Tuffy Tailgate Security Enclosure

Purchased the Tuffy Tailgate Security Enclosure Model 299-01. I could not be happier. I hem and hawed for weeks on what to get for topless security. I wanted something that looked good and would not interfere with taking the top on and off. I love that it sits just below the back rails. I had serious concerns about the enclosures that sat over the rails. It looks real good with the rest of my accessories. Now I have peace of mind when I'm out and about.

I had one for a short time. Liked I but I must have installed something wrong as it scratched the hell out of my soft top bow when I dropped the top.

In the end ending up not being suitable for me as I have a lot of larger items in the back sometimes and got tired of putting it in and taking it out.

Still, a nice product. Love me some Tuffy.

With hard top on I think it makes it sound better.

Like others with top off can't hear it much either way.

I like that lid but can't seem to find it on tuffy's web-sight is it similar to the 275. And does it interfere with the jack cubby.

Its kind of like the step down from the 275. It does not interfere with the jack cubby at all.

Here is the link. I hope it works.

So explain something to me.

What prevents a thief from just simply opening the tailgate?

Um that's great and all.

But what about those of us who don't have those fancy electric doo dads?

I don't think there is a manual lock back there.

There is only one way to open it, the key, if you lock it. You need the key to lock it from the outside and to unlock it - so if you lock it (and don't leave the key in the lock) they can't get in.

The alarm disable feature just puts the trunk and door locks into the same mode for those with power locks, you need the key fob or the key to open.

Edit, there is a lock cylinder right next to the handle on the rear swing gate on both power lock and manual lock jeeps

So if you don't have fancy schmancy power locks can't you just stick the key in the lock and manually lock it....the old fashioned way?

It looks good and appears to be very solid and functional. Have you take the hard top on and put it back on yet with the Tuffy installed? The reason I ask is another forum mentioned it was a pain due to having to remove some bracket.

The 299 model doesn't have brackets that sit on the top of the tub. U can remove the top just like normal. It's the reason I got this one. And the best part is it fits under the cargo top I put on.

I bought the multi top from off road heros. The cargo top is like the duster that bestop sells. It goes over the cargo area and makes it look like a truck.

Getting ready to buy the 275 for my JK2D
JK Security Deck Enclosure Jeep Wrangler, JK 2011+

I have a question about the top surface. I am sure that if left bare it is going to scratch up pretty badly over time. At the same time $55 for a piece of plastic seems over the top, any suggestions for cheaper options? I am going to hit a couple of stores tomorrow. Interestingly, I can't find it on Tuffy's own web site, here it is from elsewhere
Tuffy 864 - Diamond Plate Vinyl Mat for Part #275 (864-01-275)

Last but not least, what is people's experience with the 158 tie down rails
Tuffy Multi-Point Tie Down Rails
They are listed as 27 1/4" long, the 275 is only 25" long on the top lid, so these don't fit. Maybe drill a few holes and add eye hooks for some cargo netting?

I bought a rubber door mat at Lowe's for about $20 and cut it to fit, works great
