Picked my jeep up tonight from the dealer. Went in yesterday got it back today. Motor it noticeably quieter and no more ticking. Lets see how long it lasts.

My Pentastar is just getting too loud now. I've been on this thread before, I'm at 10,600 miles, and have had the ticking since mile 3000. I've had my lifter replaced at around 7000 miles, because that's what they said was the issue, I knew it won't doing anything, but I'm not going back there until I get a code, hopefully soon. This thing is starting to bother me, it just sounds so bad. The mechanic side of me tells me to take it in now and get something done, but the other side of me tells me that it's be a waste of time until I get a code. I just hope that when I get the head replaced, the engine will quite down. Just a lot of random noises and hums. Do you guys notice this too? Sounds like a diesel.

Yes mine sounded the same, like a diesel until I got the head replaced yesterday, now it's quiet

That's great, glad to hear that. Hopefully that's the fix and I get a lot of miles out of this engine, these kind of problems worry me.

Yes mine is louder than months ago but not as bad as some posts here. Still quiet in the cabin and no other engine issues. Just going to drive it until something happens. I'm at about 10k miles

That's my plan. I try to keep it off my mind, but it's like a ticking time bomb.

Yup it's only a matter of time, just like mine was.

My philosophy is if it's going to happen, it will so I don't stress over it. I will deal with it then.

I am still trying to decide if my 13 Sport will be a long term vehicle for me. I really don't fancy the idea of paying for a head replacement outside of the warranty period. Perhaps there will be no more reports of AC heads failing and the 3.6 will prove to be a fantastic engine. However, if the forum starts having loads of people post about it, I may only keep her a few years.

For those of us who had the head replaced, has the problem returned?? Is the engine still tick free after putting more miles on it?

Yes. The problem on mine returned. I definitely got less mpg and noticeable power loss with a check engine light within a couple thousand miles. Lemon law'd and got out of that Jeep before the dealer replaced the driver side head for the second time. Talk about a nightmare. Stealership didn't even provide a loaner or rental.

Curious. Did you get another jeep?

Trout, was yours a 12 or a 13? And was the replacement head an "AC" that failed? I'd also be curious if you got another Jeep.

Yes, just did today actually. lol
A year and 1 month later. Believe me it wasn't an easy decision and am still very wary on it. Terrified actually. Hoping all the problems have been fixed.

I don't know what the stamp on the head was. I'm positive it was whatever number the first run of pentastar engines were. It was a '12 that I ordered in the first week in July of 2011. (very early build 2012). It went to the dealer for the head replacement in January 2012.

Has anyone mentioned these issues in any other vehicle other than the Wranglers?
I have a 3.6 in my wifes '11 Grand Cherokee and have had no issues with it at all.

In January 2012 I took my JK to the dealer to get the head replaced. There was 4 vehicles in the shop for the same treatment. Mine was the first Wrangler to show up at that dealer with the problem.

This is not a Wrangler specific issue. This is across the board with all Pentastar equipped vehicles.

There is a thermostat on the head that fails. Tech talk at the dealer leads them to believe it causes the problem, blocking coolant to that side when it closes and resulting in the failure. Just had mine done, dealer only had it for two days, part took two weeks. During the wait had a few 90+ days, code cleared. maybe there is something to the thermostat location

That is very interesting. Is there an actual serviceable thermostat in the left head?
