I heard the same thing from my dealer service dept. The problem is a lot worse than Chrysler is making it out to be. Hopefully the AC head is the answer, and this problem is soon to be history.

+1 If it was a machining defect they wouldn't have gone through two redesigns/revisions to get it right. Mfg defects don't require redesigns and revisions.

Thanks to this thread, I come home on R&R in less than 2 weeks and have already contacted my service department to get the head replaced. SHe hasn't been driven since last March except that my wife drove the kids down to the Bus stop once a week. And my Jeep still has less then 3K miles on her since buying her last year Spetember (22nd) 2011. Also getting an AEV 2.5 lift on her. And the wife will never suspect a thing; she only thinks I'm having the Jeep repaired, hahahahaha said the pig all the way home!

Very nice. You should post a pic after the lift kit is installed and by the way, thank you for your service

Dropped of my 2012 JKUS this morning... An hour and a half after arriving, I got the keys to a rental and was told they would be replacing my driver's-side head (go figure)... Told to be back Monday to pick it up...

Untrue!! Design changes are done all the time to make components more manufacturable.

It's often much cheaper to revise the design then change the manufacturing process.

Maybe so but certainly not in this case. Please re-read what I said. The change/revision came as a direct result of a problem they were trying to resolve.

If the problem were a machining problem then wouldn't it show up right away? It took 18,000 miles in at least one case I remember reading about in this thread for the problem to show up. The problem shows up with very low mileage in some cases and after thousands of miles in other cases.

Update. So this afternoon at 4:30, after being at the dealer for 11 days, I finally picked up my Jeep! Head has been replaced with a new AC version, and they didn't find any damage to the cam or phaser so those didn't need replacing. No sure if they changed the oil or not, but the invoice didn't make any mention of it.

It's quiet now with no tick!! I'm eager to see if MPG has changed over the next few weeks.

All in all, I had a very good experience with my dealer (in Irvine, CA) as well as with STAR. Took longer than expected, but the level of customer service was exceptional.

Good to hear. They didn't change my oil either, only the coolant. I changed mine about 800 miles later since they put all new valve train parts in. Best to get any possible metal shavings out, if they exist.

I can't tell the difference between this video and the prior post by the guy showing us the you tube with a bad head. They all sound the same to me. Very noisy engines!

Orginal information needed.
I just got a new 2013 JKU and was looking through all these pages for that Head code I need to check against my engine. Need to see if my build date or head code applies to this issue.
Was it something like AC?? Thanks

AC is the latest revision to the left cylinder head. If you have any doubts post the number on the head, someone will let you know which head you have. Odds are you're GTG with an AC head. Enjoy your new Jeep!

On my 3rd head. They replaced pitted rocker arms and cams. Have me a months worth of car Payment and bumper to bumper warranty for 85000 miles.

That sucks! What was your build date? Did they replace an AA head with an AA head, twice? Hopefully you have an AC head now and no more problems.

Hmmm. I have been in Aerospace QA for 30 years now, and you would not believe the number of overlapping tolerance issues I have seen on mating assemblies. As long as the assemblies are manufactured near nominal, you will have no issues, but (during manufacture) if you give them an inch, they will take a mile. If you know what I mean. Engineers don't always get everything right the first time.

That ticking you hear is really a countdown clock to 12-21-12.

Now that I FINALLY bought my JK maybe I can add some encouraging info to this thread. I settled on a used 2012, bought directly from the orig owner. Being one of the paranoid ones about potential Penta-ticks, I was hesitant but the deal was very, very good and was bright silver, what I really wanted, so I bit.

The build date of mine is Sep 2011 and as of this past weekend has just over 16,000 miles on her and not a tick to be heard. The orig owner bought it days after it arrived at the dealer, did the early break-in oil change and it's been fed Mobil-1 ever since.

The EVIC reports an avg 19.8mpg per in serious urban crawl and suburban/rural driving on the 2hr drive home after the sale, FWIW. Granted I may not be out of the woods in regards to the head tick, but the engine is very quiet all things considered. Fingers crossed.

I want to say it sounds much better... Am I just having a moment of wishful thinking or can I get some backup here? What do you all think?

I want to say that the passenger side sounds loud now... Has anybody experienced this as well?
