentioned is a something that's a local, regional, or state thing, because I can't say that I ever remember seeing that kind of fee being added in our area.

Are you saying (leaving out Tread Lightly or any other kind of discount) if I went into your local Dealership, walked up to a vehicle and said to the Dealer, "I'll take it!" (at full MSRP sticker price), that my final bill of sale would be the full MSRP + Sales Tax + Tags & Title + an additional $700 Dealer's Fee?

The Tread Lightly discount is NOT a "Tread Lightly" discount... What being a member of Tread Lightly allows you is to take part in the Chrysler Affilate Rewards program. This is an option that allows you to get the Preferred Price that is 1% below factory invoice. This is a good program, IF you can take part in it.

I told my dealer about it yesterday. He didn't have a clue what I was talking about... and after a call to his Jeep Rep... he lowered his trade in value he was going to give me for my 2004 GC from $7200 down to $5900! He and I agreed on the $7200 when he ordered my 2011, and now I bring up "Tread Lightly" and the Chrysler Affilate Rewards program he wants to change what he gives me for my trade. He also asked what I owed on my 2004 CG and I told him NOTHING, I have the title.

$5,900 is high Kelly Blue Book value for my trade for it's milage and condition and I am glad to get it and anything above that. But where I live I know they'll will get at least $10,500 for it. They don't stay on the lots up here, and with snow only a few weeks away someone is gonna snatch it up quickly. I know that he is going to make money on the 2011 he wants me to buy and my trade.

He gave me a quote of $30,515.00 for my 2011 on order (2011 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon MSRP $37,725 http://www.jeep.com/hostc/getWindowS...HA6H18BL521883) and told me yesterday it wouldn't be more than that (still have to pay taxes and tags). I am going to wait until it comes in to see IF I should take the $7200 off MSRP or take $5900 for my trade plus the "Tread Lightly" and the Chrysler Affilate Rewards program discount. It dosn't really matter because I can walk away, my GC is costing me NOTHING. Still haven't seen an honest salesman!

So what do you guys think, am I dealing with an idiot?

Yes. Whatever they may call it, the Dealer Fee (or Dealer Prep or whatever, they call it different things) is what most of them try to charge for the little bit of work they do removing window film, "documentation", etc. It's basically just hidden profit. The numbers I've seen vary a lot, and if you spend a little time negotiating you should be able to get rid of it anyway, but if you give them the TL code, it just goes away without a fuss.

Yes.
Chrysler reimburses the dealers the money they "lose" on the sale, so by giving you less for your trade, he's making out even more. The Chrysler Preferred Pricing is NOT an option for dealers, they have to honor it if they are licensed to sell Chrysler vehicles. If he quoted you $7200 for the trade, then I wouldn't settle for anything less. You should be paying the 1% below factory invoice TL price minus full trade in. I would walk away and find a competent dealer.

Actually A jeep dealer is an independently owned franchise, thus they do not have to honor any of the programs, It is really up to the dealer.

That being said, any dealer that doesn't honor it is just plain dumb. It's an easy no hassle price and it makes for a no games transaction for the consumeThus a happier customer. For me it's a win win everytime.

If you have any questions you can see my post in the vendor section.

And yes if they quoted you the 7200 get the 7200 or move on to another dealer. You would think in this day and age dealers would realize that consumers go online to different sites and forums and know exactly how the TL discount and others like that work.

TL is 1% of invoice under invoice. Dealer gets back 2%.

Ok, if the dealer doesn't want a nasty call from Chrysler Corporate about the Preferred Pricing customer they snubbed. It is a Chrysler Corporate program, right?

It a corporate program however it is the dealers discretion on whether or not to accept it and honor it. Like I said, it's stupid not to honor it. But I like everyone to know the truth. That way when they go in to a dealer, they know it solely up to the dealer. If a dealer won't honor it, go elsewhere someone will.

Believe me I think the TL membership is well worth the $$$ plus the cause. It's all about karma, and doing the right thing. Again, I own a JK and I sell them. I see a lot of threads about dealers being crappy, lying, etc. I just want to help anyone I can by answering questions and letting them know the truth.

It's probably true in your case, that the Dealer gave you an inflated trade-in value for your GC.. but if you are seeing that $5900 is a high KBB amount, then chances are that you probably won't be able to do too much better than that even if you do start the whole process over again with another Dealer.

One of the nice things about using Tread Lightly right up front, is that it establishes exactly how much you are going to need to pay for your new vehicle. After that, you should be able to really see the "true" dollar amount that you will be offered for any trade that you might have. In the end, you could go to ten different Dealers, with each of them offering minor differences in your trade allowance.. in which case, you have to just say to yourself, is it, or is it not, worth the hassle.
