Until Chrysler does something I don't think that extra special head will come off. The passenger side sounds just as loud, so that's why I dismissed it before. The local dealers don't want to take any initiative around here. It generally takes 2-3 trips to get anything fixed. I leave negative feedback all the time and it doesn't get fixed. My SRT is going in for attempt 3 to fix my interior squeak.
Yeah, Ford is the same way. No TSB, no problem. Apparently we're all f$$$ing nuts for know whats going on with our vehicles. The trans in my F150 shifts so hard it could knock your teeth out. According to the dealer "well, there's no TSB on it, so that's a normal characteristic of the vehicle".....my lawyer doesn't seem to think so either.

Any way of telling whether the defective engines are coming from Trenton, MI or Saltillo, Mexico?

IIRC, no 2012 wrangler engines from Mexico plant, so far.

The first video in this tread is from my 2012 Cosmos JKUR. I made it on a cold start. I posted it on YouTube to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problem. I don't own the Jeep anymore because my dealer refused to fix it. Sure will be interesting if Chrysler will step up or not. My build date was 8/11. The JKUR I traded it in on has the exact same build date.

Thats the same time mine was built. Honestly the the noise dosent even bother
me, the fact that it can let go and leave me stranded does.

Riggsie I think that was your video I posted on this thread. If it was... Thanks! It was the tipping factor on taking mine in. Now they have it and I'm hoping they are willing to fix it. I'll get a lawyer if I have to but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. Chrysler has to know about this by now I would think....

You are most welcome. Here is the crapper, I was so early with hearing the noise I didn't even think about build date when I traded my first 2012 for the 2012 I have now. What complicated my situation was Chrysler bought back my 2011 because it had a engine failure. The dealer didn't want to touch the Cosmos JKUR with a ten foot pole. I would really like to figure out if there is a way to identify Jeeps with this problem as having something in common other than the noise. A 35,000 plus vehicle should not sound like this.

My wife's Overland Summit (3.6L) is perfectly quiet. I found some folks complaining about the same noise in Challengers and Chargers with the 3.6L.

Just from reading the posts on this thread it seems like more Jeeps with the noise are Cosmos blue. Anybody else see it that way?

Deep Cherry Red JK here. Build sheet shows 7-29-11, I also have my insight status updates printed out at home somewhere so I will check those out tonight. I followed the original thread where Riggsie originally posted his video for a bit but it seemed like most people were pointing their finger at the wrong oil or the idea that they all have a tick. Strangely enough mine started(or i first noticed it) right after my first oil change, and sure enough the dealer lube center showed they used the wrong oil. They went back and redid the oil change no questions asked to see if it would clear up the tick. Oil change didn't work so it finally went in last week for the service department to look at. Dropped it off about 7:30 Monday morning and by 10:00am they had called me and told me that the service tech and service manager both thought the noise was out of spec and that they had even pulled a 2012 off the lot to compare it to. They said the drivers side bank on mine was definitely louder to the point of something being wrong/off. Then over the course of last week Chrysler had them do the following. First change the oil again, then do a series of oil pressure test, inspect the "lifters", and replace 2 lifters that showed a little bit of abnormal wear. The tick is still there and Chrysler had them order a new timing chain tensioner, which is apparently on national back order. So that's where it stands right now. I'll dig out my insight sheets tonight to get an exact build date and keep everyone posted on what I hear back.

Well I have build date 8/11 JKUR that I picked up in Sept last year. Noticed the engine making a bit more noise than new lately....

After seeing this thread and the you tube vid's(thanks) it appears that my beloved long waited for JKUR has the dreaded tick..

To say I'm pissed is an understatement.

Edit to add that I have approx 8K miles.

Went by and got a build date 11SEP11. Didn't know that until today, but it's pretty cool!

WTF is with all this national back order $h1t on parts for these things? That is totally unacceptable. I would be pissed if the dealer told me that and would expect a nice high quality rental in the interim and not a crappy econobox.

Well now I'm PO! Just spoke with the service department and they started a "Star" something or rather. They all agree mine is jacked up but have to wait on Chrysler to say fix it. They know it's broken, they know they HAVE to fix it but now the run around begins. They told me I may have to drive it a while until Chrysler resolves this crap. I expected more from Chrysler! Especially when this Jeep is $39K! This isn't some $10K Kia I have. This had better get resolved quick, fast and in a hurry!!!

The heads are on national back order, but strangley enough, my heads, head gasket and new lifter arrived at the dealership today. I should have it by Friday, so I will let ya'll know if the damn ticking is gone.

Jeepinuse, I had to go through the same thing. They had to start a "case" on my Jeep, but on the good side of things, it documents the problem even further. The more documentation, the less likely Chrysler can back out of fixing the problem.

Taken today - lifter is for the number two cylinder exhaust valve, closest to the firewall.

Interesting....is the lifter looser then the others in the bore or show abnormal wear?

The National Back Order may not necessarally mean that Chrysler does not have enough parts in their warehouses. It could be that they are holding all of the parts and releasing them only after a thorough inspection has been made and the parts found to be good. It would be horrible if they shipped bad parts and you had the same failure down the road.

Good Luck to Everyone Involved!

My Grand Cherokee has been in the shop for 32 straight days now and is still not fixed even with an engineer coming from Germany to try and solve the problem. If my Rubicon develops this problem, I think I may be done with Chrysler for good.
