If a bad timing chain tensioner in the 3.6 sounds anything like it did in my S2000 it's more of a rattling and ticking than a straight tick. But I don't know the design so, who know. Could be.
I started mine this afternoon with ambient temperature of 74 degrees Fahrenheit. It was absolutely quite.

Yep!

So, how's yours running now, several days after the fact?

I guess a head replacement goes right on the Carfax report, no?

Did they extend your warranty any?

Also, Semper Fidelis right back atcha. I served six years with that fine organization myself.

Jeep is running great and quiet like it should be. I do not know if it goes on carfax, but no worries with that - as long as it's fixed! It still stuns me with some of the responses on this thread!

10 years for me brother, but I continue to bleed green!

Well, it is disappointing to have the newness of your Jeep stolen from you so quickly. I'm a bit OCD about oil and have been putting full synthetic (Pennzoil Ultra) in mine every 4K since 2K miles on the odo and even had my first used oil analysis done at the 14K change. I like knowing exactly what's going on inside, and now I have to start the break-in process all over again and flush out all the crap, all the while keeping my fingers crossed that the stealership tech knows wtf he's doing during open heart surgery on my Jeep.

Well I dropped mine off on monday and got a call wednesday that the service rep called chrysler again and this time the person he talked to said "yep, it needs a head replacement" so they ordered in the head and I got my jeep back today.

so here are the before and after the head replacement videos. the second was taken today as soon as I got home from the dealership.

first video- before head replacement but after tappet(lifter) replacement that did not fix the noise

now the video taken today once home in the same garage and taken with same iphone4 as other video and it is the same jeep.

I think everyone should now be able to tell what "ticking" we who have a ticking motor are talking about. Second video of course has ticking noises that are to be expected coming from an engine but the sewing machine type ticking in the first video is the ticking that should not be there.

now I just hope it doesnt come back

What a difference, otnewt! Thanks for taking the time to post that.

Man, the ~20 second mark in the first video sounds familiar, and makes my head hurt!

Thanks otnewt! Great job!

Now the difference between the normal, noisy Pentastars, and the problem, "ticking" Pentastars should be obvious to everyone.

This makes me feel a lot better....I actually don't think I have any irregular ticking in mine....Sounds just like yours after the head replacement. For reference my Jeep was manufactured 8-11.

Guess I was just being overly sensitive....But who knows I guess I could be wrong still

Great otnewt! I appreciate the videos since it makes the sound, and the difference between wrong and fixed very apparent. Much better than my typing! Glad yours is fixed.

May be the sensitivity of the mic on the camera, but mine may be a little quieter. That mechanical background noise sounds great after expecting the "lifter" to come flying out of the valve cover.

Just got mine back today and holy crap what a difference. It even seems to idle and pull better on acceleration. I couldn't be happier! It was absolutely worth all the bitchin' to Chrysler to force the dealership into taking this seriously.

Best part is they fired up the "normal" Wrangler (one they used to show me they all sound like that) while I was there with mine parked right next to it and mine purred like a kitten and theirs just ticked, ticked away. Vindication!!!! Wonder if they are going to fix it or let some poor sap buy it and have to figure it out. Probably counting on someone who doesn't care or believes new Jeeps just sound like that.

Damn, I'm happy!!! Now for the leveling kit and new tires... WoooHoooo!!!!

Looks like I will be contacting one of the dealers here on Monday when they are open. I've been reading these updates and watching videos but otnewt's before and after videos made my mind up that something just isn't right.

My ticking started roughly 1000 miles ago around the 2000 mile mark. It is mostly heard on the driver's side through the wheel well and when the hood is opened. I first noticed it while I was in a drive through waiting line against the building wall. I thought it was the person in front or behind me, then parked alone next to another building and realized it was mine. My tick is not loud, but definitely noticeable and it sounds like otnewt's did when he had the issue.

My build date is 10-11 and I'm at roughly 3200 miles right now. Let's hope they don't try the run around game with this issue.

I will update my ticking progress with videos and posts similar to what otnewt did in the coming future.

side note on run arounds:

I had the unfortunate luck of having a bad passenger front hub bearing assembly since new and I did not notice it until the drive home that night (200 mile trip on the highway.. jeep was new with 12 miles on it on pick up). That problem was reported at 800 miles and was not fixed until 1600 miles by a different dealership than originally taken to AND after numerous calls to Chrysler. The second dealership replaced the hub bearing assembly and made sure I felt no issues before it was taken down from the lift.

I'm betting on the latter. Unfortunately (from what I've noticed in my dealership experiences) this is how most of them operate. They play the dumb card and the "everything is normal" game.

I'm glad your problem was fixed. Now go out and enjoy your Jeep!

Nice otnewt that's what we needed. Back to back vids of broken and fixed on the same vehicle with the same recording device Mine definitely sounds like the 2nd vid and I thought that was loud but apparently not.

Thats interesting to hear. I drive about 3 or 4 new JKs a day with ~1 mile on each. I noticed they almost all have a ticking noise when cold starting and test driving them. None that bad though. Love the new motor compared to last years. If anyone wants to pass a Hemi Grand, believe me when I say the new JK can easily

After months of searching I am working a deal on a manual Rubicon that was located for me. From looking at the dealers info it seems this Jeep was built in August of 2011. Many have had trouble with this build time frame and I hope to find this one is not one of them.

My question is can this "ticking" problem be noticed from day one on most with a serious problem or is it something that develops over time? This Jeep I am working a deal on is exactly what I have been looking for and I hate to miss my chance. I asked the dealer about this and he assured me all would be ok before I actually take delivery.

I plan on a long test drive to check for any problems and was hoping any unusual ticking could be noticed before I sign any papers. Can anyone give any suggestions of how to know if this certain JK has this problem prior to me actually buying the vehicle?

My salesman did say that I could completely inspect this JK any way I wish prior to purchase and if I had any concerns I was not obligated to buy. I would again hate to over react to a normal sounding motor and pass up this deal.....any suggestions are appreciated.

EDIT:....I just noticed the above video and that helps me very much. I believe I can tell the difference now however am still curious if this severe "ticking" was obvious from the first drive or does it usually take time to begin?

Robocop buy your Jeep!!! If it is the one you want then get it. Yours may or may not develope the ticking. Mine took about 900 miles to come along. Your dealer will fix it if it does happen so no worries. It took a bit to get mine fixed and you know what? I wouldn't trade my Jeep for anything now. It is freakin' awsome!!!

If you want to put your dealer through it and you think you hear the ticking ask for a leak down test as well as the cam phaser test prior to purchase. Don't think they'll be happy about it, or willing to do it, but it is your money.

Honestly, I would just buy the Jeep and enjoy it. If it ticks and you don't like it then get it fixed.

I never really thought the ticking was an issue in mine prior to tossing a code Robocop. If it wasn't for the MIL I wouldn't have known.

I am wondering, has anybody had, or even heard, of an actual mechanical failure of a Pentastar that was the direct result of what started out as the notorious ticking sound. I am not talking about a part being found "out of tolerance" and they went ahead and replaced the head, but an actual failure of a component that damages the engine internally. Also, what guarantee are those that have had the head replaced getting that the replacement head will not develop the ticking problem after it has been in service for some period of time? Since it takes on average 1-3K +/- miles before this problem seems to start, we won't know if the "fix" actually solved the problem long term for a few months at least.

Maybe...but I bet if you check around you will find Grand Cherokees and others with this same problem...and the resulting head swaps etc. I doubt they would replace heads to appease the noise sensitivities of some...it is simply too expensive and acknowledges a problem.
