Trektop NX - Best $15 mod I ever spent

Well, took my window out of the Trektop NX the other day and had no plans on putting them back in this summer. Keeping a Duster in Jeep for just in case rain.

Saying that I was driving down the highway this morning and every time I got over 50 mph the back flap was vibrating so bad, I couldn't even hear the radio. It was ridiculously loud. I tried tightening it up and it helped little but was still no way I could drive on the highway for long with it flapping in the wind like it did.

Got to thinking about how to fix the problem. I was testing bungees with little help and noticed the aluminum bar was just too flexible and no matter how tight I got the ends the middle would still wobble.

So it dawned on me. Galvanize water pipe. I went to Lowes and bought a 4 foot piece of 1/2" Galvanized pipe with two end caps for a total of $15 and change with tax. I changed it out in the parking lot. Pulled out the aluminum bar and screwed one end cap on the galvanized pipe and slid it through the top and put on the other end cap. Tightened it back down and hit the highway.

Got up to 75 mph and not even a flicker. Pulled over and opened the Sunrider and re-tightened the rear straps and hit the highway again. Again not even a flicker. It ran perfect open or closed. You need the end caps to make the bar long enough to fit perfect. The original bar is 50". The 48" pipe plus two end caps are 49" but is enough to work.

Love this mod

By the way, I pushed up that end so to take the picture. The top actually lays over the pipe just fine. This is the heavy water pipe not conduit.

Here is a photo with the flap pulled over the pipe. You can't see it. It actually seats better between the roll bar. the old aluminum bar would try to slip sideways when flapping and not pulled so tight you thought it would pull the threads out.

Very cool. I love Jeep mods that utilize some form of construction material.

I like the Lowes mods too. My grill screen is a piece of concrete mesh that I bought for $7. Getting ready to hit them up again to build a rear box to put in my recovery kit.

Because I'm too lazy to walk down two flights of stairs right now...

Is my JKU bar going to be the same width as your JK bar?

Going to try this; thanks.

Not sure on that one but would think it is the same. Even if it isn't Lowes will cut a longer piece for free (Buy a 6' piece for $3 extra dollars) and thread it for you. I assume Home Depot is the same but Lowes is closer to my house.

He even told me there if the 4" didn't fit just bring it right back in and he would cut the piece for me right away. I told him that I wasn't using it for water but something else and he said he sells more pieces for something else then water pipe lol

Lol...I'm making similar plans. I've got a Tuffy enclosure in the back, and am currently trying to configure some hooks along the interior so I can strap down compressor and recovery gear. A visit to Lowe's will definitely play a part.

Love that place.

I drove all day today with the Sunrider open. This mod is awesome. No vibrating at all. I did however remember to close the Sunrider before going into the Store with my daughter. not sure why I did other then thinking that dark cloud was getting close. While in the store a huge storm hit. Have to say I did get a little wet. The rain was too hard for my duster to hold and some water made it in through the back at the seats. I need to find something to keep it higher in the back them it is now. Something that will bow out a little

Great call, I got mine at True Value for $15 also, all they had was black which was great. I also took a wrap of the strap around the end of the pipe and moved the J-Hook to the side. Any good ideas for the hooks in the sound bar holes? What a terrible design, in any kind of side wind mine rattles around. Oh and I wanted to mention (To replace your hard top bolts with hand bolts) I bought star handled Thule bolts for my hard top. They are for Thule rook racks, paid like $2 each for them (standard hardtop retainers are M8). They are a little long, I stuck a couple of nuts on them and now I have a place for bungee tie-off.

I cut the bottom part of J hooks off mine altogether and used a wracheted tie-down camo strap from the TrekTop-installed top part of that strap to one of the Jeep hooks on the floor in the back. Holds it really nice and tight.

rics - maybe I'm stupid, but I don't get how your pipe is secured in there? And then how the back of the top is secured to the pipe.. Did you sew some straps to it?

I have a trektop NX on a JKU.. maybe the setup is different in the back for the JK vs JKU?

I believe there is something different going on there, my guess is the bar is secured different to the sport bar than on the 4dr version. Mine is in there super tight with no wobble/flapping, not even sure if I can remove it hah!

Yea, it only works on the 2dr Trektop NX. The 4dr NX doesn't have the sleeve for the bar

My four door trek top nx has the sleeves at the back for the bar but it also has J loops that hold it tight with no movement or vibration.

Mine too. And while the bar itself does not move or vibrate, the top flaps like all hell in bikini mode on the highway if I have the windows down. Even worse with sunrider flipped back.

It flaps so much so that I can see the rear "bow" flattening out over and over again as the Flappytop NX pushes it down. It's rather annoying. I'd love to figure out how to make this mod (or something like it) work on a 4 door and look clean (i.e. no ratchet straps or bungees or crap like that).

You guys both have 4 doors?

And this is with the glass windows down (all 4 of them)?

How about with the sunrider flipped back?

I have even tried the second set of spring holes and it doesn't seem to help. Granted this is mostly in windy conditions like around the coast, but mine definitely flaps at anything over 55MPH. And the thing is so simple I can't imagine that it's installed incorrectly.

Yeah my main flappage occurs in the back section over the rear seats. I need to figure out a way to fab up some circular retainers for the pipe instead of the J hooks that Bestop provides, or something.

I even have the pipe already, just no way to attach it without totally ghetto rigging it.
