The Pentastar V6 is an interference design; it has valve reliefs but only for clearance under normal conditions. It does have a timing chain, reducing the possibility of heavy damage from a snapped belt.

Thank you for posting! It's a little bit of reassurance that the head replacement just may be a problem fixed, and I can stop waiting for the explosion!...

+1 The less the dealer or any tech touches your vehicle the better! I had a beautiful van totaled by a dealership, it was in for warranty work. I try and avoid bringing anything I own in for repairs, which is why this thread interests me so much and why I've held off pulling the trigger on a new Wrangler. Not all dealerships or techs are bad, but finding a good one can be tough. Opinions vary.

Update im in the new head club. 21,235 miles my CEL came on. Took it to the dealer and misfire on cylinder 2.

The dealer said "you have a misfire on cylinder 2 and you need a new head. So I will order you one on monday and call you next week when it comes in. It should take about a day and a half to fix it. We will get you a rental car to drive to work."

So they are replacing no questions asked and under warranty with no fight at all.

21K? That might be the "high" so far....as far as miles driven before the CEL showed up on this board.

Just the way it should be. That is how my dealer would handle it. Recently had a rattling in steering column. No questions asked. Free rental and two days later picked her up!

Now this engine tick??? I'm sorry but all the video posts here sound the same. It seems all these engines have a tap sound. I find myself listening g to every wrangler I walk by during the day and there are a lot here in Miami Beach. All the 2012 and 2013 sound the same to me. Never heard a perfectly quite engine yet. They all tap!

Got word yesterday that the dealerships is replacing my camshaft as well, and that the added time warrants my rental time being extended.
So far I'm being treated pretty well, but I'm tired of driving a...CAR.

Don't know if that is good or bad.

It will take me 3-4 years to get that many miles on my Jeep. Probably 3 years....as I'm driving it quite a bit.

Man, I hope the AC heads are a fix, and not a mask.

I hear ya. If you start to see people with 2013's with the AC head coming here posting ticking, or a CEL related to a misfire on the left side of the engine then you'll know the AC head wasn't the fix.

The dealer put 10w30 in yesterday for an oil change.. Caught the discrepancy on the paperwork when I got home.. Called them "I'm not going to lie, we put in 10w30 but it'll be fine"

...I don't think so UNEXCEPTABLE! I give you $104 for a synthetic oil change put in the correct viscosity and quit blowing smoke up my hole.. Jack offs.. Can't hardly wait to NOT deal with these butt clowns anymore.

Wonder how my pentastar would have faired with said oil with temps in the single digits and no garage to sleep in and stay warm

It would have faired just fine. sure 5-20 or 5-30 is perferable but 10-30 synthetic flows plenty well at low temps.

Didn't someone on here hit 30K miles before having the tick and a head replaced?

I'm at 32,500 miles, late December 11 build date, barely a tick, no cel. Tick doesn't sound like the ones I've seen on YouTube so I dunno if I should get it checked or not.

Why would you not get it checked out?

8,500 and no tick that I am aware of. I wonder what percentage is affected. In theory, I suppose all can, depending on engine temps and other conditions. I have the lifetime powertrain warranty, in case it's needed. I wish they would just do a recall and get it over with. I'm sure they have figured out the real cause of the problem.

Same build date as you here! I don't think I have the tick. There is a tapping that was alway there but I think this is normal?? I see a 2013 in front of my building. Will ask when I see the owner to start her up and I can listen. Oh I only have 7k miles.

My CEL came on today. 2012 built early Dec 2011. Just rolled over 10k. Doesn't really tick, but defiantly is idling rough now. Called the dealer to ask them what to do, told them code P0304 came up. Guy had me make an appointment, but at the same time asked if I would just drop it off and get a ride to work. When I asked him how many heads they've replaced, he said maybe 1 on a JK and maybe 4-5 on Grand Cherokees. It goes in Tuesday AM, hopefully it will be as smooth as some here describe, but based on his comment of not repairing many, I'm worried.

I listened to this and then others in YouTube that state their engines have been fixed with a new cylinder head. I can't hear any difference from before and after. They all tick!

You sure you aren't hearing the injector noise?

I really listen closely and I can't hear the difference between a tick and injectors. I've listened on lap top. iPhone 5 and iPad. Very clear sound but can't all these YouTube videos sound alike to me!

I vote injector noise + paranoia (not your fault)... When mine had the tick it was VERY obvious... Someone on here compared it to tapping a pencil on a table... That just about nails it on the head. Wranglers have injector noise, you will NEVER get rid of that... It's not a Benz... There is a very distinct sound to a tick and I didn't hear it with that video... It helps to actually open the hood and putting your camera somewhere around the brake fluid reservoir. Revving just a touch (+1,000-1,500 rpm) and letting it rest back to idle a few times really brings out the tick too... Again, revving will make the injectors sound louder as well, but the tick will be easier to hear too (if it's there).

The noise is more like a ting, ting than a tick. And it comes and goes, plus all these videos do sound the same. I'm not to worried, it is what it is. Thanks for listening and checking.

Yea, mine doesn't sound at all like the bad ones so I'm assuming its an injector noise when I hear it. Hoping I was one of the lucky ones.

Looks like I have an AA head on the passenger side according to this quick check. Does that mean I am doomed? 7k on a 2012 Sahara, so far I haven't noticed anything abnormal.

ETA: I actually just went outside, raised the hood and cranked it. It definitely sounds different on the driver's side than the passengers side. I don't know if I would call it ticking, but it is much louder on the driver's side. Guess I'll ask the dealer about it at my next oil change.
