If you've got the bad head and you're approaching the end of your powertrain warranty, beat the ever loving snot out of that motor. The weakest link (the valve) should, in theory, bite the dust quickly.

Better yet, I wonder if there's anything we can do to sabotage it and cause failure quicker? My dealer told me that if I have no CEL then don't bother bringing it in.

Scan gauge and Ultra Gauge are two you can purchase. I have an UG and love it. Or, you can go to most auto parts stores and the will let you hook up an OBDII gauge for free to run a diagnostic.

I should also mention that there are now Smart Phone Apps that do the same thing if you have the right cord.

Had the JK into the shop today...7150 miles...I was concerned about engine noise. The mechanic listened and went all over the motor and found nothing out of the ordinary. I will be keeping an eye on this, cause I heard a definate tick noise on the drivers side. I guess if it gets louder I will go back an bitch!

I had the same thing...the mechanic said oh you must have been on the forum again, but he knows of the issue...and I told him today that if it gets louder I will be back!

This:
You can easily read stored OBDII error codes in any JK by doing the following:

Starting with the ignition key in the off position, cycle the key through 'Acc' to 'On' and back off (quickly - before dash lights display and 'ding' is heard) three times. Off-On-Off-On-Off-On. All stored codes will read out in the odometer display.

Source:
http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/rea...sy-113786.html

If you get ------, there are no codes stored.

It is easy to get paranoid by reading some of these posts as you have to figure that for every person posting about a problem there are many more without a problem. That being said, this forum is a great resource. You can gain access to insight from so many other owners. We would know about any potential problems on here long before any automotive rags write about them.

Having access to this forum, a little mechanical knowledge and being able to read OBDII codes one way or another will go a long way.

I got a little odd info at the dealer today..... So here goes, I took the 2012 JKU (Altitude with AA head as far as I can tell May 12 build) in for her 10,000 mile service, you know oil change, 5 wheel rotation (you got to ask for that, btw) and 30 point blah blah blah. Anyway I asked the service dude if they could listen to the engine I said. "it seems a little loud to me on the drivers side"
{back story, if you've ever read any of my posts on this topic I've always said my Jeep sounds like a "sewing machine" I've always maintained that I'm probably doomed like a lot of us are. I was paranoid at first, but that kinda went away. And I just always have been of the mindset that if it happens, it happens and they will fix it. So today was my first real good chance to bring it up to the service guy..... End back story}
So upon paying for my service he showed me on the ticket that the mechanics indicated that the engine sounded normal. He continued and (I'll paraphrase the service guy) ...... "Yeah they almost always throw a code, we've done about 200 heads" "not just wranglers all vehicles with the new motor"
I'm kinda taken back at this point, most times they are downplaying obvious issues and insted this guy is selling me on a problem! The Service guy continued... "they're not really loud usually, but they throw that code, on drivers side #2". I said... "yeah I've read some stuff about it" He went on and this is where it gets almost comical. He said "You want to see if you got a bad one,? run the hell out of it right when you start it up!" "That can cause it to throw the code" Just get in it and run it hard without warm up. " That will usually do it."
I smiled, paid my bill and left kind of puzzled. I'm still actually a bit puzzled. I thought it was odd. No further words right now........
PS It doesn't sound like I'm going to have any issues getting a replacement if that day should come. "Run the hell out of it"
Truly words to live by. Rolf!
This;-)

Well......you don't get a code, you damage something that won't throw a code and pay the price when the warranty is done!?!?!?!?

Exactly. What will happen is you'll pony up some hard earned cash and pay for the repair, or HOPE that Chrysler Good Wills it. There are no guarantees that will happen though.

I thought all the early build heads were bad, is that not the case? My build date is December 2011.

Have they fixed it or not? You'd think they would have figured it out by now?

You would think...but this is Chrysler...not exactly the epitome of engineering or quality.

I didn't mean that I was going to drive it off a cliff for Christ's sake. No warm ups, maybe harder accelerations, I don't know. My only point is, that if my miles starting getting up with out a code it may then be time to "drive it like I stole it". Just saying.

Got my first MIL at mileage 19,500 on a 2012 JKUR. Checked the code with my reader and it was P0302. #2cylinder misfire. Thank goodness for this forum.....I kinda was ready for this at some point or another. Contacted the dealer after I cleared it and they said yeah, probably the head. They said to keep an eye on it and if it throws the code again bring it in. Got the second code 4 days later and just took it to Glendora Jeep. They found #2 valve leaking down so they ordered the new head and sent me on my way. I will go back in a week for the work. Seems painless so far....fingers crossed

Dont feel too bad deepjeep. I have a 2012 also. Bought it knowing about the head issue. I ran the engine when I bought it. no tick at all. took a gamble. now almost a year later and 16,000 miles I have a slight tick. not enough to worry about. I have a 5 year warranty, and I am keeping a vigil eye on it. Meanwhile, I am enjoying the jeep.

Just intalled a lift and tires. Looking real good and I am not worried a bit. But having the knowledge and knowing what to look for is key. I think you and I are better off than most peole who do not read the forums and have no idea.

So enjoy, and relax and enjoy....

Now that my friend is an admirable outlook. You know there is a potential problem and know how to deal with it should it happen. You can't change the fact so you just enjoy your Jeep each and every day and don't worry about it. If that day comes so be it. If it doesn't all the better.

Just pull plug wire on #2 cylender and drive around awhile, it will show a code.

Don't do that. It will thow a code but will still pass the compression and leakdown test so you're wasting your time and the techs.

At 15000 miles I threw P302 three times. Dealer ordered a new head and three days later they installed it. Took about six hours. I've put 3000 miles on it since without a hitch. Just a small bump in the road. Now I don't have to worry if it's going to happen.

Does the engine run any differently with the new head? Quieter? Smoother? More power?
