Upgrade 2012 or Trade for a 2013 Rubicon

Last year when I moved back from Japan, I had every intention of picking up an Unlimited Rubicon. When I got back, the production line had been shut down for the 12's and they were gearing up for the 13 production. Basically whatever you found on the dealer's lot was all that was available. I literally could not find a Rubi anywhere except for the MW edition or colors that I just did not care for.

I ended up settling for a 2012 Altitude edition (sahara). Now I love a lot of the features that came with the altitude, but it was missing all of the things that I was looking for in a Rubicon like front and rear Dana 44's, the 4-1 transfer case, 4:10 gearing, electronic swaybar disconnects, and lockers.

I have priced how much all that would cost to add to my Altitude and I would be looking at around 7-8K with me doing all the work (no labor cost).

On the other hand, I could trade in my Altitude and they would give me 28000 for it. I told them I would take all of my add-ons off and put it back to stock before I traded it in. They have a 2013 Commando Green Unlimited Rubi that they will bring down to 34000. I think I can get them lower for the options that are on it, but I havent tried too hard yet.

If I did it that way, I can take all of my add-ons that I already put on my Altitude and transfer them over to the Rubi, so the new Rubi would be set-up just like I have my altitude now.

The new Rubi would not have all the features that I have on my Altitude such as leather, remote start, blacked out interior etc, but it would have all the mechanical features that I wanted in the first place.

So to wrap this up, what do you all think? Trade or upgrade?

If you want those features more than the current comfort features you have, go for it. Seems like not too big of a hit, as long as you owe less than $28,000 for your current Jeep.

I only owe 7K on the Altitude. It is a toss up because I really like the comfort features that I have on mine, but I like all the things that make a Rubi a Rubi.

You can take that same amount of money and make a just as capable rig as a rubi. I would just upgrade what you have. Thats my opinion though. Part of it is paying for the Rubicon name and stickers.

I would get the Rubi, but that's just me. It depends a lot on what you're planning to do. If a stock Rubi will handle all that you'll throw at it and you don't have to undertake any serious mods, than go for. I tend to prefer factory components over a hodge-podge of aftermarket, unless the aftermarket system is designed by someone who really knows what they're doing. With factory you know that everything is designed to work well together. Just my .02.

I would run what you have now and wait for new production, which we should find out about in the next year or so. From there make your choice whether you want 2013 or new model. I'm seriously hoping the new model has different door handles...

Go for a 14 Rubicon with a visor-mirror that lights up for your wife. Dude, do not surrender. so you lose out on sex for a few weeks. Work out and get more buffed in those weeks and she will be really warm for your form..... And you will have a 14 Rubicon.....everyone win's!

Then after a few months and that $hit calms down we will talk about you getting your 4" EVO long arm lift with 37" tires. Hell yes, Balls To The Wall! No more sitting on the front porch, then you can run with the BIG DOG'S... I'm getting ready to run with them too

I love doing the work myself, but part of me likes the idea of having everything already done with a warranty.

If it will cost you $8k to upgrade your Sahara to Rubi specs but it's $6k to trade up to a 1 year newer vehicle with less depreciation, full manufacturers warranty, and everything you want I think you have to let the Math gods make this decision.

I had a 12 sport and was thinking about lifting it and 35's, then I would need to regear it, and while it's apart maybe put some lockers in it, and..... I traded it for a 13 rubicon and am very happy I did.

Maybe lots of places, but not anywhere without useing the winch. I often try to get as far along as I can before I start switching lockers on, and there are a lot of things you simply can't do without a front locker. There are lots of trails you can't run without a front locker.

That is unless you are comparing your moded jeep to a stock rubi. The OP probably going to upgrade eather jeep so it all comes down to the math of it all. Of course he has to decide if he wants to give up comfort or capabilities.

I have already put a 3.5 inch Metalcloak lift, 35's, front and rear bumpers, and winch. The dealer told me that he would give me 28000.00 for my Jeep put back to stock form. I kept all of my original equipment so I could put it back minus the fender flares which I trimmed . They brought the rubicon down from 39800 to 34000, so the difference would be 6000. They also said I could take the new jeep home and they would follow me with my old jeep so I could change everything over. I told them it would take about 2 days to switch everything back over, and they would be fine with that.

Might want to check how bad you're going to get burned on registration and sales tax... Another 3grand right there if you're talking CA.

Question, If you do not care for Rubicons which you do have a 100% right to......
Why do you have one in as your avatar? Especially my wife's Jeep as your avatar......but my wife says thanks for the compliment (kinda).

Keep the Altitude. They did not make very many and it will hold a bit more value down the road vs regular JKU . Mo money for you when you trade up to the US Hemi version. I love my Tude, but I dont wheel. Well I mean....I wheel it in parking lots and stuff. I drove through a puddle once too. Lmmfao

Its a special edition, I would keep the altitude and upgrade. Or could try your luck with the Rubi 10A.

When I bought the Altitude, I wasn't buying it because it was a limited edition. I honestly had never heard of it when I picked it up. Now that I have it, I love all the extra stuff that is in it that makes it an Altitude. The good thing with the Altitude was that all the extra items were not the off-road items and were more for comfort and looks, so I did not feel bad about replacing the bumpers, suspension and wheels and tires.

I know that all Jeeps are off-road worthy, but I wanted a Rubi for all the off-road components that come standard on it. But now when I am looking at them, I want the nice items that are upgrades such as leather, the blacked out interior and the heated seats but when I add those items, it pushes the price outside of my window.

This damn Altitude spoiled me as far as comfort goes. I would have been happy with a stripped down Rubi with no extra's at all before I got this one. Now I realize how much I like this stuff and it is making my decision difficult.
