Interesting read through this thread. I only have 180 miles on mine (Production 11/11 or 12/11), and I haven't heard any ticking noises. However, I also haven't tried to listen for one. I think many people here will hear some slight valve/injector noise and think something is wrong. I wouldn't get too paranoid - the videos posted are clearly very loud ticking noises where something is wrong. Some noise from the engine is normal, especially during break in.

Regarding Chrysler warranty, on my SRT/10 Viper, I had a very loud 3rd gear noise unpon deceleration while in gear. At first I thought it was an electrical issue, as it sounded like an electrical whine, but it was traced back to the 3rd gear in the transmission being slightly out of spec. They refused to fix it under warranty because it was still "operating properly". This was of course in 2008/2009 when Chrysler was about to fold, so they didn't want to do any warranty claims.

It almost made me hold off on buying the Wrangler, but I figured I'd give it a shot again anyway.

I should explain my 2011 does not have a head problem (just frustrated at its issues though) but on a WK2 forum I belong to folks had some Pentastars motors made in Mexico that had problems with improperly prepared blocks and some 2011 JGC's have had the head problems so it is nothing new in some Pentastars.

I never get into first year motors for this reason. I hope your problems get solved. Its a shame your having any issues to begin with. Hope the surgery goes well on the ol girl.

Valvetrain/injector noise is normal, this is a distinct "TICK" that can be over heard all other engine noises. You will notice it if you have it on your jeep, dont even have to pop the hood. It seems like the later in the year production jeeps are in the clear.

Hmm, but is it a tick or a knock? I never paid much attention to ticking, and now that you mention it I noticed a valve train type ticking when in the drive through at the bank the other day. It goes away if you give it some gas for a second. So I checked the oil - full and clean at 3100 miles.
I know if it continues or gets louder when you rev it a bit, that is a problem. But I am not worried enough to go buy a Prius or a Quiet Ford...
Love my New JK!

I agree with you completely. All I was saying is that some people will see this thread, then go out to their car and notice valve/injector noise and think something is wrong.

All parts came in today including new head assembly. #2 cylinder valve bad. Service guy told me Chrysler's story is that a "few" got through with bad #2 valves. These are sticking, building up with carbon and causing the misfire code. Folks if your engine light comes on. Go that day to your nearest dealer. Also my first trip there I was told a computer update was needed they reset it. It came back on 2 days later and this was the result.

well the doge came back still squeaking. I just don't know of a service department I'd trust to replace the head on my Jeep if need be. Does anyone know of a great service department in MD??

Exactly why are people like this on the forum? When I joined it was to get good information about something I love. Jeeps! The good unfortunately sometimes comes with a little bad, people come here to be better informed to eliminate the bad. How does a post like this help?

So I just want to chime in here. Some of the comments could be misconstrued by some who don't know much about cars. To be clear, there is a very distinct ticking sound that comes from the fuel injectors on most vehicles, and that is not a problem whatsoever. Injector ticking can be hard to distinguish from real mechanical problems, e.g., a bad valve or lifter.

From what I am gathering in this thread, the folks who have had real issues have had very, very noticeable noises coupled with check engine lights, right? So I do think it's worth noting that if your '12 is making some moderate ticking noises and doesn't have a check engine light or other obvious mechanical malfunction, you are probably ok.

Another thing I'd note is just ... look at the bright side. This seems to be a pretty concrete failure mode that happens very early on in the life cycle of the engine, and Chrysler seems to have already worked out a fix. Yeah, it sucks, but it could suck a lot worse. Google "6.0 Ford diesel" if you don't believe me!

I guess what I'm saying is, it seems likely that if you have this problem it will develop very early in your warranty period and be resolved under warranty. Or at least from what we know to this point, that seems to be the case.

Also, I'd like to add that my 2 door with 4.10's, pentastar and a six speed ... is awesome.

i82much with mine there is no check engine light "yet." Mine was a tick that was louder than the injectors and only on the driver's side. I had an advantage by the wife having the 3.6L in her Overland Summit so I got to listen to both. I agree that no one needs to panic over this thing. However, if you think you have the "tick" and have the time, swing by the dealer and have it checked out. The worst thing that can happen is you get a complaint documented and you can have them start another Jeep or two to hear them. The good thing is it seems right now build dates from Jul 11 -Oct 11 are the ones having this thing.

OTNewt yours sounds louder than mine.

Jeepinuse, I probably mentioned it earlier in the thread, but I have an 11 town and country with almost the same miles as the jeep - damn near the only thing you can hear on that engine is the injectors. We are just lucky with the jeeps!

Mine was made 10-14-11 and there is no noise at all at this point with 1000 miles on the odo. It is 16 degrees out this morning and it sounds good. I use Mobil 1 5-30.

Ya know I went to the dealer for my challenger yesterday and started two wranglers both had the "tick" not as loud as some, but it was there.

I'm not saying by any means anyone is incorrect on the issues with the head, but it got me thinking.... This is almost the same motor as the other applications, but with slight differences to use in the wrangler. Could these "ticks" just be a trait of this "flavor" or the 3.6L? Mine has had it from day one and felt just as strong today as it did on day one.

This is a new high tech V6 and it might have some sounds and quirks we as consumers just aren't used to hearing.

My build date is 9/11, so I'm just as susceptible as anybody I guess. I dunno. I had a 4.3 Chevy with a ticking noise and even a very mild oil pressure fluctuation of about 2 psi that seemed harmonized with the tick. The dealer wouldn't do anything about it, 80k miles later I had completely forgotten about it, never had a problem, and traded it in on the Jeep.

In this situation, obviously there are some real problems out there. For my part I'm just saying hey, I've got 97k more miles before my warranty expires and it sounds like if I have a problem it should arise well before then. So for now, I'm just going to enjoy my Jeep and worry about it when the time comes.

Kelsey, I had almost the same thought, but really the only difference from the Jeep Wrangler to the other Chrysler vehicles powered by the 3.6 is the intake and alternator placement - little odds and ends. The internals of the engines are the same. Not sure why we are having these issues more, but I have not done my due dilegence on researching other 3.6 powered platforms. I should be picking it up late today or tomorrow, so we'll know if the head replacement was a success...

I've read that these engines are sensitive to oil weight changes. There's obviously very delicate parts in this engine that require super tight tolerances to operate. It can't take much to get this to be a whole different animal compared to the other platforms, so those odds and end while seeming insignificant might add up to a lot. I've noticed they really work on getting the 3.6L quiet in the other applications. In the wrangler they didn't even try, so that could be an affect of what everyone hears.

I have another 94K on my warranty and I'm not going to worry about it. Need to quit reading forums LOL
