Hmmmmm. Good to know there is a good Jeep dealership in MN that has experience replacing heads. I bought mine at Park Chrysler Jeep in Burnsville, but live in the north metro. That being said, I haven't had any real need for warranty work(knock on wood). I hope my AB head holds out.

17k miles on my April 12 JK Sport. Was jumping my wife's car last night and noticed the infamous tick. Waiting patiently for it to go out...

Could be a while mine went at 23k and ticked for a long time before that

Has anyone had repeat problems with the replacement head? Just bought a 2012 sahara and the head has already been replaced

Yes some of the early 2012's that had heads replaced with either an AA head or AB head did have the job done a second time in some instances. It was discussed in this thread although it is difficult to find.

Does anyone have a feel for percentage failures on the early models? I have an August-11 build and 28K miles. No ticking or CELs so far

Good question, since mine is also an August-11 build and I too have 28K miles with no ticking or CEL. There's some who claim that *all* the heads of that vintage will have the problem eventually. We'll see.

I threw the code and had my drivers side head replaced at 28,000. I haven't noticed any ticking until a few weeks ago. I am now at 62,000 (I know...DD turned into a weekly commuter for the time being) and have noticed that when starting cold there is a significant tick/knock until the engine gets up to operating temp and then it smooths out. Any ideas if the two are related or do I have something else going on now.

startup tick is considered normal and not related

Did you change oil recently? Or are you running a heavier oil than recommended? I find that startup tick is related to a number of variables on my Jeep, mostly oil though. My Jeep ticks less with Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic 5w30, more with Mobil 1 5w30, and even more with Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 5w30, and the tick seems to be loudest just after I put the oil in before it gets a chance to thicken up a bit (most synthetics use pour point depressants rather than viscosity enhancers to get their rating, and thus unlike most conventional oils get thicker as they "wear").

Hi all - got my 2012 JK back yesterday. The dealer was cagey, but seems to have done a great job very quickly. I got them to pay for the rental car (just 1.5 day, since that's all the job took) and replace the transmission coolant tube (known recall for 2012) update the ECU and do a checkup, all for free under warranty. i checked the paperwork and the new head does indeed end in "AC" - most notably the ticking sound is gone - which was present the very day I bought the jeep, and was sold as "Normal for the new Pentastar." My mileage is about 27k.

Also worth noting - I just took it on a work trip today, where my gas mileage has gone from about 14.5-15.5 (Original head, with CEL on, Misfire P0304) - back to when I purchased the Jeep of 19-21mpg on the highway.

My issue after replacement is my antifreeze keeps disappearing every month and the dealer finds no leaks and the head passes all pressure and leak down tests. I dug deeper into this and found not only members here but also on other forums having the same issue after a head replacement. I figured my dealer sucked at replacing the head so I called another reputable dealer nearby who told me they would need to do a pressure tests but would likely find nothing as they have customers with the same issue after AC ahead replacements. I have a case open with Chrysler but they have no answers yet.

I talked to a supplier we use for bare cylinder head castings. I was hoping to find out what Chrysler did to upgrade the head from the aa to ab to the AC versions. They weren't sure, as those heads aren't available yet. I'm suspicious that, along with an alloy change for the guides and seats, they did some additional machining to improve heat transfer. I stress this is only a guess, but that may have caused a porosity issue on some heads. They'll become available eventually, once more heads are out of warranty, and I'll find out then.

If yours goes bad at that mileage you will have the "HIGH MILE" trophy. Right now I have it at 45K miles for a head replacement. Mine never really ticked. Sounds the same now as then. Good luck but you probably are in the clear. If not let us know.

The antifreeze is going somewhere, it has to be. Here's a few possibilities for where it could be going. It is either leaking internally into the oil, leaking into a cylinder and getting blown out the exhaust, or leaking externally. It could be hitting something hot externally and burning off making it harder to detect. They should do a used oil analysis along with pressure testing the system, to see if it is going into the oil, at that rate the oil level would be rising though. But if it's getting blown out the exhaust it might be tricking them. Anti-freeze doesn't vanish on a monthly basis.

Add another P0304 to the list. Just a tick (no pun intended) over 20K miles. Engine hasn't sounded any different since day 1 besides cold start up...maybe it was there the whole time and I didn't notice? It threw the code on Tuesday night. Wednesday morning I was going to take it in and the light was off. Drove it another 70 miles and it came back on. Took it in this morning and new head on the way. Dealership said it's the first JK/P-star that had the issue, but, they have seen it on other vehicles and knew exactly what to look for.

I had my 2012 JK Sahara driver's side head replaced in June. Now that you've mentioned it, I've had to add coolant twice since then. No other apparent leaks. I'll just mention the issue the next time in for service, just to get it on record.

As much as I like my current JK, I'll trade it in for a 2015 next November when the BTB warranty runs out. I figure that'll give me more time to see if the current fix on '12's holds out on mine and others and if any heads fail on 2013/2014 models. I sure hope the AC head is the permanent fix.

Final popped the P304 code. And the dealership is actually saying there is an issue. Jeep goes in tomorrow. Wish me luck...

Just had my head replaced after 33K miles. After pickup, I now hear a liquid sloshing sound. I've read a few threads about it but what I can't figure out is if this is an issue that will clear up on it's on or if I need to swing back by the dealership to address the problem. Any ideas?

My 2012 is in garage right now for head replacement.. ticking has never been a problem for mine. Just the CEL constantly.. been fighting with dealer for 8 months and 9000 miles later its getting replaced. They also replaced my steering wheel buttons, got tired of pushing the menu button 5 times to see my mpg!
