his comment "all 4.0's sound like that"
Is it going to be the same for the 3.6? Hope not
I bet it's just a 3.6L noise. Seems to common to be an issue.

Wow that's pretty loud, much louder then mine. Every time I get out of the jeep these days I let it idle and I inspect the sound, both sides hood closed then both sides hood open to see if it gets worse or better(wishful thinking). Tonight it really didn't sound all that bad. I did a little spirited driving by bringing the rpm's up to about 5500 through a few gears and it pulled hard, no hesitation in performance, I was impressed again. Got out and did my sound check and the noise really wasn't that apparent. I had my wife listen and she thinks I'm nuts. I have an appointment for Monday at the dealer but I may cancel it until it sounds as bad as yours.......with all do respect

Dang, you guys have this all wrong. That sounds totally awesome! It sounds like a badda$$ steam locomotive forcefully powering it's way up a mountainside with a full load of coal. My young boys would love that. "Mommy! Mommy! Daddy took us on a chu-chu ride! How come you don't get to drive a chu-chu like daddy?"

Don't think of it as "ticking." Think of it as "locomotion."

I hope my 2012 3.6L (10/11 build) with 1,300 miles starts doing that soon. Look at the bright side.

Honestly, I cant say I'm an ASE worthy mechanic, but Ive pulled some heads before, its just some ticking valves.. is it bs , yeah very.. is it in the end of my 2012 jeep.. hahaa no... has jeep/Chrysler lost my respect.. they are getting there lol.. but thats to Earlie to say for sure .. give them a chance first i say..

but in worst comes to worst... if they wont do anything about it.. then a warranty doesn't exist imo.. and honestly the only reason i haven't ripped the top of my engine apart yet anyhow is because of that stupid warranty.. i would have already respected the valves by now and slap this baby back together and back on the road..

I was on the pre-order bandwagon, mine being built around 7/24. It's always been audible, but doesn't sound quite as loud or intense as some others posting vids. Definitely more noticable on the drivers side, which is concerning.

Sandbaja (another from the pre-order crew), mentioned they found considerable leak-down in his mill; I wonder if this explains why a lot of us arent' getting the gas mileage that was expected (and advertised)...

Exactly what I was wondering. 9/2011 build here, averaging 14-15 mpg over 1400 miles mixed driving with auto. My ticking is audible, but not as pronounced as others who have uploaded videos.

Mine is dated 8/11. I got a nasty rough engine about a month ago followed by a CEL that didn't register and my engine smells like a diesel from time to time. It runs great though and I average easily 20mpg on my commute. I haven't noticed any ticking but it does make some nasty diesel smells from time to time for some reason...

Wait, does this smell happen when the windows are up and the day after you washed down aunt Melba's meatloaf with onions with a six-pack of Schlitz? Just trying to isolate the cause.

I checked my build date. 12/12. It makes some normal valvetrain noise upon cold startup, but then goes away. It's quite as can be otherwise. Sometimes at idle I can't even tell it is running.

I dropped mine off today and the service rep finally gave me a call back to say that the engine guys said it sounds like lifters. He said they did an oil change to see if that was the problem and it wasnt. (I already did an oil change at around 1500-2000 miles-its currently at 3500 miles)

So service rep said they will more than likely have to at the least replace the lifters on drivers side but they have to call in and report the problem to chrysler (apparently chrysler is watching the pentastar problems closely)

So maybe tomorrow I will have updated information on mine on if they will do just the lifters or the whole head assembly. Or if they tear it down and find a bunch of other stuff.

Again, build date of 10/11 and 3500 miles (for those keeping the stats)

otnewt I'm in the same boat. Chrysler is sitting on their hands right now and the service section won't replace anything until Chrysler says so. The service department opened a star case and I opened my own through customer service. The oil change did nothing on mine either. So I call, get the run around and call again. My Jeep even failed some leakage test and still they won't fix it without Mom's permission.

A leakdown test?

If so, how the hell can they not fix a brand-new vehicle that fails a leakdown test!!!!

Cylinder leak-down test. (sort of a static compression test.) You're getting a new cylinder head, I'd wager....

Do you remember if it was the #2 cylinder?

UHB yes it was the #2 cylinder. The service department called Chrysler for what to do next and Chrysler told them to change the oil for now then hold squat until they figure it out. They had my Jeep for two days to do just that. I guess I should have kept my mouth shut on the "it's happening to a bunch of Jeeps built from Jul-Nov 11." So now I'm in a holding pattern waiting on my case manager to call me back. I'm about ready to post my case manager's number so everyone can call and complain to the same person.

That's why I'm not taking mine in yet. I think they're still trying to figure out the solution.

Good Luck!

Hey I say shout it from the mountaintop. The more exposure this gets, the more pressure on Chrysler and the more likelihood of a good resolution for anyone who is affected. I say post your little heart out, write something up on Epinions, Edmunds, Yahoo Autos, letters to magazines, whatever. Ultimately Chrysler is going to be most concerned with public perception on this deal and if it starts to unravel on them they may be smart enough to act preemptively and get this right.

You need a total head replacement. Chrysler knows it - heck I know it and I'm an idiot..... No idea why they are stalling, except maybe to try to get through the shortage of replacement heads before the SHTF.
