Unlimited or not - need advice

Leaning towards Unlimited but trying to clearly understand the pros and cons.

Unlimited:
- much easier access to the rear seats, much bigger cargo area, longer hard top which may be better for carrying a longer, 17' canoe, better stability on at high speeds due to longer wheel base, more towing capacity

Regular wheel base:
- better off road capability due to shorter wheel base, better mileage due to lighter weight (????), better acceleration due to lighter weight (????)

Long wheelbase also doesn't look as 'cool' as the short wheel base one, but I am trying to stay more objective

Anything has anything to add or correct - please and thank you!

The 2 door wrangler is amazing. It does have better off road capabilities than the 4 door model due to its shorter wheel base. It can clear obstacles with ease and has been doing so for 50 years from its design. Wranglers are best at 2 doors BUT....4 doors are no joke either. You will have much more room and it would be easier to carry more cargo. Not sure the canoe thing would really matter as you can strap one down to a 2 door model no problem. As far as weight and MPG, they are about the same which is usually a surprise to most. Most say that they get virtually the same MPG regardless of the higher weight but that's never sounded right to me. More weight and more vehicle = more rolling resistance and fuel used to move. Its the same engine in both models with no difference for the 2 door model vs the 4.

If you can live with the things you'll have to deal with by owning a 2 door version, you'll have the Wrangler model that has been around and loved for over 5 decades. I love mine and yes I'm biased.

I've driven an Unlimited on roadways, highways and interstate and they are slower than the two door on acceleration. So if you do a lot of merging and passing you will notice the difference. I'll be it the 2 door isn't a race horse and I'm never in a hurry. It's whatever you need for your lifestyle.

I got my Unlimited in May and love the extra room. I traded a TJ for it. The ride is great and if you get the manual trans. you will not have a problem with acceleration, in my opinion. I know that I don't have a problem. I have a Rubicon with 4.10 gears and stock 32" tires. I also get between 18 and 21mpg depending on how I drive it.
I think that Unlimiteds look pretty cool. They look even better when lifted.

I would have gone for the Unlimited if I could have gotten past how much I dislike the B pillar when the top is down... Longer wheel base + better ride, easier access to the back seats, more storage... 2 doors look better to my eye, and well, my kids are just going to have to deal with it... Lack of storage is what it is, I just shop alone now, rather than with the family.

Had a 06 TJ. Love having more room in my 08 Rubi Unlimited. Never had a problem going places that a 2 door could go.

It's a difficult choice, No completely one sided "Right" answer. However if you have plans of doing long distance overlanding then hands down JK UL is the best choice due to cargo hauling capacity. Yet the 2 door with a 2-3" lift and 35s looks super aggressive.
I will agree with "imagolfspaz", no problem going where the 2 door guys go. In some cases the longer wheelbase will help.

I got an Unlimited last month and have zero regrets on that front. I had a CJ-7 years ago and while I loved it, I hated the lack of cargo space. For years I drove Cherokees because I needed the space but still wanted a capable vehicle. When they discontinued the Cherokee I bought a Land Rover.

Of course then they came out with the 4 door Wrangler ...

I also like the fact that the Unlimited has a higher towing capacity ... they don't mention that much in the marketing, but I think it's a major selling point.

I asked the same question 8 months ago shopping for my 1st jeep. I went with 2 dr, and let me tell you, I have to remove the back seat and completely fill the back to fit all my camping equipment. You WILL be limited on space with a 2 door. I make it work though and I pack a 6 person tent, cooler, generator, 5 gal gas can, heater, lights, vhs TV, sleeping bags, cot, air matress, tarps, fishing gear, etc, and I can get ANYWHERE with that short wheel base. Just harder work fitting everything in the back. Ohh and it does accelerate FAST, it's a manual though.

I recently traded my unlimited 07 for a sport 2010. the only reason i had the unlimited was because of my daughter, she was born in 2007, so I sold my wrangler X and got the unlimited. It is much easier to access a child safety seat with the 4 door. But now, at 3, she can climb in the seat herself. So I traded my unlimited for a new 2010 sport. I would always choose the 2 dr over the 4 dr, as a matter of preference. there was absolutely nothing wrong with the unlimited, I loved it.

