Just got my Jeep back. They replaced the head, lifters and valves. Two day turnaround. The loud tick is completely gone. It didn't run this smooth and quiet the day I drove it off the dealership lot. Now it's a matter of time to tell if my gas mileage will increase. Keeping my fingers crossed. Here is the service invoice and the pics of my old head.

I took a brief hit after my head replacement, but went from never better than 15ish before to 18+ after a few hundred miles city driving and an easy 24 on the highway.

Don't worry about that. Its all still there. Every event is recorded. Mine did the same thing. It was reset two times before they would change the head.

After 2.5 weeks in the shop, I got my JKUR back with the new drivers side head. It definitely sounds better than it did before. As a matter of fact, to my ears it sounds better than when I drove it off the lot. It also seemed to have more power as well, but that could be due to the fact that I had a gutless Nissan Centra as a rental.

Did the dealer provide you with the rental?

I was afraid that it was going to take that long... I'm taking her in On Monday. I have the extended warranty so they told me they will provide me with a rental for the person that asked.

That's good. I thought all warranty work warranted a loaner from the dealer? Glad I have a B/U car; just in case.

Well that's one of the reasons why I purchased that extended warranty because this is my only vehicle and apparently they only pay the rental if you get that warranty...

Plus I'd read about the head issues... Im gonna miss taking the back road shortcuts to get to work faster.... Freeway traffic here I come....

Is every 2012 Jk going to inevitably be plagued by this issue? Is it a discernible tick? I hear a tick, but I believe it's the injectors.

I don't know about every 2012 but mine has always ticked... It sounds like a diesel at idle. That's the only way to describe it for me

That sucks! I'd love to know if it is an AB or AC head?

Well lets see I will make this short and sweet... Upon hearing that it was going to take a week for the parts to arrive, I asked immediately for a rental. Their response: "We don't have a loaner or rental program".

So I politely replied "So you guys don't have a problem stranding customers when customer service becomes difficult or expensive? Is that how your customer service works?" The service tech didn't have an answer for this (because it's true) and said he would "escalate" the issue. A little later I got a call that confirmed they wouldn't do anything. I called Chrysler Care and detailed the situation to them. That got the ball rolling.

Ultimately after a few hours of hassle, Chrysler Care provided a rental through the dealership through Hertz.

Being polite but firm and not backing down along with calling Chrysler Care worked for me. I don't have any extra warranty.

Same experience here with the sound. I was told it was normal, even though I didn't believe that an engine should sound like that. Ultimately, like everyone else on this thread who has had a head replaced, I was right.

When I would start my jeep up, it sounded like mechanical failure imminent bad. Driving along a highway wall or a building, it sounded like mechanical failure imminent bad.

Seems like it doesn't it? On the positive side at least the failures are being repaired and we aren't seeing much of a return rate. Before I got a CEL the dealer told me that the sound is coming from the injectors, but the right side of the engine did not have the same "injector" noise that the left side did. I didn't bother arguing with the tech as I am not a mechanic.

However if I were the tech and knew about this issue, I wouldn't feel it was right to intentionally lie to customers. And I do believe that there is an element of dishonesty on the part of Chrysler and the dealers concerned.

I have 1025 miles now and didn't notice this ticking until last week. If this sounds like what you started with I'm headed to the dealer!
I had the same noise, i realized every time i would engage the clutch it would do it for about 30 seconds. Haven't taken it to Chrysler yet but it doesn't seem to be messing with my performance at all. Just hope its not something bad, although i don't think it is.

It's a 2012 JKUR with an April 2012 build date.

This whole thing is unfortunate because I REALLY like this vehicle and had planned to keep it for a very long time. Now I am wondering if I will have to sell it before the 5 year warranty runs out. If I do I regrettably will not be purchasing another Jeep (Chrysler product) again.

I hear ya, and agree. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to these things and have been holding off for quite a while now. Now I read about a few 2013's with the problem and it has me really scratching my head. The good news is this is a vehicle I want, not something I need, so waiting doesn't bother me at all. I've been learning a lot, met some good people here, and the worst case is I buy an older 4.0L JWrangler and slowly build it into something that suits me.

Some get a CEL and never lose mpg, others don't get a CEL and lose mpg's. It's unpredictable. See the post above about mpg's improving after the head replacement.

When I stay off the gas completely I still can't get 14mpg. When I try keep up with traffic I get less than 13. No other explanation for that other than something wrong with the motor. My tick isn't extremely loud, though it gets louder the harder & hotter you run the motor. Can't hear it from the cab though.

They mentioned a rental car.. So I'm sure it'll be at least one day.

Mot of that time your Jeep will be sitting around waiting to get on a rack. Replacement shouldn't take long to do.
