I guess I should first apologize before I get started, and don't get me wrong, I would be a proud owner if I had a 2012. It seems that alot of emphases on putting down the 3.8 was used to sell the 2012s. After a few bolt ons, a plug in, and some re-gearing (coming soon), I'll be ready to re-educate a few 3.8 haters. After all its only money!

Sorry I couldn't resist

I read a few pages of this thread and it has me freaking, as I had my heart dead-set on a brand new Rubicon Unlimited. Any issues with vehicles with build dates later than those specified by the people having issues?

I scoured the Net and didn't find much in terms of issues with Wranglers, but came across quite a few comments regarding issues in the Durango, Chrysler 200, Chargers, and some in the Grand Cherokee.

I have a 12/11 build date on my 12 2 door and at 5k miles the tick is getting worse. My mom has a 12 GC with the 3.6 her build date is 1/12 and at 4k her motor is smooth as butter. When I find a dealer that i trust to work on mine Ill even bring in the GC in case they say"you idiot they all sound that way".

Sounds like Chrysler should be taking larger steps to rectify these issues. Their bread and butter is this engine. This could determine whether they sink or swim.

Thats what was wrong with mine, but the number two was "missing", and yes had to replace heads and gaskets. National back order is correct. Been in my rental car for 2 weeks now, heard they got the heads and should have mine back on monday or tuesday. Will repost and let ya'll know how she runs!

Good luck keep us posted!

What concerns me is if the heads are on a national back order then did they stop production of the engines too? Or are they using up the old inventory and dealing with new issues as they come in. I know a couple of people holding off on their purchases of Chrysler vehicles until they are confident the issue has been resolved. No one I know is certain yet, and holding off on buying. It's a shame, Chrysler has a nice product line.

I've said it before.... If you want a Jeep go ahead and get one. However, make sure the build date is after Dec 11. I've have yet to hear of any with the tick with a build date after Dec. If someone has one then post up.

My wife's 12 Overland is ready to pick up this afternoon. She had to have both heads replaced (build date 9-11 7K miles) it was so bad. My 12 JKUS (build date 9-11 3.8K miles) goes in on Wed. to have the head ordered again. We have been through it all from cam phasers to ECU Flashes to oil changes and back again. If the heads don't do it I will grab some beer and contemplate the purchases we made.

Want a funny part to our horrible story??? So there we were...Picking up the wife's rental last week, a '12 Dodge Journey. The guy brought it around so we can inspect it and all I could hear was tick, tick, tick. I asked the guy if it was a 3.6? He didn't know so we popped the hood and low and behold there sat a 3.6 just ticking away with 7K on the odometer. So I bet him a coke it had a build date betwen Jul-Dec '11. Sure enough... build date 10-11. Good Coke though...

The bad part is when you walk in to the rental car place and you have been there so many times they know your name. Even worse and humiliating is when they say "Wow! Your Jeep is broken again?" Just sucks ass!

I'm curious how those of you who have gotten heads replaced without a check engine light got help from your dealers. I have a bad tick from the left side of the motor that the service advisor acknowledged but had his hands ties by the regional rep from Chrysler. They told me to wait another 5k and "see if a cel comes on". I'm not happy. My Jku has almost 7k on it and the noise isn't getting better. I also work as a mechanic so I know this thing is mechanical. Problem for me is I bought a car with a warranty so I don't have to work on my own car.

Yep. I have seen 2 or 3 so far just lightly perusing the forums with born on dates in January. Either this motor is just very noisy or else Chrysler has a HUGE problem on their hands with these things eating heads. There's even a few in here that started ticking again after a head replacement. These ticks might be nothing to be concerned about long term though but since Chrysler is fixing them in droves with replacement heads it makes me think that we will see a RASH of engine failures on Chrysler products with this engine in the next few years.

The heads aren't on "restriction". Chrysler is compiling all of the info they get from the dealers to see what the issue is and until then, they don't want dealers just "throwing " parts on a problem if that isn't the fix. Doesn't help Jeeps standing with initial quality if the Jeep keeps coming back.

Got a chance to speak to the shop forman today. We haven't replaced any heads but I guess we have replaced a few cam phasers. I have the tick on mine but it hasn't thrown any codes or CELs so I'm going to let it be.

Me too, and I hope everyone with 3.6 problems is helped and everything is resolved.

I remember the abuse I took when buying a 2011 with a 3.8 just before the new engine was released. However, I'd been through this before when Ford released their 4.0 SOHC engine. It took 3 or 4 years for all of the 4.0 SOHC problems to surface (developed with miliage).

Thanks for the info Pay. Please keep us informed as to what the final resolution is and when Chrysler has the problem fixed moving forward. It seems the build date with vehicles effected with this problem is now including some vehicles with January build dates. There are a few people I know including myself that are holding off because of this.

my 12 has no engine issues and my 08 jku doesn't leak oil. seems like its the luck of the draw on both engines.