Have you Test-Driven both to get the feel of them? Both are more than capable of off-roading, yet, the Unlimited would handle better on the Hwy. I've got a 2-Dr and LOVE IT! As for the back seat on mine..... no problems sitting on it..... it's on my Garage Floor!

Best of Luck, and let us know which one you get!

Cheers!

When I initially started oogling on a jeep, my children were young and I couldn't bring myself to get one because I thought that my choice would be "selfish" so I gave up the thought and went with station wagons and, gulp, a caravan. My children are now older and when the four door came out my wife gave me the green light. My main reason for going with the four door was the towing capacity of 3500 lbs. Everything else was secondary to that. Now that I have it, I love every part of it. I wish they had this before I bought the Caravan in 2000.

I sold my '05 TJ (which I loved) for my 4 door JK. I have no regrets whatsoever. It won't fit on some of the trails that my TJ did. I don't think the new 2 door JK would either, actually. It is a damn beast off-road, though. The longer wheelbase makes it more polite on-road. The extra cargo space is great. My kids are a breeze now to get in and out. And, most importantly, it looks freakin' sweet lifted with 35's!

Yes, we testdrove a 2dr, and rented a 4dr for a weekend. I like the looks of a 2dr much better, but I can hardly imagine how the 3 of us are going to fit into it with the camping gear and all and make a 32 hour trip to Utah. The 4dr is a different story though, especially if they are really going to make the 2011 models quieter.

Thanks everyone!

^^ Quieter? I thought the JK was already WAY quieter than previous models! They are going to improve on that? WOW!

Not sure if anyone said this, but I believe the new unlimited 4dr models have 5 seats Vs 4. Which could be a main factor when making your choice if you have kids or travel with a few people often. And it is SO much easier when I have to shove car seat in the back for my niece. :P

Yes, that's actually one of the main focuses on the '11, along with all the other interior changes. A BIG reason I'm thinking about choosing an '11 over the '10.

I love my Unlimited, All the benefits, fun and off road capabilities, but with more room for passengers and cargo.
And the Unlimiteds longer wheelbase actually makes it a little more capable off road...climbs alot better. Exact reason why hardcore wheelers spend so much money to stretch a wheelbase on a Wrangler.

I don't like the JKU doorless ... and topless ... well ... not so nice looking.
Other than that, i guess is better than 2dr if you need space as the offroad capabilities are most of the time the same...

But ... if you don't need the space, 2dr all the way

whoa, whoa.... you just answered your own question, IMHO, if there were just 2 of you I'd say you have a choice, a decision to make, and eith way you'd be good, BUT if there are 3 of ya's the I think u gotta go 4door?!? I'm just getting outta a 3 year lease of a 4dr sahara and I'm buying a 4 dr Rubi.... I love these 4doors so I am a bit biased, but I've owned 2 other 2 door wranglers and love all years/models.... you will never regret the 4 door, you may and probably WILL regret a 2 door whenever you run out of space or are tired of climbing into the rear seat... the rear doors are a godsend to any Jeep Mom or Dad!!

4 Door.... do it!

sure it may be a tad more quiet and look a tad more polished but I'm about to scoop up 2010 instead of waiting anothe month or two for what amounts to a small change, not even an 'upgrade'..... now if a factory 5.7 Hemi was coming , I'd wait

I recently took a camping trip with my Fiancee my dad and me. We got all of our gear in the two door with a little creative packing. We ended up not setting up our tent and slept in the jeep. It was cramped but not to bad. We were also only packing for a two day trip.

camping for more than a weekend, more kids ever? kid gets older wants to bring friend, 4 door, always better to have more space and not need it than to not have more and need it.

If in doubt get the four door. Having unused capability is better than "I wished I'd gotten..."

i would imagine the shape (wind resistance) of a jeep has more to do with the gas mileage than the little bit of added weight the 4 door gains. probably why the mileage is similar between the two. you're pushing a brick with a high ride height through the air, it's going to suck some fuel doing it at speed.

The main advantage the 2dr has over the 4dr is

Off-road-very tight switchbacks and cliffs, longer wheelbase means larger turn radius, so the 4drs are harder to navigate, but

There are many other advantages in the 4dr as previously mentioned !!
