Tubular Side Steps vs Rock Rails / Nerf bars

I have a few questions for those more knowledgeable.

1. Are the tubular side steps that come stock on the '12 Sahara a liability if you are mainly running trails?

2. Should I be worried about damaging them and then they damage something else?

3. If I am mainly running trails, crossing some water, and getting a bit muddy, do I need rock rails/nerf bars?

4. What do rock rails/nerf bars protect?

5. Do rock rails/nerf bars lower you clearance?

Thanks in advance.

To answer your questions:

1. Are the tubular side steps that come stock on the '12 Sahara a liability if you are mainly running trails? Yes, they are nothing but plastic...

2. Should I be worried about damaging them and then they damage something else? Yes, they can hit your rocker panels and bend them, I know this.

3. If I am mainly running trails, crossing some water, and getting a bit muddy, do I need rock rails/nerf bars? If you know there is nothing that can hit and damage you rocker panels.

4. What do rock rails/nerf bars protect? The Rocker panel and you don't want nerf bars they bend.

5. Do rock rails/nerf bars lower you clearance? No

Thanks for the info, now to sound like a complete idiot, what are the rocker panels? Is this the body material below the doors?

Yes that is it. There is a TON of different rock rails or sliders to choose from on the market today. The one of the most popular here on WF are the ones from ACE Engineering. They are very stout and at a heck of a price point!

ACE Engineering

Let us know if we can help you pick out a set!

I made the mistake of wheeling with the factory chrome tube steps. Obviously, the tubes themselves got smashes to hell, which isnt too big of a deal. But my pinch seam also got twisted and mangled. I had to get some rock rails to cover it up, as well as getting some real rock sliders. I recommend the ace rock sliders, and you'll be hard pressed to get them to your door any cheaper then krawl offroad.
