You have a 5 year or 100,000 miles powertrain warranty, whichever comes first. So don't let 40,000 miles bother you. If you go without any trouble until the end of the powertrain warranty, then trade it in at that time if your worried about getting caught with an issue.

Just curious on how an intake manifold gasket could cause an oil leak? There shouldn't be oil leaking from your intake manifold. If so, your going to be producing a nice smoke screen behind you.

That's what I was thinking, unless the valve cover is leaking?

I read somewhere on the JK forum about some people having issues with low coolant after head replacement. I just checked the level on my reservoir and it's well below the minimum line. Where did the coolant go? Anyone else have this issue? I can't find the thread on here about this issue.

On the shop floor when head replaced and not replenished, just had my water pump replaced and checked it was dry in the resivore and took almost a gallon between radiator and resivore.

Yes that could be a possibility but I got an alignment check at Firestone right after I got my Jeep back and was advised that all my fluid levels were fine except for windshield washer reservoir and they filled it for me. Unless they don't really check what they say...

My guess is that after a head replacement the cooling system was not properly evacuated of air. While driving those air pockets made their way out which brought the reservoir level down.

Top it off and call it a day. If it drop again then you have reason for concern.

Exactly. It seems to me they're not bleeding the system properly and as the air escapes the level drops. Once topped up it should be fine, if it continues to drop there's a leak somewhere that needs to be addressed.

Depends on year! 13 takes OAT, dealer used Chevron DexCool in mine after water pump and flush. I was concerned and did some research, it is OAT.

Mine is a 2012. I had the head replaced in June. I'm sorry, what is OAT? What brand do you suggest I buy at the auto parts store?

Thanks.

Just wanted to update you all on my status:

2012, don't recall build date.

Head replaced with another AA head at 9000 miles. Currently have 22,000 miles and no problems. Keeping my fingers crossed...

2012 uses HOAT. You want Zerex G-05 meeting specification Chrysler MS9769, or you can get the OEM HOAT at the dealership. The Zerex is only available at high end auto parts stores like Carquest and NAPA, not at el-cheapo places like Auto Drone or Derp Boys. Accept no substitutes.

Alright I thought I was in the clear. Build date 5/12/12. Just got a P0300 code on Monday at 14,500 miles.
Dealer took it in today and did a "flash update". I notified the service writer of the 2012 problems and he said if it pops a code again it will get a new head.

2012 wrangler sport. misfire cyl #2. After reading the posts I took it to the dealer. They didn't try and send me back out. Gave me a rental checked it out, said it is the left head, acknowledged it was a problem in the period when mine was manufactured and replaced it under warranty. With 52,000 they still covered it under drivetrain warranty so no deductible. No complaints here.

Dang man. 52k before it popped. That's evidence right there that a lot of people who drive < 10k/year will be out of warranty before it fails.

Thank you for this information
I work for "Auto Drone" and did not know this. Looks like a lot of newer Chrysler vehicles use it huh.

So I'm now joining the club with my 2012 at the dealer now for a drivers side head replacement. Makes me nervous for future reliability. Does anyone know what is different about the new head design? So now I would have one new design head and one old. Am I on borrowed time until the old one on the other side goes bad too? And is my new one likely some remanufactured POS? I use my jeep in remote places and this makes me uneasy. Anyone put on any serious miles like 75k+ after head replacement?

The only thing we know for sure is that they "made the head more robust." Rumors are improved materials for the valve seats and better cooling. The driver's side head runs about 100 degrees hotter because it's at the end of the coolant flow. This is probably a contributing cause. Very few reported failures on the passenger side.

My dealer promised me my replacement was brand new, but my guess is, with 400 replacements a week, they are remanufactured.

I don't think anyone on here has 70k miles on their 2012. I'm sure there are a lot of fleet vehicles out there that do. I have put on 16k miles on my replacement head and it runs better than new.

Well finally got mine taken in today. Told the service manager about the CEL and code for Cylinder 2 misfire. He immediately said "yep, we are gonna have to keep it over the weekend and replace the head. I am sure you read all about it on the Internet. We have been replacing these like crazy for the past year. " he told me they stock the part and would have it done the beginning of next week. Here's hoping it gets done right.

CEL came on at 26,500 miles. Gave to dealership (Byers Jeep), reported as a P0304 and gave back. 24 hours later, light comes back on. Guess I'll see what's next.

I think there is something to high temps as well my code went off after a four hour drive to Bullhead AZ. The temp there was 115 degrees. I went to check the oil and the dip stick was so I couldn't even touch it with my bare hand.

Sitting at the dealer right now. Waiting to see what my tick is. I know its not an exhaust leak because the tick gets faster not louder.

So my check engine light came on last Sunday. I checked the codes myself P0306 misfire cylinder 6. Its been ticking for well over 10k miles. I'm at 16800 miles now. I don't think its really gotten any worse, but it had been getting a progressively worse stumble at a stoplight. My light came on when I fired it up luke warm in my garage after being parked for a few hours. The weekend before I did take it ove a steep grade twice in 100* heat so that may have finished it off but I do use 91 anytime I wheel or go over a grade. Oddly enough monday the light went out.

Wednesday I took it into Champion Jeep here in Downey CA. Service advisor was awesome, wrote it up. By that afternoon they said it needed a head and had it in stock. I was put in a rental at Chryslers expense and it was done Thursday. They also said they reprogram the ECU to make the fans come on sooner.

After I picked it up the ticking was gone. My understanding is the head comes complete cams and lifters. Idle is smooth again, seems to have a tad more power and I will see on the mileage. I checked over everything under hood and everything is clean, routed correctly and looks like its never been apart. Big thanks to the crew at Champion Jeep service department!

Wow lucky you man. My dealership would not put me in a rental and told me that Chrysler doesn't offer it. Luckily they only had my Jeep since last Friday and over the weekend and promised me I would have it tomorrow the latest. If it takes any longer I am going to throw a fit and take it up with the local Chrysler rep to see if I can get a rental.

Really though I just hope that it gets repaired correctly. That is the main thing. I want my Jeep back in tip working order. :-)

I had my 2012 in For check eng. light, it also would drop RPM's when under 2k on tach. They first said it was some Cam sensors but changed there story and said it was the battery... I'm calling B.S.- but no issues sense them and it has 19k on the motor

You have to call and lay into Jeep. Once they confirm diagnosis with the service advisor you will get a rental. I did this last time it was in and I got one this time. I think its shitty they don't just offer one up.

If the cams/lifters were not on your repair summary sheet, I believe they re-used your old ones. We've had a few techs say that they swap the old parts over in most circumstances.
