One more thing. She said one of the Durango owners had a rental for a month before the head came in and was installed. She said that was the longest wait for a fix on the three they have done. I'm just glad they A) knew the issue immediately B) have dealt with it a few times, and C) didn't try to screw me around and lie or come up with lame excuses like the Blue Man Group was under my hood performing a show and making ticking noises.

I brought it to a Dodge/Jeep dealer that I heard had a great service dept....and unlike the dealer that I bought my Jeep from, these people are great!

Note to all 2012 Wrangler owners!!! It's definitely not just us! I walked in and explained how I had ticking start around 4-6k miles and brought it to the dealer I had bought it at, and was told it was normal injector noise by their service dept. I then said my dash just lit up. I ran the code on a quickscan tool and it came up P0300 multiple misfire detected. I started to tell her I was pretty sure what it was, and before I could say anything, she replied "the cylinder head issue?"....I said that's the one! She then stated that they have recently done a Wrangler as well as TWO Durangos!!! That definitely surprised me. She told me to bring it in first thing Monday when the engine specialist is in. She said he'll confirm that's the problem, check availability on the head, and then set me up with a rental if need be after they inform Chrysler directly. Interesting that they have to inform Chrysler directly
I'll definitely keep this thread updated with how this all goes. BTW. I was given the option of leaving it today to be in the safe side, but she said that going by their past cases, it should be ok through the weekend. She can't clear a rental until it is diagnosed by the specialist on Monday and then they notify Chrysler. I don't care how they do it, just fix it and get me in a rental ASAP! Lol. In the opposite words of Han Solo, I have a good feeling about this....this service dept. that is
Do you have an extended warranty? I don't and they said they couldn't offer me a rental because of that.

I don't. They told me I couldn't get one until it's diagnosed because I didn't, however once it's diagnosed, they can get me one because of the magnitude of the issue and the fact that my Jeep will be there either days or weeks depending on head availability.

Huh... Guess the dealer has a different policy or something... And it is confirmed and they are working on I today.

Least my old XJ (255,000+ miles) fired up to be a back up.

Call Chrysler Customer Care (1-800-IAMJEEP), open a case and ask for a loaner. They will make sure you get one.

There's a manufacturers sticker on the driver side door I believe. Look for MDH (month day hour).

It's definitely wide spread issue. A service rep at dealer other than mine told me he's booked 2 grand Cherokees, 1 Grand Caravan, and 1 Wrangler for head replacements in 2 weeks. And that's just him. Other reps have booked some too.

This problem is huge. Chrysler is avoiding a recall because it would literally impact every vehicle in their lineup. The losses would be tremendous.

Now the question is, who is the supplier for the materials used to manufacture the new parts? They might need to be in my stock portfolio

You nailed it, and they are making sure their employees, reps, and sales staff are not talking about it on these boards.

Thats good to hear Braveheart, where did you take it into, I know you said you were having issues with the one in Norwood.
I bought mine last month, and I asked the serv manager point blank about the cyl head issue, He was straight forward and said they have seen a few, and not just in wranglers, and he also said the the wranglers are the only ones that need to go through a couple steps before they change the head.
But that seems to have been pointed out already. But that was also a month ago too, so maybe they are doing away with the re flash, lifter replace, leakdown bs and getting straight to the point.
He also said that it was a hit of miss thing, that not every 3.6 is having this issue.

But where mine is still new in the box, only 1700 miles, but a build date of 10/11, I am reading, learning and watching. Hopefully by the time mine gets to that point, chrysler will have this issue resolved.

Meanwhile, best of luck to you and everyone else going through this.

I picked up a couple oil filters from the Parts Dept. at the dealer. While I was checking out, he mentioned that a Jeep came through their service department with a multiple misfire code. He said that they were ready to send it back to Chrysler, and then did an oil analysis which showed it had been using 5w20. Then he insisted that I use 5w30, as the OM specifies.

I realize that there must be more to it, based on the fact that Chrysler revised the head design, but I wouldn't be surprised if they filled up a bunch of cars from the factory with 5w20 because that's what they are specifying now for a lot of the older V6s. Apologies if this question has been asked before, but for those of you who have had a CEL, what was your first oil change interval?

The 2013 now calls for 5W20 oil. Other than the fix for the bad head what changed about that engine?

I would but got the jeep back today. 30% compression lost on #4 cylinder. Left head replaced. Even got an oil change done and it was coming due.

It's much quieter. Hopefully the milage goes up too.

I had bad experiences at the Norwood place's service dept. back in the day with my 03 Wrangler. My new one was bought in Woburn and the service rep was pretty decent, it was the techs themselves that did lousy work. Damaged some materials inside two different times and left it a mess after oil changes.
I just took it to a place in Weymouth that I was referred to and they were great!

Well I can tell you mum is the word from dealerships. I went in for my tick and explained my situation the dealer service manager said to me he hasn't replaced one head yet. I can tell he was lying. Then I asked if it was the head would I get a vehicle while its being repaired he told me no. Southland Dodge Houma Louisiana.

That's funny. I had some time to kill this morning and went to a local Jeep dealer. Their shop works half a day on Saturdays, which is a good thing, and made this trip worth while. Anyway I asked about a 2012 Wrangler, they had new in their inventory, and I looked it over. I asked the salesman if he was aware of the Pentastar tick requiring replacing the head. He said no, then mentioned the engine was named one of the best by Wards. I knew he was lying about the tick by his facial expressions. I asked if I could check with the shop, which I did, and they claimed to have no reports of problems either. The real funny thing was there was a guy outside for a smoke with the tick and CEL pointing to a head replacement. I told him after they finished stroking him with the CEL reset, to visit this site so he'd have ammo for when he goes back with the CEL lite up a second time. Needless to say I won't do business with liars when I'm ready to order.

Many dealerships will not tell you. Why? Well, you may either wait to buy or go buy something else...a 4Runner or FJ Cruiser, or maybe a used Wrangler. Dealerships are not known for transparency and honesty. Money is their God...period.

Yep, no one is in it for their health, or out of the kindness or their hearts. Some just lie more, or better than others.

Then I guess you won't be getting a new Jeep, or any other branded vehicle, for that matter.

Good luck finding yourself an honest dealership. If you happen to come across one in your search for truth, honesty, and integrity, lemme know.

I've bought new before I'll buy new again. There are no honest dealers, knowing that is what makes it easy. I just look for one that is a little less dishonest than others.

Haven't heard of the ticking problem until today however last year about 2 months after I got my 2012 (maybe 1,800 miles on it) I did a road trip, 1000 miles to so cal and while I was there the thing died on me, just no power, sputtering - really not working right. Took it to the dealer there and they reflashed the computer; said if it did it again they would just replace the computer...now close to 11,000 miles on it and no problems.

The ticking thing I know it doesn't have cause I'm one of those that's really paranoid about sounds my vehicles make...hoping though this problem won't develop over time?

So is this head issue going to kill the resale value of our jeeps?
