Has anyone been to Turner Falls in OK? I'm heading down that way with the family for the Crawl for Christ event and wanted to see if it was worth the extra 3-4 hour drive to Turner Falls afterwards for camping, swimming and maybe some trails (if they exist).

My wife and I were there a couple weeks ago. It's very beautiful, but very crowded. Especially this time of year you'll be hard pressed to find a place to park much less camp. It's fine for a day trip but I wouldn't stay overnight. Just my opinion though. It's beautiful to hike through if you've never been.

Turner Falls itself charges to get in, last time we took the kids I spent about $30 on the 4 of us, but that was a good ten years ago now. Wow - cost is up - https://www.showclix.com/event/turnerfallssummer2226185 ($12 adults, $6 kids)

If you go on the weekend expect a lot of people, some good, some bad - as in, garbage not picked up, rude, noisy, etc. The water in summer is pretty warm, which is nice for the kids, though we grew up in cold water up north and both kids had enough after 3 hours and asked to go to Little Niagara instead.

That trip was the last trip we ever made to TF, the kids preferred the cold springs of Little Niagara and we have gone there since (it's also free). The campsites around Little Niagara are much nicer too, so if you want to spend some time in the area and go to both, just set up camp around Little Niagara area. The exit for Little Niagara is 55, it's exit 51 for Turner Falls - they are about 20 miles apart.

The 'waterfall' isn't very high at Little Niagara, TF is much nicer in that respect. You can jump off the top of waterfall at LN, the depth is about 12 feet underneath. The shallow end of the 'pool' at LN is about 4 feet deep. Above the falls is about 2 feet deep. All is cold, spring fed water. It's actually clear to the bottom if you go there first thing in the morning before everyone stirs it up swimming again.

If you go to Little Niagara you will cross a bridge over the creek, or rather through the creek. The bridge dips down and there's an average of 6 inches of water that flows over it that you drive through - which is very tempting for a splash shot especially if there are kids in the creek to splash. Somewhere I have a photo of the JKU doing it but I can't find that, so an older photo of the TJ (blurry as it is) will have to do. I used to love taking the TJ through fast enough the water would come over the top and get everyone inside the Jeep wet too like those log rides at the amusement parks...

If you take the trip over, you may also like the Chickasaw Cultural Center too. Lots of stuff to do, it took us an afternoon to get through it all.

Honestly though, if you're coming in for C4C and all, you will have a full trip there by itself. You may also want to bump Red Dirt Jeeps page on Facebook too, we often have people going to C4C and they'll have plenty more suggestions too. We aren't going this year or I'd stop and say hi to you.

Turner Falls is a great trip, but extremely popular and crowded during peak times. We have waited an hour just to get in the gate. There is some hiking, but I'm sorry that I don't know about off-road trails as I'm just getting started myself and never paid attention when I was there.
