Dude, you must be miserable. All that angst, PLUS you think that everyone should feel the same way!

Many of us just choose not to be bothered so much by this occurrence. While it wasn't exactly a joyous occasion when I had my head replaced, I am glad to have it over with (for now?). I've got 12k on it since the replacement, and there are no signs of recurrence yet.

Soooo... you went to the trouble of joining a this "sheep and whiners" forum because you are one too? Or, maybe it's because your going set us all on the straight and narrow and save us from ourselves? Gee, what a nice guy!

Welcome to WF, I think........

DeepJeep1371, no beef about the CEL. Although my cousin is one of the owners of the dealership. I very lucky in that aspect. I also asked them to take picks of the parts being removed. I will post up all pics they give me.

Altitude, built June 2012, first oil change at 3100 miles, running Royal Purple. Now has 4200 miles. No issues. I just find the engine timing is a little retarded at regular acceleration.

I've had my 2012 for over a year and I am at 23K miles. I have the older head and have been expecting the issue. I did remove the black plastic engine cover and am running synthetic oil as well as 89 octane gas (have since new). I am wondering now if I'm just prolonging the issue. So far nothing unusual.

Maybe we should just run paraffin oil and old gas and get it over with?

I get what you're saying. I put about 5K a year on my early 2012. So, I'll be out of power-train warranty by 25K. I plan to report a tick, whether I have one or not, near the end of my warranty!

I tell you what, I jumped up to 5w30 full synthetic and it quited up the motor a bit and Im getting 2 more miles to the gallon all around. Either way, anyone with the 13's having troubles?
Mine wasn't loud at all. It sounded the same as it dad a month off the lot. One day I noticed it was hotter than normal, two days later the CEL came on.

Still no CEL on my '12 and dealer won't look at it unless it throws a CEL. But hey, I can almost get 13mpg if I keep it below 2k RPM and stay out of everyone's way. Must be my 33's....

Please remind me what warranties are for again

My head started misfiring and my fuel economy wasn't any worse than normal.

Same here. Was getting the usual 17-18 mpg avg before and after head replacement.

Sounds like a dealer issue to me more than anything. There are many examples of people getting heads replaced on here without a CEL ever coming on. My Jeep never really had a noticeable tick - if it had, they would have been willing to do a leak down test prior to the CEL. But everything seemed fine and normal until the CEL came on.

I would also be very surprised if one were not able to get Chrysler to cover $$ for repairs post 100k/5 year on this issue. Over the years, Chrysler has covered many things for me post 36k warranty simply because I asked. And these were just stupid things breaking like the rear wiper assembly.... not well documented problems like this one.

My jeep (2012 JKU Rubi) just came back from the dealer for head replacement. 32,000kms it started to get an intermittent CEL. The usual code was found and cleared 3 times before they ordered a head. Took 4 weeks to arrive. We drove it the whole time without any issues, just the CEL light on once and a while.

All changed now, took them 2 days because they had some sort of seal leak a few times. Gave us a loaner.

It always seemed very "ticky" and at 1000kms I put in Mobil 1 and used it ever since. It actually seemed to quiet down by 10,000 kms. But the light came on and the head was replaced with no drama.

One weird thing, after my wife picked it up from the dealer, the Uconnect wont work. No voice or answer from her at all. Odd. So I guess it goes back to get looked at. I'm not home or I would pull the radio fuse and muck with it first. Odd.

Anyways, no complaints about the dealer or the Jeep. Love it and don't regret my decision for a second. I knew about the possible head issue before I even bought it. No worries.

In response to Attitudes post, when you spend $30k plus on any vehicle or product, there is an expectation of quality and function as designed. We have the right to demand defective parts to be replaced or repaired. Audi recalled all RS6s for suspension failures only after the owners from forums like this one banded together and collectively raised a stink.

I agree with Mike101! Do like I did and email Chrysler customer service at their website. Let's get this thing started. I think a few thousand emails will do it. The website says they are obligated to answer your questions with one business day.

This engine is in a LOT of Chrysler vehicles but there seem to be more issues with it in the Wrangler. Any idea why that is?

Negative on that one Martin. At least at my shop & talking to other techs when I'm at school, we have put may way more heads on mini-vans by a large margin. And I like doing them in vans cause it's one of the few warranty jobs that we can beat the book time paid. The JKs are a PITA to do compared to other vehicles with a 3.6.

OK. Thanks for the info. I was led to believe there were more problems on Wranglers. So do you think the lasted mods to the head have solved the problem? I sure hope so.

Of course. I am one of those paying customers as well. However, aren't they doing that? Are there stories on here of someone having a CEL, a bad head, and Chrysler not repairing? Seems that they are doing just that, no?

Recalls are usually used for safety concerns. I don't believe this has led to any safety issues, so I wouldn't be expecting a recall for it.

So, my #2 cylinder head is being replaced. Should I verify it is the entire "assembly"? And, should I have them check all cylinders for defect? Also, my dealer doesn't have rentals, so I'm stuck without a vehicle.

My 2012 JKU was built in 09/11. I have 22,000 miles on it and think I can hear the tick. 2 dealers tell me its nothing but havent run any tests on it to see. It hasnt thrown any lights yet. I am getting ready to put a lift on it, but dont want to void my powertrain warranty with this looming issue. Im debating on trading her in for a 14, but its Cosmos Blue which you cant get any more and my wife likes the Jeep. Any suggestions on how to feel good about current Jeep before putting mod money into it?

a lift won't void your powertrain warranty.

UPDATE:

I am getting a new head on the drivers side. It's going to take a week to get the parts in according to the dealership. I had to really stir the SH** pot with management and Chrysler Care to get a rental. Very disappointing.

My wife just two weeks ago wanted a jeep to replace her current aging vehicle. After this engine failure @ 16k miles and the *grand* customer service experience along with the latest Chrysler recall fiasco, she now thinks she will start looking at other manufactures for her next vehicle.

I know this is true with my GM trucks, as ive had lifts on 2 of them and dealers never gave me a problem. Ive had Jeep dealers tell me Chrysler can and will void the whole warranty for a suspension lift. Pretty sure ive read it on here too. Just dont want to get burned. Probably just a sales ploy by dealers to sell you on an overpriced MOPAR lift.
