A big dealer will have a pallet of heads, that about 30 heads.

My head issue cropped up a few weeks ago about two days before I was leaving to go on vacation. They didn't have the head in stock so it wasn't going to get fixed in time for me to take on the trip. They did provide me with a brand new Dodge Durango for 11 days free of charge and I had no extended warranty, so I can't complain. So far the repair seems to be a success but I've only had it a few days. No perceivable difference in power or mileage than before. For those concerned about a rental while their rig is being repaired I advise you to insist on a rental for as long as it takes. I'm convinced the service managers have a lot of leeway in this area BUT you might have to make a ruckus to get what you want if you have a special circumstance like mine.

So I made it for 14,840 miles problem free, didn't even hear ticking. Jeep had no noticeable power loss, gas consumption change etc... Then last Thursday got a code. Didn't check the code for the next few days thinking probably gas cap. Then curiosity finally got the better of me. Did the turn the key three times thing to get the code and there was only one. Code was a P0302 (cylinder 2 misfire). Took it to the dealer yesterday morning and just told them about the code. Didn't say I knew about the head issue or the TSB recommending a update of the ECM etc... Just wanted to see how they would handle it. Got a call 4 hours later and they said they are going to replace the head. Guy actually seemed a little embarrassed, apologetic etc... I told him I knew about the issue and he seemed to be relieved. Parts are in stock and he said by Thursday at the latest ill get it back.
Thanks everyone on here for all you advice.

If they only replace one side head won't ot have a different compression ratio than the other side?

Today is day 5 and still no update from Jeep..

It depends on how many miles the vehicle has on it. I always changed heads in pairs on V-type engines. But its warranty work so they are only going to fix what's broken.

According to the work order my #2 cylinder was only at 40%. Anyway go the Jeep back and no noticeable difference but obvious it needed doing based on readings.

If #2 was bad, its compression ratio may be different but otherwise the compression ratio will stay consistent across the engine within normal variations.

That's true but doesn't the mileage on the engine play into it? I'd say low miles doesn't matter much, but as the engine ages and miles accumulate I think doing both heads is doing a better job. At least that's how I was taught and how I've done it with V-type engines. But once again, the warranty contract only covers what's broken. So you really don't have a choice unless you want to pay to swap the other head, or put up one hell of a fight. Opinions vary.

I kinda stopped checking this thread. So...no more AC heads? It seems like a couple might have popped up with possible issues, but then nothing.

I have a general question about the ticking, is the ticking consistent or do you hear it when you first start the car when its cold. . Cause I started my car and it had a ticking noise for about 2 seconds and went away, something I have never heard. Is that how it starts? My jeep has 6866 miles 2012

The start up ticking/clatter you hear is normal. The noise subsides once oil pressure builds up in the engine. The ticking that some owners have is constant, once the engine is up to operating temp. The constant tick may or may not be a sign of head issues. Some people have no tick, but still throw a code. Unless you throw a code, I wouldn't worry about it.

Normal for this engine perhaps but not normal. Ticking / clatter on start up is normally a sign of a worn aged engine, or one that hasn't been started for weeks or even months.

Going to be taking mine in for an oil change and have them check it. Just hit 25k miles and have had a ticking for about the last 3k or so. At first I thought it was an exhaust leak, but then thought it would be best to get it checked regardless. No CEL code though.

My local dealership would not touch my Jeep unless a check engine light came on... But I hope yours is different.
I dropped mine off last week on Monday and I still haven't had a single call from them. I tried calling them but they forward it to voice mail anf they never reply to my calls... Kinda odd.
At least they are paying my rental and they gave me a fully loaded 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee so I'm not complaining.

That's what I'm hoping. I've seen a couple people say they got replacements even without a code.

I had a 500 mile trip today lol
I called my service guy and he put me on hold for ten minutes then sent me to voice mail so I called back and he said he was checking what was going on if I can hold again then he sent me to voice mail again.. And then when I called back "he wasn't in at the moment" a lady said so i called back about two hours later and he put me on hold again... Then voice mail.

Im worried now... What if they wrecked my Wrangler or something... Its been a week since I took it in and not one single call from them... No update... No estimated time of completion... I just dropped it off last week and they handed me a rental. The end.

If the dealership is close, just pop by and look in their service yard. I wouldn't be worried. I had the same issues because it's really difficult to get priority rack time.

My 2012 Sport was starting to show symptoms of the problem at 10K miles. Traded it for a 2013 Rugged Brown Pearl JKU Sport. I love it.

This may be a question for a mechanic out there that has worked on these head problems and also one I'm pretty sure has not been asked. Lets say you have the bad head and nothing has happened yet. Is there a driver style or habit etc that could totally avoid problem from ever occurring? Basically one or more of the valves is sticking at some point in time right?

I'm over 25K miles and I don't have the issue that I'm aware of. I'd like to hear from other high mileage JK's with the 3.6 that don't have any problems.
