The only problem there is they (Jeep) can delete any comment they wish on their Facebook page. Just as you or I can with our pages.

mine certainly isn't that loud.. but i too hear an exhaust leak sound... not open pipe loud, and more from 0mph-10mph than anything.. but in tunnels or beside walls all the time. two dealships and they say it's normal.. i guess i get used to it eventually

I too have the strange sound with my 2012 JKU Sahara. My wife has a 2011 T&C with the Pentastar and it has a nice throaty exhaust note. The dealer said the sound is normal for Wranglers. Maybe a Gibson dual exhaust will drown it out? I notice it most when climbing the hill to our house at moderate throttle at around 20mph. Prefer the T&C sound and think it fits the Wrangler better than a minivan!

2900 miles, in town fuel miliage has dropped from 15.7(which was never great) to 15 and this tank will probably be in the 13 mpg range . No tick to speak of, and no CEL. Maybe somewhat rough idle but there are times when driving there is almost no throttle responce without getting aggressive with the pedal.

JKdozer- I'm in the same boat. some tick, but not crazy - but crapppppppy mileage - band before people tell me I'm workin the skinny pedal too hard, I assure you I drive like a granny - I assumed it was just b/c the AC was running a bunch - because I went from about 18 down to 15.7.... boo.

I have 2012 Sahara Unlimited and it has both the insulation and cover. 2500 Miles and ok so far! Getting oil change (free) from dealer Friday. Taking a 4 hr trip Again on Saturday. Will report back on mileage.

Just keeping u all posted. Got a call from the dealer last night. My driver's side head has been replaced and it's ready to be picked up. As long as they treated her right and did a good job, it was a great experience at this dealer! Dropped it off Monday, got a free loaner...and it is ready exactly when they said it would be, Thursday.
I'll post after I pick her up later this morning and let people know if she was kept clean and injury free while she was there, and if it sounds/runs different.

I was wondering if the hood insulation could have anything to do with the bad mileage. When the hood is closed the air intake is partially covered by the insulation. You can see what I am referring to in the pictures below. Shouldn't the airflow into this intake not be restricted?

I am really sorry to hear that. Considering how quite mine is I would think that yours has to have some kind of major problem. Good luck with it.

I think so also. It will get fixed eventually under waranty. I may take my SPL meter (sound pressure level) to the dealership and prove how much louder mine is. That way there can be no subjective "it sounds the same to me" crap that I've been told twice now.

I remember reading a while back that someone trimmed the insulation in that area, which resulted in improved in MPGs.

Picked her up an hour ago. No more ticking at idle!!! I'm going to keep an eye on the MPG's and see if they go up, stay the same or go down. lol
I was impressed. I popped the good open before I even walked in to the service dept. It looked good under the hood. I then checked the Jeep out for casualties: destroyed driver's side flare, paint damage near grille/hood and a few other areas. She came back just the way she left
I'm now going to attach two photos of the write up of what was going on and what they did

Yay, tick-free! So glad you got it back quickly and in one piece, and that your experience, overall, wasn't too painful.

Thank u very much!!! I kept a very optimistic approach to the whole thing, cause that's pretty much how I live. I'm literally one if the happiest, optimistic dudes alive. Always have been. I like to get crazy and go Jeepin' around too. Lol. I hope everyone tries not to worry about this issue. Drive, enjoy, live....and when it happens, get it fixed for free and repeat the previous: drive, enjoy and live!

I'm very happy this worked out for you. I'm waiting for mine to blow too. I have around 6300 miles on my Dec 2011 built JK, but no ticking. I have the attitude that you have...if and when it happens it will be fixed FREE of charge. I'm not worried at all. Congrats. Good to hear a happy ending.

Good to hear braveheart, I think as quet as chrysler is being, they seem to have a good handle on this. I am thinking this will pass, and we will all be able to relax and enjoy.

Hey guys, stopped at my local dealer today to pick up a filter for my 2012 JKUR. I know the service manager there... I asked him about the head issue, he said that dealer has done 10 drivers side head replacements so far... 2 grand Cherokee's, 3 wrangler and 5 town and country's... He claims not all 3.6's are affected. I asked him about this " NEW " more robust head... He said he has not installed any heads with a new part #.... And said he had thought there was a specific mill machine that had been repeating a mistake in the valve guide in cyl #2... And it's just a random occurrence some will fail while others won't. So basically how I took it... Whoever got the engine with that head will have an issue.. Others maybe not! He also said expect to see another change in oil recommendation... He claims the 5w-30 specified for 2012's... Now 5-20w for 2013's will all end up going to a 0w oil. So maybe this is a heat issue.. Not sure.. Just figured I'd share my info.

Good info. A 0W oil is not going to help with heat, all it will help with is cold starting. I'd be interested in seeing if the 2012's get back spec'd to 5W20 from 5W30.

That would explain the mpg drop before the CEL.

WOW, thanks Braveheart! Finally, an explanation in print. Braveheart's service docs clearly depict what's happening.... Steel valve slamming a softer aluminum head, and causing the round valve seat to elongate (oblong). What the cause is, is still unknown though It would seem the valve train geometery is off...so not hitting the piston, just ruining the seal to the head causing cylinder leakage. Pentastars.com says, "The intake valve is a single-piece design, made of forged heat resistant (martensitic) steel". Never thought I'd hope for a CEL, but here I am eagerly awaiting one...kinda sad.

So the rumor I heard a few months ago was correct, valve seats. And if they elongate, they will eventually remove themselves from their press fit in the head and not let the valve close completely, resulting in the piston jamming the valve into the seat, damaging the piston, valve and head. I would suggest if your engine light comes on, and it starts running rough, take it in to the dealer ASAP. Replacing a complete head is one thing, tearing down the lower end to replace a piston, and possibly having cylinder wall damage, is another.

Thank u to everyone! It's been running great all day, no more ticking and I reset and am now going to watch how the gas mileage is

I hope everyone else with this issue has as good an experience with the process.

Braveheart, your cylinder leakage tests were very similar to mine, which I posted somewhere way earlier in this thread when they replaced my head. Your cyl 2 and 6 were leaking 75%/80%. Mine were 60%/80%.

I wish I had posted my paperwork. All remarkably similar to yours, and that was six months ago. Chrysler has this diagnosis down to a science now.

I'm happy for you, Braveheart. Like you said, I hope it turns out well for all concerned. That doggone 2012 JK is one sweet Jeep and once that head problem is taken care of and there is no longer a dark cloud hanging over the owner's head, he or she is going to enjoy driving the best Jeep ever built.

Keep us posting as you accumulate some miles.
