Because of the uncertainty as to production dates for the affected parts, I went with a 2013.

The service guy told me, "You have done your homework". He mentioned that they have replace several bad heads, and com fired what everyone is saying... the heads are in backorder...
They did the software update, I told him that I would be going back...
I was referring to our resident members of the board, not commenting about this issue. I hope things work out for you. I read here that Jeep dealers were instructed to hold off on installing the update version of the head because there were issues with the cam journals [I think], and the possibility of the cam binding. You might want to ask them about that. I think they had to call Jeep Corporate after they got the green light to replace the head to be sure they could use the new head? I'm going off memory, it was mentioned in one of these threads though.

Good on you for doing your homework. I bet you saved yourself a ton of grief, over the average clueless customer with a ticking head.

As a side note, the poster who put up pictures of the opened up engine all I can say is wow. I hope they don't leave it uncovered like that for long while they wait on parts etc.

If you read further back, you'll see there is no way of knowing if the problem was solved for 2013. Even if your build date is June, July or August. You will all have to wait and see like the rest of us 2012 folk. Good luck and enjoy for now!

Sorry to hear (read?) that. Over 13,000 miles. I need to drive mine more. I have owned mine for 3 months with only 1100 miles on it. I have a company provided vehicle as a daily driver. At this rate, it will be out of warranty before I get that code.

Now you can experience the dealership denial, then flash, then compression test and finally the backorder wait. Let us know if the dealership procedures have changed.

I thought I noticed a tick around 4,000 miles and brought it in. I was told it was "injector noise and it was normally a loud engine". I knew that was obviously nonsense. However, as time and miles went on, I noticed the tick less and less. I think I got used to it. I also have a loud Jeep. I have an aftermarket cat back exhaust and 4:10 gears as well so I didn't notice any power loss. I will say that if I pulled up to a car or wall on my driver's side, I could definitely hear it clearly. I'm ready for whatever I'm in store for now. I'll be making sure this is done right the first time

It wasn't extremely loud at all. There was a distinct tick, but nothing that would really worry you.

The date is found at the front of the engine just above the oil pan written on the block upside down.

My date is 2012 01 27

Thank u, Tomster. Although I've drove it a great deal since I bought it in September of 2011, I baby it big time. That might have contributed to my long wait on "Ticking Head Death Row". lol

That's one of the reasons I skipped 2012 and ordered a 2013, but there's still no way to be sure. You do have a 5 year power train warranty though, and if you are more of a worrier (as I tend to be), a lifetime power train warranty is available for less than $1000. Worth it for the peace of mind in my opinion.

Got CEL but no codes on 8/1, dealer pulled P0300 & P0304. Flashed the comp.

Got CEL again on 8/5, this time I could see code P0304. It's at the dealer now.

Out of curiosity, are the part numbers visible on the heads (without tearing a lot of stuff apart)? It could allay some people's fears if the could see that they have a new part numbered head.

Sad, but very true I think. This is not the small problem they'd like us to think it is. It will be a while before the 2013's log some miles. It will be very interesting to see if they fixed it, or if the early 2013's got late built, or left over 2012 engines, and share a similar fate.

Heard from dealer - cylinder head replacement. They've got one in stock. Should have it done tomorrow or Saturday.

OK...I'm getting nervous now.

Was it the casting....or is it a design flaw?

Not to worried, it's under warranty and Chrysler is fixing them, slowly but they are fixing them. As far as warranty if the problem happens a second or more times after warranty expires, they may bitch, but they will fix it as a warranty item, otherwise they would have a massive class action law suite.

ahhh! every day someone else!

:: exhales ::

i to think i have prolonged the issue with mobile 1 every 3k & lucas fuel lube treatments every 1k. ..well, the lucas treatments have been stopped.. and, wouldn't you know... the engine has progressively gotten worse.

i wish we knew if it was casting/design flaw.. but lips are sealed. my fears are having the heads replaced only to revisit the issue down the road.. why have the "repair" done to begin with??

Every day it seems we have new reports of the head problem. As far back as mid June I was convinced that this thing was going to be huge and I bailed out and traded-in my 2012 JK. With each passing day it looks more and more like I did the right thing.

I'm still a Jeeper at heart and will always be one even though I am currently Jeepless. I feel so bad for all of you who still have your Jeeps and are facing this issue.

I made a mistake by getting a Jeep for a daily driver at my ripe old age of 63. I found that I was less tolerant of some of the shortcomings of a Jeep as a daily driver than I was when I was younger. The lack of room for passengers and cargo and the lack of security with a soft top turned out to be bigger problems for me than I expected them to be. I should have kept my 2001 Sport that I had fixed up for off-roading and used only as a toy.

Those doggone 2012 JKs are super nice Jeeps. The ride, handling, power, and gas mileage of my 2012 JK were all in a different league compared to those same qualities of my 2001 Sport. The interior was way nicer in the JK. Everything was better about the JK.

It's such a shame that there has to be this stupid head problem spoiling what should be the pleasure of owning the best Jeep ever built.

I wish everyone well but if I still had my Jeep I would have to wonder if one head replacement would be the end of the problem or if it would have to be done again and again over time. Are the heads with the new design really the fix? Only time will tell. Will those whose replacement heads are of the original design have to have the new head replaced down the road?

Why are we hearing absolutely NOTHING from Chrysler?

Tomster

Too bad to hear all this news and no word from Chrysler.I traded my 06 because of the opda failures and upgraded to an 11 jku. This jeep was bought back by Chrysler and end up with a 12.I love this jeep, power, handling, interior and oh yea power. This is a perfect power plant for these vehicles.I've got 7000 miles in 3+ months.Just wish they would own up to this issue?come on chrysler ,the uncertainty sucks.

Over in another thread, sharkey969 has verified that his brand spanking new 2013 Wrangler's manual calls for 5W20 oil! He verified that the oil fill cap says 5W20:

Could this be a change to better lube the valve guides and protect from the failure that leads to the "tick".

Should we be changing to the lighter grade?

Update on my recent post regarding my cylinder head issue finally causing my dash to light up
I brought it to a Dodge/Jeep dealer that I heard had a great service dept....and unlike the dealer that I bought my Jeep from, these people are great!

Note to all 2012 Wrangler owners!!! It's definitely not just us! I walked in and explained how I had ticking start around 4-6k miles and brought it to the dealer I had bought it at, and was told it was normal injector noise by their service dept. I then said my dash just lit up. I ran the code on a quickscan tool and it came up P0300 multiple misfire detected. I started to tell her I was pretty sure what it was, and before I could say anything, she replied "the cylinder head issue?"....I said that's the one! She then stated that they have recently done a Wrangler as well as TWO Durangos!!! That definitely surprised me. She told me to bring it in first thing Monday when the engine specialist is in. She said he'll confirm that's the problem, check availability on the head, and then set me up with a rental if need be after they inform Chrysler directly. Interesting that they have to inform Chrysler directly
I'll definitely keep this thread updated with how this all goes. BTW. I was given the option of leaving it today to be in the safe side, but she said that going by their past cases, it should be ok through the weekend. She can't clear a rental until it is diagnosed by the specialist on Monday and then they notify Chrysler. I don't care how they do it, just fix it and get me in a rental ASAP! Lol. In the opposite words of Han Solo, I have a good feeling about this....this service dept. that is
