Under hood mat

Just noticed my '15 Sport doesn't have a (heat) mat attached to the underside of the hood. My '14 Rubicon did. Does anyone know which have it and which do not?

It is only included with the Rubicon and Sahara.

I second that.

I also believe it's for sound reduction, not heat.

Thanks, Lammy. You're right, Bill. I just noticed the part name. Doesn't seem expensive. Like $55. I guess local dealer is best bet because shipping would be a lot for it, being oversized.

It's great at getting dirty when you ford deep water.

Good question. There's two on Mopar's parts catalog. I'll need to stop by local dealer and give the parts person VIN from my old Jeep ('14 Rubicon) to obtain the correct part number. I'll let you know.

Does it help keep the hood from flapping?? Or is it to filter the air coming out from under the flapping hood?
Funny thing I just noticed mine did not have one a couple days ago then I wondered why it would need one. Now this post.

I believe it's just a sound baffle, to keep engine noise out of the passenger compartment.

I can't help with the alien overlord issue ...maybe a little bit too much ?

Synchronicity, or something like that...

It's insulation, more or less, so it serves a few purposes.

1. It deadens sound produced by the engine.
2. It can smother an engine fire (not extinguish).
3. It can preserve the exterior finish of your paint

To elaborate #3, the insulation reduces the temperature of the hood (obviously, by insulating it from heat) and thus decreases the overall magnitude of expansion of the metal. Metal expands with an increase in temperature. A hood is going to expand more than a hood that is not as hot.

This reduces the overall expansion of the paint itself (paint is bonded to the surface of the metal). This reduction in the overall magnitude (or degree) of heat cycling will preserve the paint finish for a longer time compared to a hood without the mat.

With my manual I want more noise... I learned to drive a stick off the sounds and vibration of a 1975 Scout II with a 304 in it. This thing is too smooth.

Yeah, I got it from dealer today for $113.00 plus tax, plus 5 plastic retainers for $3.60 a pop.

Also the insulator reduces heat from the engine on the hood surface - If you live in an area that is prone to acid rain (large metro area) the hood is more prone to etching (without the insulator) due to the engine heat being radiated up. I added one to my 2014 Sport.

If you bought another Rubicon you could have saved at least $130.00.

I don't understand the point. You can barely hear the engine around town unless you gun it. On the highway, the wind noise far exceeds any engine noise. I think it was just another thing they added to the option list to differentiate between the Sahara/Rubicon and the Sport.

I don't understand the point either. I have been tearing them off all my vehicles for the last 15 or so years as all they seem to do is collect dirt and grime. I have not seen the paint on my hood fade as a result but to each their own. The one on the Jeep went into the garbage after about 6 months or so when it started to look crappy. It is far easier the clean the underside of the hood.

I have a 2013 JKU Freedom Edition and it does not have the under hood insulation and I never notice any engine noise. I would not waste my money on the insulation personally.

When I get my Rubicon in, I'm removing it and storing it in the garage till I sell it. They look like crap after 10,000 miles.