I'm with Pat. (i.e. let Chrysler document the problem, offer a resolution, and go from there.) However, this needs to be resolved and handled professionally, ASAP. If not, the issue has the potential to be a deal breaker for Chrysler's various brands or dare i say branding. Everyone got behind Chrysler to help them get on their feet, including their workforce. I know what i want in my rubi but I'll order it when Chrysler steps up to the plate, (again.)

I'm in a super-tough spot. My wife and I were recently involved in a car accident and I don't have a vehicle. I have/had my heart set on a 2012 Rubicon. I've had my heart set on one since 2010. This is pretty disappointing because it's what I really want. Now, I'm scared to death to buy one.

My wife puts 120 miles per day on her car driving back and forth to work, and she runs through cars every 3 years or so. That means I could get something else but it's going to be a long while before I get a Rubicon. I do NOT want to wait 5-7 years to get a Rubicon. It's what I want, and that's the ONLY vehicle I want; not a 2012 STi, Evo, Camaro, Mustang, 370Z, blah blah blah...I want a damned Rubicon.

Sure, people are saying, "Just go buy it," but I'm not so sure I wanna shell out $35,000+ and chance dealing with this bs.

Perhaps you can buy a car she takes over in a year or two or until you feel comfortable buying the Rubi?

While i have bo ticking or codes I have to admit I am worried myself. I have a sept build 2012 and i hope it was a bad batch and not bad design. I have a forester which had head gaskets go bad every 40,000 miles. They only replaced once under warranty but it failed three times.

That being said, she sure makes me happy EVERY DAMN TIME I GET IN HER. Especially when I can put the top down!!!!!

One - what you read in the forums about the ticking sounds is like hell is freezing over. Remember, people without problems don't post that everything's fine. Don't base your decision on what you read here.
Two - a lot of Jeeps are being sold. A lot. Some will crap out, most will not.
Three - Chysler is fixing the one's that break.

Get what you want and enjoy the ride. Peope who are afraid to cross the street are stuck in their house forever

Good points, but I don't wanna be the guy Chrysler decides to hang out to dry. In the past, they haven't been the best about dealing with warranty claims.

In the end, I'll probably get one anyway and just cross my fingers...

Give yourself credit for checking it out so carefully. If I had put as much work into picking my wife as I did the Jeep, I'd...

Never mind

Haha! Yeah, I put a lot of time into picking the right wife, too!

I have a dealer working on locating a silver one for me but I may go back and tell him I wanna order, as that will guarantee a later build date.

I have been following this thread for a while now. I took delivery of my 2012 JKU Rubicon on 4/11. The build date is 3/27 and I don't have any ticking. It runs great with about 300 miles on it so far. I guess time will tell.

Awesome! Built on my bday!

I just got word back from the insurance company on what I'll be getting for the car (can't discuss anything...attorney advised against it) but I'll have a down-payment within the next week. I'll lose my rental car once I receive the check so I gotta move on it.

It's gonna be tough finding exactly what I want, because what I want is, well, nothing. I want the Connectivity Group, Dual Tops, Tow Package, and a manual transmission. Then, there's the issue of the Pentastars kicking the bucket in the early 2012 models and trying to find something with a later build date.

I have a feeling I'm going to wind up being forced to order...

"Kicking the bucket"??? I have one built on July 27th, the earliest I've seen, and not had any issues. Sure the motor makes noise but nothing like described here. My wife's 3.8L in our '06 Grand Caravan knocks much louder especially at start up.

Don't forget, there have been ZERO failures! Only a noise!

I'd call needing new heads a failure.

Mine sounds like it has a hole in the exhaust near the head on the drivers side....

What am I doing about it?

I took it in once to have it documented. Told it was "normal".

In May we're taking a 7000 mile road trip in the Jeep.

Hacuna matata....

That is a good point to keep in mind...nevertheless, like many have indicated, I'd be pissed if mine started ticking and required downtime for a head replacement...it's just not right. If you really need to buy A 2012, go for it. if not, I'd personally wait a few months at least. I think the inherent design of the engine is sound but they just need to workout this bug. I've purchased many new vehicles both foreign and domestic over the past 20 years and have learned to shy away from 1st year anything..especially engines and transmissions...regardless of what other vehicles may have successfully used these components in the past....I do look forward to getting a '13 though!

Well, I wish I had some more options. When does ordering open up for 2013 models? I may consider holding out and try to get this steaming heap of Camaro running. It's just that I'm in a real pinch because I don't have a running vehicle at the moment.

My job requires extended trips in the car and with summer coming up I'm not only going to need a running vehicle but one with a/c. My Camaro neither runs, nor has a working a/c.
