loaner was approved by chrysler for me, no reason why they shouldn't for anyone else. they took 3 days to diagnose and fix mine. however, when you exclude parts delay, they did the head job within 4 hours for me.

I'm taking mine in tomorrow, 1400 miles, power loss, loud ticking, small reduce in MPG. Should I leave the JK there the whole time and push for a rental the whole time? Who has the authority for a rental? Do I call Chrysler for a rental while my jeep is at the dealership?

you won't get a rental until the head problem is confirmed. when you drop it off for it to be checked, ask the service manager if he can arrange for a rental if the head needs to be replaced. the service manager can't approve a rental by himself (unless the dealer pays), so her will contact chrysler and have the warranty pay for the rental.

in my case, enterprise called me up before the dealer confirmed my head needed replacing. if for some reason they decline a rental, then call up chrysler customer care. they'll take a care of you.

I believe this was stated prior so I'm just bubbling it back to the surface.

P0300- It sounds like the protocol remains the same if you have a misfire code. There is a newer flash for the PCM from the one I received back in February so mine was reflashed.
Old PCM flash-68090877AD
New PCM flash- 68090877AG

Old TSB 18-054-11
New TSB 18-007-12

I will see if the issue returns...

Mine started ticking around 500 miles. I now have 5700 miles. I took it in Sept. 4th. I called today was told all parts are in and they should have it back together in couple of days. I have missed my Jeep. I read some posters/owners that have said there not concerned about a "little ticking noise". First, when parts are making noises because they are out of tolerance or not wearing correctly they tend to wear out other parts the longer you wait. Secondly, some say they have a 100,000 mile warranty. Just remember that Chrysler is on their third life. They almost folded up the tents twice already, they may not be in business when yours breaks down completely or may change their warranty process.Times are tough and getting much tougher.I hope this is the only major issue we have with our 2012 wranglers. I have always wanted a Wrangler, but have been warey of the reliability. I have to say that other than this head/ticking issue I have been very happy with the reliability and build quality so far, and your talking to a person who has owned Honda,Acura,Toyota and Subaru for the last 22 years.

You guys have me concerned now. I heard some light ticking earlier on my 2013.... I didn't think much of it and quite frankly I've never sat around listening to various engines...

It's not as bad as the video on the first few pages but it's definitely there.... grr..

Anyone else with a 13 hearing random ticks?

take a video and we can tell you. i wouldn't worry, these motors are noisy. mine had the head replaced and it is still noisy and could be interpreted as ticking, but is definitely not the same noise as the ticking problem i had earlier.

Reading this thread is like looking up medical conditions on the internet. Half way through you are going to be convinced you have the problem.

You probably don't. But, as blastek said, take a video of the sound and put it up.

I really think they should rethink the filter location, or devise a better anti-drain back system. I realize several engines from other car mfg's have filters in a similar location, however I don't think its working well for Chrysler. While it might not be a cause of the bad head problem, it sure is noisy in engines that have sat for a few days. JMO

This is with an automatic though, and it almost seems to me as though it is an issue with the auto trying to decide if/when it will shift. Hopefully it is not a sign of other issues. I have not had any ticking yet, but only have 5K miles too.
Mine seems more like motor than transmission, I also have the automatic. This varying tone happens in the middle of a gears normal range not near shift points. Kind of weird but man do I love this Jeep.

I'm officially going to take title as the first to get a head replaced twice. The P0300 code is back and the dealer has ordered a new head for me.

So funny. I pulled a muscle in my back once and after reading a few pages of medical forums I was convinced I needed like 6 new vertebrae, 3 new ribs and 6 months of convalescence. As it turned out, I needed ... Advil.

post-head replacement vid. the drivers side is awesome. just injector noise. passenger side...dunno. i wouldn't be too surprised if that gets replaced eventually. i can definitely hear a baby tick. hasn't grown up yet if it stays like that, i'm happy. my idle is still a bit bumpy, but it definitely runs and sounds 10X better.

I look at it this way...after this I'm done having to think about "will it happen and if so when" mentality. For that I'm in a happy place. Sunny side up please!

since you've had 2 now, i think you're in a decent position to push for lifetime warranty on the engine. i'd push hard for that

not a bad idea and it can't hurt to ask. I think oilwell said something about potential engine risk a while back...I'll need to look it up.

After listening to a couple others, mine sounds fairly normal I guess... but I figured I'd post a video anyways just for your feedback.

I don't yet know how to embed here... sorry.

Mine sounds like that as well. I think of not as injector noise. When you close the hood do you hear it just a little as you approach the car? And when inside hear nothing?

sounds pretty normal to me. pretty similar to mine right now. when mine was at its worst you could hear it in the cabin with the windows up at all speeds. best bet is to keep an eye on it and get it documented at the dealer when you think it is getting louder

Baja, are you saying that you are having the replacement head replaced or is this the other head (passenger side)?

If this is the second replacement on the driver side, do you think you got the original design on the first replacement head? Lord, I hope the new design heads are not failing.

So Baja, just for kicks, give the service manager a detailed (and I mean detailed, like an hour long) description of how you drive and where you buy gas and see if he has any ideas on what you are doing to make these heads fail. Remember Chrysler said it was our gas and driving habits that cause these heads to fail. Then make some videos and send them to Chrysler asking them the same question. I think you’re entitled to an explanation kinda like that lady who had her misfire (CEL) light come on at 38 miles after leaving the dealers lot, I think we all need to demand a little better quality smoke be blown up our rear because this is not bad gas and driving habits like Chrysler keeps saying.

I had the first head replaced back in January long before a new head was released. The original head lasted 10k miles and set a P302 code (left Bank, drivers side). The second head lasted 12K miles with a P300 code ( my assumption is the left bank again but until it is finished I wont know). At this point I'm confident the redesigned head is going in and it will be the final fix.

The discussion is yet to be held. I'll let everyone know if I get anything new.
I will state I buy 99% of my gas at costco just because it is the least expensive out there and also get an additional 3% back (-12 cents at $4/gallon) off the pump price. This engine should run on any commercial gas out there.

Maybe it's a case of Engineers that don't use their own products like the early Arctic Cat engines. That when driven up a steep hill would lose oil pressure and done for... Oh these are driven off road?
