Yep. Don't worry, it's not a matter of breaking the engine down. They'll probably pull the valve cover and see if any lifters are loose. This is a standard and very minor procedure.

by the way, when i was messing around I realized that you can easily read the passenger side build stamp. Maybe this is already known. Just need to ask the parts guy when the switch-over from A > B > C > D was on the passenger side.

I want to know the same thing. My 2012 doesn't tick (yet) but pings in warm weather unless I run 91 octane. Seems like getting the motor to run slightly cooler would be a good idea. I realize it won't make a difference in traffic unless you changed the fan parameters but it would still help.

Thinking out loud here, a lower temp thermostat sounds like a good idea, but "might" mess with emissions, certainly something worth looking into. Here's an idea, flame suit is on...........I have an old E-150 that has a thermostatically controlled fan which turns on to blow air across the fuel injectors to prevent what I'll call "vapor lock" during hot summer restarts. it works and works very well in fact, without it I would have problems restarting if the vehicle sat for more than 10 minutes on a very hot day. It can blow up to half an hour after the engine is shut down. I wonder if a small fan placed somewhere out of the way under the hood blowing on the left cylinder head would help with additional cooling of the head, and prevent failure for those people driving an AA head 2012 who don't have any problems yet. I don't see a problem for a DIY guy doing this and it won't be tampering with the engine in any way shape or form. Food for thought.

I would check with diablo to see how far they are from releasing a tuner for this motor - plus, if it were me, as a precaution, I would run 91 octane all the time.

I got my Jeep back today from the dealership. They are waiting for the head to come in and never had to tear apart the engine, Chrysler called back and said don't worry about it we will just send the head.

My head will be in later this week.....and now I have several days to come up with jokes about getting head...a new head.

Maybe they are getting closer to a recall.....

Sorry, I'm missing ma wee Jeepy. She's in the shop for 'er head and I'm stuck in a bloody rental Honda Accord for now.
(sob)

Get this:
My dealership tried to stall me for another week on top of this one.
I have already been driving for a week with this to give them time to get parts!
I made it clear that I wasn't comfortable driving the vehicle with a known problem with the engine like that, and that if they cover the rental for the two weeks I'm good, but only if that.
Inside of two hours I got a call back saying we were back on track and that a head was found and I'll have it back by the end of the week.
So I'm guessing the stall was either to gank my head for another job, or they ganked someone else's to give me mine and not have to cover the rental.
Whatever, I'm just glad I'm getting mine. Yeah I said it.

It seems plausible that they would try this kid of thing, as SOMEONE might go for it and buy them the time they obviously need to get parts.

Personally, i just don't want to drive the thing until it is fixed.

not unless it has a catostrophic failure by dropping a valve or something like that and it causes metal to go thru out the engine. I have yet to hear of anyone actually having total engine failure yet.

This Penstar motor is the talk of the industry ike its such a great motor. Has some major design flaws if you ask me. I am sure they have fixed them, they have been putting them in the ram 1500 trucks also now.

What would be awesome is if somebody would test the underhood temperatures with the engine cover on, and then with it off. I wonder how much cooler these things would run if we ditched all the sound deadening garbage?

Ive been reading the updates on this thread for awhile now, but i havent really understood weither there are 1: Different kinds of ticking. 2: If it is something to worry about 3: If i will eventually get a code up. 4: Has it it or will it cause damage and if i should just wait for a code? I have had my lifter replaced awhile ago, didnt do much. And i dont want to go back unless i have a code or if it is something that will damage the engine. Anyone answer these questions? The ticking is there, but theres no change in MPG like some people mentioned. Thanks in advance.

If your engine is ticking i would get it fixed.... period

Regardless of what the unknown is. Do it before your jeep is out of warranty

Does any one know if the pentastar is a clearance, or a non-clearance engine? A sticking valve is bad, a bent valve is worse (potential piston damage).

I have brought it in before, and replaced the lifter. I told the guy it would do nothing but i had no choice. Would it be unsmart to just wait for a code? It seems this is the only ticket to a new head.

It is an interference design.

Even with your warranty you might be in a for a huge headache if an incompetent tech has his way with your truck.

10K now on the replaced head, with no problems since, other than the dealership now wants to sell me an overpriced differential service.
