That is because it is unrelated. You guys are hearing the engine without enough oil in it. After a few seconds when the oil reaches the top of the engine it quiets down. Mine will do it every 4th or 5th morning. In theory, the oil filters have an anti-drainback valve and this will never happen. In practice, it happens often. Over 100,000 miles it should result in minimal wear. Over 300,000 miles? Well that should be about the time to replace the engine anyway.

3.6L pentastar filter does not have an anti drain back valve. The filte is just an open cartridge, nothing like a canister filter that has an anti drain back valve.

But it does hold oil- maybe a third of a quart. Must be the seal that helps it do that. If you don't loosen that seal by undoing the filter, you will drain less oil during an oil change.

I have changed oil 3X on mine and have not found that to be the case. If that were the case when I removed the filter cap oil would flow out and make a mess and it does not. I beleive others have found the same thing as me. My engine is quiet and has no decernable ticks at 8500 miles yet.

The second time I changed my oil, this happened to me based on what drained out. I'll try it again next time and leave the drain nut undone.

Correct. There is an inlet and outlet. Once the engine is off and oil pressure is lost, gravity takes effect. I have even removed the filter cover several times just to see. Except for the filter the canister is empty.

Having opened the lid on many a motor in my years I can tell you that full synthetic, when changed every 5-7.5k miles, will leave your internals looking like new. 145k miles on my neighbors 04 F150 and there are no signs of yellowing, carbon, nothing inside. Just clean aluminum.

in the same spirit, i've pulled the valve cover and oil pan on my nissan and honda each with 200k miles and they both look brand new inside. never seen a drop of synthetic. I think the key is changing the oil when required by the oil type.

^Thanks. I see an obvious difference between the two heads. I realize the temp gauge is analog so it isn't terribly accurate, but my temp gauge never goes above halfway. Never got as high as the white dot on yours.

Threw a CEL over the weekend. Brought it in this morning and got the same diagnosis. 2012 JK with 14,300 miles.

I don't think what we are seeing is a difference in the heads. It looks like some gasket remnant on the old head that makes it look like there is something going on there.

I agree. The ports in the old and new heads are the same size. The gasket remnants create the illusion that the new one is much smaller, but it's not, IMHO.

Good to see you back Bill! That's interesting. They'd have to be the same size though, because of where they mate to the block, wouldn't they? The mods are probably to the guides and internal. IMO they really have to think about cooling the engine block and heads better.

I was gone overseas for a while and the CEL came on for my wife. (2012 JK, 33000 km). She booked an appointment but it cleared itself before she took it in. They said "Well now that it is cleared we cant tell what it would have been" That is total horse poo. But oh well.

Then just 2 days ago when she was picking me up it came back on. I scanned it with an OBD2 scan tool I have and it was "#6 cylinder misfire". Another appointment but now it has cleared again.

I bring it in today, the CEL is not on at the moment though. Is the code in the history good enough? I swear I feel it missing sometimes but the light doesn't come on anymore for some reason.

Advice??? Does the CEL normally come and go like that? What do I tell the dealer?

Even if the CEL is out if its seen it as a hard code it will store it. I'm running a trail this weekend and next week I'm going to dump it off. This noise is getting ridiculous cel or not. I have to change the oil too and want to swap to synthetic but I know when they do the head they are supposed to change the oil anyway and I don't want to waste the oil since I will have to refill it with synthetic again when I get it back.

OK, so I decided to do a little looking on the forum for bad cylinder head and BOOM, there's a lot here! So I went to the dealer yesterday due to check engine light on and I asked the tech when he was done what was wrong. He said "Bad cylinder head, needs to be replace. We see a lot of these, kind of common. After we replace them with the new ones, so far, we haven't had anyone come back." He seemed truthful. I figured I'd get a more truthful answer from him rather than counter guy or my salesman who I saw who said "I'm sure it's nothing, they'll get rid of it." So needless to say I have an appointment for May 28th to have it replaced. My big question is why isn't there a recall and or what constitutes a recall. MFG date is 8/11 and the code that was read was P0302. Anything I should look out for that can help me would be much appreciated.

Cool thanks. My scan tool picks it up as a stored code. Just not sure if it had to be active code to get it taken seriously.

My tick has actually gotten quieter over time. It was loud at 1000km. I have been running Mobil 1 since 500kms. Maybe that has helped mine last to 33000km?

Welllllll.... They flashed it and said to come back later if it happened again. Ah well. At least its on record. I'm sure it will.

They were very nice about it all though.

mine too

Mine is in line to get the head replaced again for a second time, but they told me to just drive it because they are back ordered for a month on the new heads. OBVIOUSLY Jeep should have a recall, and I am very curious why it hasn't happened yet, except for our Government seeing that a major engine swap could put Jeep brand under. Just saying.
And what are they gonna do for me after it happens a third time....Lemon law comes into effect!???????
