Hi all,

Just read an article in The Wall Street Journal that the United Auto Workers has announced their intention to strike at Chrysler/Jeep. Those of you who don't already have the Jeeps you custom ordered may be in for a wait.

Though, while the salaries have been basically stagnant, they are enjoying rather nice bonuses. Bonuses directly linked to profits. So, they are sharing in any prosperity.

I guess no matter how large the bonuses, their salaries being stagnant probably irks them to no end.

I live a couple miles north of the FCA factories on Van **** in Sterling Hts., MI. My office window faces FCA HQ in Auburn Hills, MI. (Oh the damn construction on University sucks). There are two FCA vehicles in my driveway (2015 T&C and a 2015 JKU). We just sold our 2009 T&C with 194K miles on it and it was running great. To say I am a fan is an understatement. No, I don't work for FCA, I actually work for a Japanese company in another industry.

That said, FCA is already screaming to merge with another manufacturer. Sergio is a VERY strong leader and it seems the rank and file are about to make a big mistake. He is a pragmatic manager that will make logical decisions. He seems to be able to manage the press better than the average "car guy" here in Detroit. I fear that while he has expressed his desire to keep manufacturing in NA, he may leverage this strike to lower costs in order to save the company.

The rank and file also need to be pragmatic. They need to take the bonuses while the times are good. Let the company grow/survive and push for more $ next time.

I am not saying the $ isn't deserved. I am just suggesting a different approach is better than a strike.

Cheers.

I support.

$15 entry wage... then onto $28 to $30 per hour isn't a bad wage for unskilled labor.. we're talking assembly work. They should take the bird in the hand and watch the bonuses roll in on the JEEP platform.

Unions worried about the strike fund?? Isn't that why the members pay outrageous union dues?? Wait never mind, hat cuts into the money to buy off politicians.

One thing I kept reading up on was them getting rid of the 2 tier wage system. I hope they can. I work in a union and under a system like that. Pisses me off being held to a higher standard and knowing a lot more then the higher paid guys and I don't get shit.

Just hope they don't shoot themselves in the foot because it's not that hard to send jobs overseas anymore.

The union where I work used to try and pull the strike card all the time. Company finally opened up another plant about 45 minutes away, different union local but same machines so if we striked they'd just shift the work to the other plant. They also have facilities in Mexico and China. It's very simple for them to shift work around if one of the unions starts giving them a hard time.

The just agreed to TPP language changes content rules as well as changes what the definition of 'content' is (the EU's TIPP is pretty much going down the same road).

Sure hope the UAW leadership has really made themselves familiar with the new world order, because you know for sure Sergio has those changes factored into his FCA plans.

This just two weeks after FCA makes makes the announcement that they are keeping the plants in the states and increasing production in some facilities.

Not that all of this maneuvering hasn't been in the works for a while, but it sure seems like a slap in the face to the parent company who acknowledges that while they could make a heck of a lot more money by moving production....they chose not to.

Lesson learned.

And we wonder why....

(sigh)
