I'm sure that makes a bunch of people with 13's feel better. This as far as I know would have been the first I heard of a 13 ticking. The October build date means you have a or should have an AC head. If an AC head was ticking the sh*t would really hit the fan.

I hope its just an injector tick. Check the head if you can and see if it's an AB or an AC head. Either way I wouldn't worry about it until you get a CEL, odds are you're fine!

Yeah, tell me about it. I partly ditched my 2012 for the ticking noise.

Do I need a mirror to see this date stamp or do I take a picture or something? I get the feeling this stamp is located at a place which is hard to reach.

you can see the stamp if you put your eyes just above the fender line. it's dead center over the exhaust coming out of the head behind two white plastic clips for sensors. it's definitely easier to take a picture.

To make yourself feel better, pull off the engine cover while it's running and if the noise gets louder, you'll know it's the injectors . I can say with utmost certainty, you're hearing injectors

I am going to try this as well, thank you so much for being so helpful. There is a reason why I migrated to the forum

I'm no expert but I can confidently say that's the injector noise. Mine has it, a buddy with 2012 has it. The tick from what I read hear is much more intense and you would also hear it when windows are up.

Hi all,
I was reading the numerous posts here to get an idea what the noise I hear coming from the left side of the engine might be. The noise to me appears to be an exhaust leak. I was going to ask if anyone could recommend a good cat back exhaust system but now im thinking of driving it off a cliff. hahahhahahah...I have a 4.5" terra flex lift with the exhaust loop aroung the front cross member. I will start by addressing the exhaust to see if it helps with the noise.....anyone redo their exhaust system and have good results...thks

How do you decifer the build dates and head numbers again, like what dates are good (ac head)?

The date stamp is a Julian date. Anything greater than or equal to 2062 (206th day of 2012) is the AC head. There will be a fifth character after the date which can be alphanumeric. That may represent a production hour or something similar but it's not important.

Got back in town and picked mine up at the dealership today.

Good news, The drivers side was replaced with the AC head and purrs like a kitten. The Idle is much smoother now.

Bad news, now that the drivers side syphony of taps is gone it's very obvious there is a valve ticking on the passenger side. Tap,tap,tap.... Like a pencil tapping on a wooden desk.

I had asked/requested that they do both sides the first time since both were ticking. I'll press again after the holidays and get the passenger side head replaced.

I guess I'll get another "free" oil change in Janurary.

mine sounded the same on the passenger side after my driver's side was replaced. I doubt they will replace it unless it's really ticking loud.

Here's a video. The Drivers side side sounds great now. The passenger side, different story.

'12 Wrangler valve tapping. - YouTube
I think that's just the normal sound of the passenger side. I filmed this right after my head replacement. Sounds exactly like yours:

Dealer documented the tick on mine. You can hear it in the jeep with the windows up and hard top on and it's even worse with the doors off. Operating as normal.

The heads are mirror images of each other. They should make identical noises.

The exception would be the increased injector noise on the passenger side due to the lack of insulation covering them.

The video doesn't due justice to the tap on the passenger side, it's loud, clear, and audible from 40 feet away.

In theory they should. But the acoustics of the engine bay are vastly different on either side. There is a lot less room on the passenger side, which may amplify the sound towards the wheel well. Plus it doesn't have the loop in the exhaust and the infamous foam block. Many factors.

Not that i'm saying it's not ticking. I'm pretty sure we both have a slight tick on that side. I'm not that happy about it as I also have a relatively rough idle at times. Pretty sure it will need one before the warranty is up. if the heads were identical and have the same valve material design flaw, it's only a matter of time before it goes.

I mentioned it when I dropped the jeep off 2 weeks ago to have the trans torn apart, but got blank stares. Still don't have the jeep back, so I don't know if they looked into it...

I just got the oil changed on my 2012 the other day. I asked the service manager about the heads, and he said that they aren't identical on the l and r side. He said the pass side is made in Mexico, and the driver side is made in Canada. And that certain lots of the Canadian made heads are bad, and can be determined by lot number.

LMAO...Must be a South Park fan....Blame it on Canada. I don't think your service manager knows his ass from a hole in the ground.

Haha, who knows. It's just what some service tech said, after a scheduled oil change that took over an hour and a half, and got it back smelling like smoke. Don't think I'll be going back there.

Wish me luck guys and gals. Just dropped off my 2012 JKUR with 7900 miles on it for ticking. CEL came on last week while offroading with a P0304. Build date 4/12.

Dealer said they've seen a number of bad heads and that mine was not the only one currently in for repair. Said once STAR authorizes the repair, that parts should take 2 days to receive and another 1-2 days to preform the work.

Driving a lovely Dodge Grand Caravan in the mean time, courtesy of the dealer. Hope I won't be without my Jeep for very long.

good luck! since they have plenty of experience now, it should be a standard job. I've been in a town and country for 2 weeks now waiting on my jeep. it's hard to stay awake driving that thing.

Sounds like bull. The service rep at my dealer who seems like a pretty good guy, aknowledged the problem and has done a few said there is nothing in the system about what heads are affected. He took some time with me present looking through the computor, even checked my vin and could come up with nothing about lots or heads affected by vin. I dont think he would bs me. He should me the info that was coming up on his screen.

Update. Dealer called today and said that my issue is definitely a cylinder head issue (no shit). Only problem is that the replacement head is shipping from back east as the western warehouse is out of stock. Should be fixed early next week. Sooner, if the head were to arrive tomorrow.

Only issue I ran into was regarding my onboard air compressor. They need to remove it to do the work and wanted to charge me $160 to remove and reinstall it. I told them I'd be down tomorrow at lunch and will have it out in 5 minutes. Darn stealership!

Does the Caravan have the 3.6 pentastar? If so check to see if it is ticking on the driver's side. A 285 hp minivan should be somewhat fun to drive.

Would it be on the "driver's" side? Isn't the motor turned sideways on a front wheel drive van?
