Question Unlimited Soft Top vs Hard Top/Freedom

Hey guys,

Looking at getting a new Jeep Unlimited, but had a few questions/concerns about the different tops. I would love a soft top, but have heard some bad things about them, especially with the 4-door models.

How hard are they to take on/off? Can one person do this in a "timely" fashion. I want a soft top, b/c that a huge reason why I want a jeep in teh first place is the freedom of taking off the top when I want.

Also, what is the freedom top exactly, and would it be a good alternative to teh soft top.

IMO If you have the money buy them both. Unless you don't see yourself ever living somewhere with a climate that would make you want to leave the hardtop on for a long period of time.

The soft top is a Jeep top. It does leak a tiny bit here and there. The hardtop is the same. If water is sitting in the channels and the jeep flexes the right way you may get a drop or two. Its never a downpour inside at all. My only problem with the soft top has been the rear windows and their lack of "hooking" into the front quarter of the panel. At high speeds they can be pulled out a little bit but I've only had that happen once.

I can put mine on from no doors or softtop guides to up and done in < 20mins in my garage (probably faster w/o having to navigate the doors around other cars etc). I can put up the top with doors and rails already installed in 5 minutes. Takes some getting used to but once you remember to do everything in the right order its easy.

All those times were doing it by myself.

With the hard top the two pieces that are over the driver and passenger's seats can be removed w/o removing the entire top. These were great during the switch from winter to spring in Oklahoma because we get some decent 65-70 degree days that pop up here and there between the 35-45 degree days for a month or so. Only takes a few minutes to take the two pieces off and on.

The soft top has a similar feature where the part over the driver and passenger can be folded back and secured. to provide the same open air. Although, if you've done that you may as well pull the whole thing down.

Imo it is not an alternative to a soft top because its more like an over sized sunroof than anything.

Bottom line if you can afford it get both. Just make sure to have a place to store the hard top... its a touch bigger than some people think. If you ever sell the jeep it can only help the resale value.
'08 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 6 Speed... bone stock.
