Nailed it. Chrysler reimburses the dealer for the cost of the rental.

I completely agree with one of the above posts! If you love it! Buy it! If it breaks they will fix it! I paid well over 40k for my Rubicon and am I a little sour that its at the dealer for a head replacement? You bet I am! But I still love it and do not regret buying it. I have over 6k in adds and when I get it back Im going to keep adding. For once Chrysler is making things right with a proper fix and a rental car. Only bad thing is I cant do and go the places I normally go with a Chrysler Seabring!

I assume this means I have the new head. I am monitoring the engine noise closely and tracking the mileage. Overall I am impressed with the power this jeep makes. From what I gather from friends at the dealer the 2013 models have the new head and most if not all the 2012 models are eligible to be replace if the customer requests it....

IIRC there is a case in this thread of a 2013 with the problem, possibly two. When I have time I have to re-read the thread.

Was the 2013 case confirmed or just hearsay?

I have to check when I have time. I recall reading about it on another site as well, but didn't bookmark it. The 2013's are still young, so if the problem still exists it won't be hearsay for long.

So I ordered my build sheet for my 2012 Sahara unlimited and it shows a build date of 30 May 12. So does this mean I should have the dealer check the heads or just listen for a tick.

i'll email my service manager tomorrow and ask what the purpose of it is and why it no longer is on my engine. that would narrow it down if they forgot it. i don't think i'll ask for another though, if he says they forgot.

I'd remove the foam, and let that heat out. But then again it might be worth waiting for Blastek's service manager's response to the email he's sending.

Bottom line is we're a bunch of Jeep loving enthusiasts trying to solve a problem, that Jeep might not have solved yet.

I wonder if his service manager will know? Will wait for Blastek's response and go from there.

No. We're talking about the big chunk of foam between the intake plenum and the driver's side valve cover.

That's the foam, but I doubt the service manager is going to know. It's still worth the wait though. I think heat is part of the problem, along with the exhaust manifold being integrated into the cylinder head. Odds are Chrysler won't admit to either one.

I would not remove the foam insulation. Even though we don't know why it's there, it is there for some reason. In today's quest for cost savings, Chrysler would not have spent the money for it to be there if it wasn't necessary.

You're probably right and why asking the service manager isn't a bad idea. But IIRC there was a recent head swap and the foam was removed, so finding out why might not be a bad idea. I bet its there for noise reduction, but my guess is as good as any other guess.

My service manager did not know what the foam block was and the tech is out 'till tuesday, so i won't know until then. maybe someone with a '13 can pop the hood and see if there's some foam there.

My 13 has the foam, maybe the foam is there to give a little support for the plastic intake manifold on that side.

I can look on my 13 if someone wants to really explain where I'm looking. A picture might help that I can compare to.

I figured he wouldn't know, most of the service mangers I worked with were good at basic BS'ing customers and up selling but that was about it. See what happens Tuesday. My bet is the foam is for sound deadening.

True. I bought my Jeep from SC and I live in GA. The Savannah dealership said a rental was covered due to this issue as well as others in which they need to keep it for more than a day. If the Jeep's warranty ran out, that would be different. They gave me a rental for 3 days. I just had to pay for fuel.

My '13 has the foam (pic attached). Now that I see what's above it, I will venture a guess as to the purpose. The intake plenum is right above it. The foam is probably to insulate the plenum from the heat of the combined head/exhaust manifold. Keeping the intake air cooler aids performance and fuel economy since air density decreases with temperature.
