Mine ticks the dealer tired to tell me it's injectors. I told them I'm not an idiot and it was def a problem. They won't do anything till the cel comes on. Going to bring it to another dealer and get a second opinion. This is bs how jeep won't just fix the problem when they know its an issue. I don't want to wait for it to miss fire that's not good for the engine.

This is all very normal... you obviously had the optional papal election package installed.

well actually injector tick is normal. Not saying that is what your ticking is but FI ticking is normal. go pick up a cheap mechanics stethoscope and place the end of it on the injectors and see if that is the source of your ticking.

I actually never noticed ticking. My CEL first came on at 8900 miles.

Well this is not good .im not looking to pay 35k for bad engine .might need to look for a older jeep then.that mini van motor is looking pretty good right now...or they should just option the hemi easy fix
This could push out the diesel engine faster thats a plus.

Talking Fixed

Just picked up my jeep from Dewey Jeep in Ankeny, Iowa. No more ticking They replaced the head with an AC revision. Oddly enough they also replaced the cat converter as the tech was hearing a rattle from that area as well. It took them a full week, but I was out on vacation anyway so no big deal.

I still plan on visually verifying the head Julian date when I get home, but it would seem that the good folks at Dewey took good care of me.

I'd be happy to post a pic of my job/parts receipt if it would be helpful to anyone here.

Big thanks to those that came before me and I'll keep my fingers crossed for those still struggling.

Not sure if this had already been posted? Quite possibly the fastest head replacement ever! :-)

Unexpected Pentastar Cylinder Head Replacement Under Warranty - 2012 Jeep Wrangler Long-Term Road Test
That is pretty much the standard turn around now. Which does indicate they are doing quite a few of them and getting real good at it. I reminds me of the Vega days, the techs got real good at installing cylinder sleeves and/or replacing head gaskets, not to mention the similar poor R&D.

My 2012 jk 2dr sport also makes this ticking noise. I had never considered anything wrong until I read this thread! My date of manufacture on the door is feb 2012. I have around 9800km on the odometer.

What's the consensus on this issue?

You can take it in and have it scanned, or just wait to see if you get a CEL. Remember it does have a 5 yr 100K warranty, so drive it like you stole and see happens.

Living in a rural area with no dealership nearby is such a hassle.

Mine as I said earlier goes in for a new Head 4/8...hope they do a change with an up to date head? Mine JKU you can hardly hear it running at idle, perfect running engine... Til 16000mi then still running great, quiet but... engine warning light comes on and the "ECO" light stops working??? I bring it in to my dealer and bingo they come out and tell me my new head is on order, just like that!! No warning cept those lights... hope the engine sounds and runs as good as it did all the time before...after the job is done!!

I just brought it to the dealer to have them fix the 2 lites, they just came and told me that the head had to be done...no question! Lucky me in one way...I suppose?

I ordered the JKU Sahara 12/6/11, delivered to the dealer 1/6/2012 so build date the middle Dec '11. Can't believe after all these post that it runs so great with no noise that they want to do this no question, gas mileage did drop a bit after EWL came on.

Wish me luck that it's an up to date head and after the "fix" the damn thing runs as good as it does now ?

Yeah, there's no question you'll have the latest head. No worries. It sucks that a lot of people with higher mileages are getting no symptoms. At least the others were literally ticking time bombs.

SA,

I have a '12 JKU Sahara Auto tranny, on the highway at 65mph 400 miles on a tank is, 22mpg at that speed is common and that's measuring gas and miles the real way. The gas mileage thingy in the cluster is about 2/10 of a mile per gallon off from a real measure (if it reads 23, it's really doing 22.8, pretty close!). Above 65MPH gas mileage starts dropping fast Since my Engine Warning Lite went on and the "ECO" lite went off and the new heads been ordered it's off a couple MPG??

As I said in my last post, I hope it runs as good as now after they swap heads Apr 8th! I traded my beloved '07 JKU just to get this new engine and new tranny!!

Good Luck with all!

I was listening to my engine and i think i have the dreaded "tick". I have a build date of 2/12 on my door. Would it be as easy as take it to the dealer, ask them if they're aware of the head issue and wait for a replacement with a new head with the updated design?

Can you guys listen and help me decide if i have it? I'm pretty sure i do.

Well wouldn't I fall into the build date with the bad heads? I'd rather get it taken care of now than later. It sounds rather louder at startup.

So what can I do? Ask the dealer if they're aware?( I know they damn well should be)

2012 JKUR build date 6-12 just starting ticking at 5100 miles. I have noticed a reduced gas milage from 14-15 down to 12-13.

No Sorry. I hold this record. 4 hours. I dropped off my 2012 last year for ticking/CEL at 8:00 Monday morning, Service Department called at noon same day - "all done -replaced head". It must be noted, however, that I had complained about the ticking on a previous occasion, and was told the routine "just normal injector noise"
Please send my World Record Pentastar Head Replacement certificate to me via e-mail.

Head Photo

So i took a photo of the serials stamped on the side of the head. Looks like mine is from February 10th in 2012.

Does it look like i have an AB head? I THINK it sounds alright. We'll see what the dealer says tomorrow anyway. (sorry if the photo is rotated wrong...)

Probably have the AA head. If I remember correctly the AB head made its debut in May/June.

I have 2012 4Dr and engine code P0302 came up. BOTH CYLINDER HEADS BEING REPLACED. I live in Northern New Jersey and bought the car last May 2012. Engine was built 8 months prior. Paramus Jeep has had car for 4 days. Had 14K miles, no cheap gas, regular oil changes, normal maintenance, and now this. Have had Ford, Subaru, Nissan, Chevy, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and now Jeep. All have had issues.
