None at all. It was a decently audible ticking sound from the driver's side head, but it felt smooth and strong. I averaged around 17-18 mpg's and that was with 4:10 gears so that seemed ok too.

With some sadness, I ended up trading my '12 JKU in on a VW Passat TDI yesterday.

I really liked the JKU, just not the apprehension about how long the head was going to last. My head was replaced at 15K and really had no signs that it was going to implode again, but I didn't want to take the chance.

The bigger reason for the trade, however, is that the JKU just didn't make a ton of sense for me as a daily driver. I put 28K miles on it in a year and my fuel bill was about $5,000. I should save about $2,500/year in the diesel.

Of course, I give up the sheer fun and capability of the JKU, which I'll miss. I'll probably get back in a cheaper Wrangler later. Once summer rolls back around next year, I'm sure I'll want to drive on the beach again.

I didn't do too bad on the trade. I bought the JKU for $32K and change and got $29K on the trade-in. Paid invoice for the VW.

I sincerely wish everyone here the best with their rides and I hope Chrysler gets past this issue. Regardless of your political stance, I hate to see a big American company make a mistake like this. I hope they make the right decisions, do right by the loyal customers, and save a black eye for everyone.

Good luck everyone.

Understandable bluehen; in the end, it's all about our comfort level and what we are, and aren't, willing to be "ok" with.

I'm trading my 2-door for a 2013 JKU, and the main reason I chose a '13 instead of another '12 was due to this potential problem. My 2-door has been ticking since 3K (has 7600'ish now) and will throw a code someday. I just hope the stealership fixes the problem before they sell it to an unsuspecting Jeeper who isn't aware of the issue.

Good luck, and maybe we'll see you back on the boards with a new Jeep someday.

Congrast, bluehen. If you're not offroading, it makes little sense to have a Wrangler or comparable vehicle...not to me anyway. I'm sure you will miss it a bit though. That VW TDI looks good, and the gas mileage on the highway is impressive.

Have there been any Canadian Jeep owners run into this head problem? I have a April 2012 build date. Just over 4000km. Picked it up the end of May.

Yeah....28K a year is a LOT of miles for a brick on wheels. It takes me about 4 years to put 28k miles on a vehicle.

I have not been riding with the plastic engine cover for a while now IMO I look at it like a dress up kit for the engine

I have an April 18 build date with 6000 km and no tick. You should have an engine build date on the engine block below the crank and above the oil pan at the front.

So, I have an engine build date of 17 April 2011, and a Wrangler build date of 20 July 2011, making it a bit more than 3 months from engine assembly to Jeep assembly.

Cool to know, may 6 2011 with an august 11, build
I heard mention of hood insulation, is there actually a piece on the underside of the hood, I notice slots where it would install, but no material

I've been reading and following this thread since it started. I have a 12 JKU with a March 2012 build date. I have just over 3,000 miles on it. I have had a noticeable tick coming from the driver side since I turned 500 miles. No CEL yet. My gas mileage is horrible. I calculate it myself and I'm getting 13.5 mpg in the city and 15.2 on the highway. I'm anal with my vehicles, but I'm not going to freak out about this. When it's time, Chrysler will fix it. Until then I will enjoy it. It also helps that my cousin is part owner in the dealership I bought it from. It's a bit of a road trip to his dealership, but it's worth the peace of mind that my Jeep will be handled with TLC.

So then they have about a 3 month supply of engines, which is about what I was thinking, perhaps a little more. That means there could be some early 2013 Wranglers with engines built before the head update. I hope not, but at this point it wouldn't surprise me one bit. I hope I'm wrong, any 2013 owners have engine build dates to hopefully prove me wrong and clear this up?

Did anyone ever determine if that was an engine build date or a block casting date? Three months seems like an awful lot of inventory to carry. Is the part number on the head visible?

the issue will certainly transcend north American boundaries. although the issue seems more common than comfortable, i wouldn't go trading it in..

as a follow up to my previous post;

PCM was re-flashed on the 13th.. pinging and knocking still present. let tank run dry, filled up with Exxon 93.. pinging/knocking gone, since. it's 5$ more a tank.. but. i can't take the knock any longer. if that's what she wants, that's what she gets

just checked my "engine build date". It reads 03/02/12. so roughly 1.5 months before my actual 4/23/12 build date.

ticking from 1k miles. I just took a 4000 mile roadtrip in 100+ temperatures and the ticking has noticeably increased in volume, but no CEL. my idle is also a bit more rough.

having said that, my mileage is still 20+ and power is fine

2012 Jeep JKU Altitude Edition

My 2012 Jeep Wrangler Altitude Edition has an engine build date of 04/26/2012 and a manufacture date of June 2012. It also has insulation under the hood. It only has 450 miles on it but no ticking so far. In fact it is extremely quite. It is hard to tell it is running when it is idling. The gas mileage hasn't been very good though. According to the display it is averaging 13.5 miles in the city. Below are some pictures.

Engine cover and insulation, Hmmm My Sport didn't have insulation just the cover. Anyone know what's up with that? Trim level maybe?

Possibly to keep the engine heat from causing the hood decal to delaminate?

Must be part of the Altitude package. I believe the insulation is the reason it is so quite too. If it is idling without the air conditioner on you can barely tell it is running. I sure hope it doesn't develope a tick because it is great right now...except for the poor gas mileage.

Same here, I am leaning toward trim level, sport s as well and no insulation

I also have ~500 miles on mine with a May build (engine build is from April) and getting 14.5MPG. From what I understand, mileage will get better over time and with added miles and once breakin is completed.

PS have heard...

Chrysler engines are broke in at the factory before ever being set in the chassis.

0-500 miles: the computer is set to an almost limp mode to allow for proper break in of other drivetrain components, trans, axles, driveshaft, wheel bearing, transfer case, etc.

500-5000 miles: the computer is now awakened fully to allow learning of driving habits, but VVT function is limited to allow proper lubrication of VVT components.

5000+ miles: VVT function is fully active and you should now see your best performance/gas mileage.

I've been asked to turn mine off at drive-thru's so they could hear me. I have no CEL yet, so the dealers won't touch it. Mine sounds as if the exhaust is leaking badly from both sides. It's an embarrasment, I'm actually becoming ashamed of my Jeep.

Build date 3-12

Okay I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler 2-Door Sport with the 3.6L which I thought I loved. Can hear a fainit ticking noise on the drivers side head with 1500 miles. Heard it loud ONCE at start up at around 400 miles but it is somewhat faint now. Anyone else have a 3-12 build date? Ticking or no ticking? Seems to run great. Time will tell.
