My CEL came on Friday evening, I took it into my dealership today. They said it needs a head replacement and ordered parts. They told me they will call when parts come in, schedule the work and have a loaner waiting for me as long as needed and there will be no cost to me whatsoever.

I've never heard any ticking, so was a little surprised by the diagnosis. I have noticed it idling a little rougher over the past couple weeks. I just hit 22,000 miles, JKU is a 2012 and was delivered to me on 2-29-12.

The dealership here is amazing, we have bought many cars from them and even purchased a Mazda the same day we ordered the Jeep. I'm not concerned about the replacement or any issues that may come up after, I know they do quality work and will take care of it. I can't believe some of the stories I've read in regards to bad dealerships, I feel very lucky to have Cole Chrysler here

As much as I was hoping to avoid this issue my 2012 Rubicon popped a p0302 code this morning with just under 23k miles on it. I've had the ticking sound for at least 15k miles, and I've noticed my gas mileage has been steadily declining for a few months even though I haven't been driving it any differently.

Took it to the dealer immediately and they confirmed the Cylinder 2 Misfire code and said it needed a new head. Thankfully they already had all the parts in stock and said they could have it finished tomorrow. I was really dreading this repair after reading some of the horror stories some of you have had to deal with, but it sounds like mine will be relatively painless.

I'll have to keep an eye on the coolant level after I get it back. Are those of you having the disappearing coolant issue getting a message on the dash, or just noticing the level is decreasing by looking at the reservoir?

I had the driver's side head replaced in June. I noticed the missing coolant by looking at the coolant reservoir. Anybody with a replaced head should at least look weekly at the reservoir to make sure that it's not low.

I just had another cel come on Thursday night. I'm taking it to the dealer on Monday to check it out. I hope it's something simple. The Jeep runs fine otherwise.

I hope this not indicative of things to come...

What head was it replaced with? AC? I haven't been keeping up the past few months.

The AC head was put on in June.

Update: Was at Jeep service today and the CEL that came on was a stored code for the thermostat. Cleared the code and pressure tested and purged the system the system of air bubbles and found no leaks. Checked the thermostat and it is working properly.

Funny thing is the CEL went off yesterday and did not come back on. Hopefully all is well now...

I have a 2012 Wrangler sport. 16,900 miles. PO300 and PO304. I took it in yesterday. All they did was re flash my pcm. They said it needed a software update. Drove out of there 20 miles later MIL came back on. Dropping it off tomorrow.

If the cel was related to the cylinder head issue, the re-flash was a software fix to increase the cylinder misfire threshold. It appears your No.4 cylinder was failing due to high number of misfires. They will likely do a cylinder leak-down test and it should fail that. They'll replace your head. They'll likely replace the cam and lifers if there is unusual wear on them.

Call Chrysler Customer Care Monday morning at 1-877-426-5337 and report the situation. You'll receive a case number. If the dealership balks at giving you a rental car, give them the case number and advise them to call Chrysler Customer Care. It may take a couple days or a week or so, so be patient.

You may also request that the technician, after replacing the head and refilling the coolant, carefully do a purge of air out of the coolant system. Otherwise, you'll need to add coolant later and possibly another cel because of it. That is what I experienced, so I'm trying to spare you some butt-ache later.

You also may want to check to see if your Jeep Wrangler was involved in the Transmission Oil Cooler Tube recall (Recall # N28 / NHTSA 13V-234). They might as well do that if your Jeep was involved in it.

Good Luck.

The Jeep is in today to replace the left side cylinder head. They said it would be done today. I emailed chrysler customer care to get my free loaner for this scheduled day. Dealership didnt want to give me one.

Also getting my recall fixed today.

support center was done via email- Very quick response and there for you.

They didnt want to give me a rental free of charge. They said I didnt have an extended warrranty.

Thats when i emailed chrysler customer care center and quickly it was honored.

Thats sucks.

My 12 Rubi ticks really loud on the left bank and dealer keeps saying it's normal.
Just rolled 9k miles and it's getting louder. I can hear it from inside the cab now.

And, you know that the dealer knows EXACTLY what it is, and that you need a new head...

Do they think we're stupid, are they stupid, or are they (many dealers - not all) just plain crooks?! "It's normal," sheesh....

The dealer isn't always at fault here. Chiseler Corporation won't reimburse them for any warranty expenses until it throws a code, and won't reimburse them for a cylinder head until a leakdown test proves that it's a bad head.

As for "all of the 2012 will do this", I have 30,000 miles on my 2012 with the original heads. As long as it does it before the end of the 100,000 mile warranty, I'm not particularly annoyed.

The 100,000 doesn't come into play. It's the 5 years that gets most people. I only drive 6,000 a year so I have a 30,000 mile warranty. Not sure what I will do if I haven't received a new head by the 5 year point. Maybe sell it.

I would just replace head when it needs it. head replacement is not a big deal and not like it is a big expense. If you only put 6000 miles a year on heck it might be 10-15 years or more before you need a new head. you will have some warning signs so it is not like you will jump in your wrangler one day and the head will implode taking out your whole engine.

33k and counting... ... Still going strong. And I often drive it like I stole it...but..

I need to stay out of this thread! Makes me nervous. It's good to know that dealers seem to be taking good care of everyone now. Good luck everyone.

I have a feeling mine will be traded or mostly likely sold in favor of a diesel Wrangler before this thing craps a head.

I have 37,000 and still original head. It did throw a code of 0300, multiple cyl missfire. dealer says it has to be a 2-4-or 6 missfire to start the head replacement. The code hasnt come back, so I am jsut waiting. I still have 4 years and 63,000 miles to go on warranty.
